    Overall specifications:

    The Switched Reluctance Machine (SRM) developed in the CIPED project offers a new set of benefits compared to existing motors. The special thing about the SRM is the lack of permanent magnets and the very simple design, where the “active” parts consist of steel laminations and copper windings on the stator. The result is a simple, cheap and rugged machine.

    The CIPED motor is based on a state-of-the-art liquid cooled U-core technology that significantly reduces iron core loss and torque ripple and allows for a simple and customizable construction depending on the use case – e.g. automotive, agriculture, energy and industrial applications.

    In connection with the CIPED motor, a unique power converter module has been developed that allows for an integrated solution where intelligent use of the SRM technology is explored to the fullest, including optimal control in any operating point, a minimum of idling losses and the possibility for regenerative braking. The motor and the converter are completely prepared for four-quadrant operation, allowing them to be used as a generator. Together, these components form a unique system that is tailored to systems working in an active environment.

    In the following figures, simulated maps of motor efficiency and losses are presented, along with a number of points where the measured values from loaded tests are given. A high efficiency is seen in a large part of the operating area. From 1000 rpm and 10 Nm there is a very large area with an efficiency above 90 %. Notice the high efficiency at idling, even at high speeds.
