    System Monitor 2

    Overview The System Monitor enables the control of the cache and provides an overview of the COMOS client.

    Open: Menu "Extra > Monitoring > System Monitor".

    Alternatively, click on any desired object in the Navigator and select the keyboard command [Ctrl+S].

    2.1 COMOS system status "Maximum no. of loaded objects" list

    This list determines at what intervals the System Monitor is updated.

    "COMOS system status" control group Field Description "Number of objects" Number of COMOS objects in the cache. The number of objects is limited by the entry in the

    "Maximum no. of loaded objects" field. See also section Matching the cache and main memory (Page 18).

    "Referenced objects" Number of COMOS objects that are held by components and cannot be removed from memory. Releasing objects does not affect the referenced objects and remain in memory. The number of objects is thus always greater than the number of referenced objects.

    "Cache entries" Number of cache entries. The cache entries result from the number of objects. The number of cache entries is always considerably greater than the number of objects. A cache entry needs considerably less memory than an object. Releasing objects does not affect the cache entries and remain in memory.

    "Hash table size" The cache entries are managed in the hash table. The hash table is made larger if necessary. "Number of collections" Number of COMOS collections in the cache.

  • System Monitor 2.2 Releasing objects (ReleaseObjects, ReleaseAllObjects)

    COMOS Administration 18 Operating Manual, 04/2012, A5E03774611-01

    2.2 Releasing objects (ReleaseObjects, ReleaseAllObjects)

    2.2.1 Matching the cache and main memory The amount of main memory available is not determined dynamically during operations and released as required. Instead, COMOS has the "Maximum no. of loaded objects" function.

    Maximum no. of loaded objects The value selected for "Maximum no. of loaded objects" determines from what point the cache is to be emptied.

    Optimum setting of the "Maximum no. of loaded objects" field The value that is input here is stored in the COMOS function "MaxLoadedObjects" ("Workset" class).

    The limit to be set for the maximum number of objects to be loaded depends on the amount of free memory available.

    Example: Once you have entered a new value, COMOS checks within the "System Monitor" to see whether the specified high limit has already been reached. If it has, any objects that are no longer required are deleted from the cache.

    In order to prevent the cache from overflowing, check that the number of objects in the cache is below the upper limit for objects to be loaded before you perform any actions which require a lot of space, such as copying a unit.

    Note

    If you set the limit for "Maximum no. of loaded objects" too low, even the items that cannot be released, such as modified objects or referenced objects, could cause you to exceed the limit. In such a case, objects would be released unnecessarily.

  • System Monitor 2.2 Releasing objects (ReleaseObjects, ReleaseAllObjects)

    COMOS Administration Operating Manual, 04/2012, A5E03774611-01 19

    2.2.2 Conducting an object release The object release, in other words, a partial or total clearing of the cache, is always done as the result of a user action.

    Never globally delete the object cache, because COMOS runs more slowly without caching if there is sufficient main memory.

    If the memory no longer has sufficient space, you can release it manually.

    Manual deletion: releasing unused objects (ReleaseAllObjects) Right-click on the "Total objects" field on the status bar that is at the bottom of the COMOS window. Select the "Release unused objects" command.

    ● The COMOS cache is emptied.

    ● The value given in "Maximum no. of loaded objects" is no longer evaluated.

    Clearing as the result of a user action (workset.ReleaseObjects)

    The following actions also call up the ReleaseObjects COMOS function:

    ● Save all

    ● ScanDevices

    ● Global test

    ● Connecting a project to or disconnecting a project from a base project or a system project

    ● Copying a project.

    Effect of ReleaseObjects: The value in "Maximum no. of loaded objects" is evaluated and the cache is cleared as far as possible if it has more objects in it than the specified value.

    Effect of clearing the cache

    All saved objects are cleared.

    The following are not deleted:

    ● Modified objects and those that have not yet been saved

    ● Referenced objects

    ● Cache entries

  • System Monitor 2.2 Releasing objects (ReleaseObjects, ReleaseAllObjects)

    COMOS Administration 20 Operating Manual, 04/2012, A5E03774611-01

    Function involved Result MaxLoadedObjects The number of objects, above which objects are to be deleted from memory by

    ReleaseObjects. ClearCache Deletes all objects from the memory.

    The status corresponds to that present after reinitialization of the workset. Old object variables are no longer valid. Reset the CurrentUser and CurrentProject. When working with COMOS, you must use ReleaseObjects.

