― Maya AngelouSchizophrenia Awareness WeekEach year the Mental Health Foundation ACT (MHF) together with the Mental Illness Fellowship of Australia (MIFA) and the Fellowships around the nation host Schizophrenia Awareness Week (SAW).

SAW is a national awareness week held annually in May. It commenced in 1986, and this year will be held from the 20th to 27th May 2018.

The date for SAW generally coincides with the week of World Schizophrenia Awareness Day (24th May each year).

People with schizophrenia are among the most highly stigmatized and socially marginalized people in our community.

Through SAW, MHF aims to: Raise community awareness of Schizophrenia and other mental illnesses; Raise community awareness about the impact of mental illness on families and carers; and Reduce the stigma in the local community surrounding schizophrenia and other mental

illnesses.

What is Schizophrenia?Schizophrenia is an illness, a medical condition. It affects the normal functioning of the brain, interfering with a person’s ability to think, feel and act. Some do recover completely, and, with time, most find that their symptoms improve.

However, for many, it is a prolonged illness which can involve years of distressing symptoms and disability. People affected by schizophrenia have just one ‘personality,’ just like everyone else. It is a myth and totally untrue that those affected have a so-called ‘split personality’.

In 2018, the national theme for Schizophrenia Awareness Week is “Do What You Can Do” which is about empowering every person in Australia to do anything within their individual power to overcome stigma, learn about mental illness, and be inclusive.

“Do What You Can Do” is about simple actions such as (but not limited to): Learning about severe mental illness & busting myths Sharing information about mental illness Hosting an event to talk about mental illness (say in your workplace) Reaching out to someone with mental illness Not judging people with mental illnesses Donating to continue stigma reduction work.

To help achieve these aims, MHF is asking all Newsletter readers and their networks to “Do What You Can Do” to help reduce stigma, bust myths, and promote help-seeking.

For additional information go to www.mhf.org.au – ph.: 02 6282 6658.

ADACAS Survey – Impaired decision making ability in health servicesADACAS would like to know about how people with impaired decision making ability make healthcare decisions. We would also like to know about the needs and experiences of carers in supporting healthcare decisions.

As part of collecting information for the project we want to hear about the experiences of people with impaired decision making ability and their carers through surveys and conversation.

We want to ensure the availability of support for people with impaired decision making ability when they are making a healthcare decision. We hope this will improve the active participation of people with impaired decision making ability in health services.

Throughout this survey we use the phrase ‘people with impaired decision making ability’. We use it to include people with intellectual impairment, dementia, people experiencing mental ill-health or people with an acquired brain injury, all of which can impair decision making ability. It also refers to people whose decision making ability may not be recognized by others.

If you are a person with impaired decision making ability and you would like to complete this survey please click the link https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/rka-decisionmakers

If you are a carer or family member of someone with impaired decision making ability please click the link https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/RKA-carers

If you know someone with impaired decision making ability who would like to complete the survey but needs support to do so, ADACAS is able to provide support to complete the survey. You can contact us at: Phone: (02) 6242 5060 Email: [email protected]

Do you know about My Health Record? My Health Record is here and by the end of 2018, a My Health Record will be created for every Australian, unless they choose not to have one. So what is a My Health Record?

Simply put, having a My Health Record means your important health information such as allergies, current conditions and treatments, medicine details, pathology reports or diagnostic imaging reports can be digitally stored in one place, allowing you access to a summary of your health record when you need it.My Health Record can provide many valuable benefits for older Australians. You don’t need to remember the dates of tests or medicine names or dosages, as you can access them online through the My Health Record website, and you can also nominate and give access to relatives to assist you to manage your health. So for us Canberrans that like to travel north for the colder months, our healthcare information can be viewed securely online – available in one place and easily accessible by doctors, specialists or hospitals.

There will be a three-month “window” announced later this year when people who choose not to have a My Health Record can opt out of the program (and you can cancel your record at any time if you later decide you don’t want to have one). For further information on and to register for My Health Record, visit https://myhealthrecord.gov.au or ask your GP for more information.
