INTRODUCTIONA number of companies in recent years haveproduced compact compressed air foam systems(CAFS) that are available on the General ServicesAdministration (GSA) Federal Supply Schedules. This report presents information that the FireManagement Program at San Dimas Technologyand Development Center has collected on compactCAFS units.
COMPACT COMPRESSED AIR FOAM SYSTEMSCompact CAFS units are produced in manyconfigurations with a wide range of performance.Auxiliary engines or power take-off’s (PTO) on firetrucks power some units; cylinders of compressedgas power others. Some units proportion foamconcentrate by premixing while others havedischarge side automatic regulating proportioners. Some units have an integral water supply and inother units the water must be supplied from anoutside source. The cost of these units varies widely. Some units are listed on GSA Federal SupplySchedules. Two units on FSA Federal SupplySchedules include the truck to carry the unit.
Another way of providing CAFS on a fire truck is toadd an air compressor and then use the fire truck’sexisting water tank, pump, and foam proportioner tocomplete the CAFS unit. This added air compressorcould be auxiliary engine powered or PTO powered. The auxiliary engine powered air compressor isgenerally quicker and requires less engineering toinstall. Also, with an auxiliary engine powered aircompressor, a CAFS running attack is more likelyto be possible than with a PTO powered added aircompressor. When an air compressor is added, powered by a PTO, generally more engineering isrequired and the unit is more likely to be unable tomake a running attack with CAFS than when anauxiliary engine powered air compressor is added. However, the PTO powered air compressor may beless costly and take up less space. Manufacturersof compact CAFS have provided both auxiliaryengines and PTO driven air compressors totransform a fire truck into a CAFS unit.
APPENDIX MATERIALAuxiliary engine and PTO driven air compressors totransform a fire truck into a CAFS unit are availablefrom compact CAFS manufacturers listed in AppendixA. This appendix also provides listings ofmanufacturers and models along with certain salientcharacteristics and list or GSA prices of compactCAFS units.
The compact CAFS listed in Appendix A are classifiedas auxiliary engine powered or compressed gaspowered. Compressed gas powered compact CAFSare further classified as vehicle carried or backpackcarried. Also listed are auxiliary engine and PTOpowered air compressors for transforming a fire truckinto a CAFS unit. The information in the appendixhas been furnished by the manufacturers and noindependent verification or testing has been done.List prices are as furnished by the manufacturer. Themanufacturer may offer discounts from the list priceto the U.S. Goverment or for the purchase of multipleunits. The listing of equipment in this appendix doesnot constitute an endorsement or approval ordisapproval by the USDA Forest Service of anyequipment, product or service to the exclusion ofothers that may be suitable.
Appendix B contains a listing of compact CAFSmanufacturers and suppliers.