    ReleaseObjects Deletes the released objects from the cache if MaxLoadedObjects is exceeded. ReleaseAllObjects Same as ReleaseObjects

    "MaxLoadedObjects" is not evaluated.

    Database 44.1 Import/export of databases

    4.1.1 Synchronized databases

    4.1.1.1 Area of application COMOS can manage versions for distributed data storage. In this case, the stocks of data of physically separated databases which can be synchronized. The synchronization is triggered manually and carried out automatically.

    Database synchronization is only possible for base projects. It is not recommended to use this technology for engineering projects.

    4.1.1.2 Preparation: DB identifier

    Limits of synchronization You have prepared a COMOS DB and made a special copy of it. If two completely independent databases have been created, these databases cannot be synchronized retrospectively.

    Procedure To prepare the DB identifier, proceed as follows:

    1. Click on "Administrator > System > Data maintenance (support)" in the menu and open the "DB organization" tab.

    2. Enter any letter in the "DB identifier" field.

    You are not allowed to use any letters that were used at any time by any other database as a DB identifier.

    4.1.1.3 Creating the synchronized copy (ExportDB) Start the "ExportDB.exe" program in the "\bin" directory found in the COMOS root directory. See also section "Export (Page 31)".

    Source In the "Source", you specify the database to which you previously assigned a DB identifier.

  • Database 4.1 Import/export of databases

    COMOS Administration 28 Operating Manual, 04/2012, A5E03774611-01

    Target Enter a new database in the "Target" field.

    ● Access

    Create a new database.

    ● Server databases (SQL, Oracle)

    Create a new database and open it with COMOS at least once.

    "Without deleted objects" option This option is not evaluated during a synchronization. In principle, deleted objects are ignored during a synchronization operation.

    See also section Export (Page 31).

    DB synchronization Activate the option switch with "DB synchronization".

    DB identifier The "DB identifier" field appears as soon as the option switch is activated. Here, you can input a letter that has not been used yet.

    Projects In the "Projects" dialog window you can state which projects are to be exported synchronized. There are two available options:

    ● Mark the specific projects that are to be exported synchronized.

    ● Mark all projects.

    Depending on the database and the amount of data, each option can save time under the appropriate circumstances.

    Export Click the "Export" button.

    Note

    If there is a lot of data, the export process may take several hours.

    The export operation cannot be carried out while the system is running.

    4.1.1.4 Command line mode (ExportDB.ini) You can start ExportDB via a command line. In that case, the required parameters are taken from an ini file.

    To notify ExportDB.exe of the ini file when the call is made, type the absolute or relative name (relative to "ExportDB.exe") of the ini file in the command line.

    Alternatively, enter just "/". In that case, a search is made with the fixed name "ExportDB.ini" parallel to "ExportDB.exe".

    A log file "ExportDB.txt" is created in the temp directory.

    Example [Source]

    ConnectionString = "D:\ComosApp\DB\RelDBV7_1\comos.mdb"

    [Target]

    ConnectionString = "C:\Temp\DBTest.mdb"

    WithDeleted = False

    DBSyncName = ""

    RootDir = ""

    AllProjects = False

    Overlays = True

    [Projects]

    COMOS_EE

    XTest

    You can also integrate Oracle and SQL servers in this way:

    ConnectionString = "[ORACLE]pt_ORACLE"

    or

    ConnectionString = "[SQL - SERVER]pt_sql_server"

    Explanations ● ConnectionString

    You can input an mdb or a server instance as the connection string:

    ConnectionString = "[SQL - SERVER]pt_sql_server"

    ConnectionString = "D:\ComosApp\DB\RelDBV7_1\comos.mdb"

    ● WithDeleted

    Specifies whether objects with a delete flag are exported.

  • Database 4.1 Import/export of databases

    COMOS Administration 30 Operating Manual, 04/2012, A5E03774611-01

    ● DBSyncName

    Is used to synchronize the database. This option must be have been specified at the time of the first import.

    ● RootDir

    Sets the document directory as in " Administrator > Support": "DB-Orga: Document directory" tab.

    ● AllProjects = True

    If all projects are exported, then you do not need to list the individual projects in the third section.

    ● Projects

    Is only evaluated if AllProjects is not set to True.

    Application example You can use a scheduled task to carry out regular export operations by specifying the command line.

    4.1.1.5 Synchronizing or integrating data (ImportDB.exe) Open the "ImportDB.exe" program from the "\bin" director
