Community Service

Page 2: Community services

The Judge of Prosecutor can impose a community

service sentence

Page 3: Community services

By performing a community service an

offender can pay back to society

Page 4: Community services

There are two kinds of

community services:

Page 5: Community services

Working in group projects, whereby the

offender is supervised by a work master from the

Probation Service

Page 6: Community services

Or working for an external

organisation

Page 7: Community services

In both cases the offender will work for the general benefit of

society

Page 8: Community services

For instance doing the dishes in a kitchen of a nursing home

Page 9: Community services

Or working in a second hand shop

Page 10: Community services

Or cleaning parks and neighbourhoods

Page 11: Community services

A community sentence lasts maximally 240

hours

Page 12: Community services

The probation Service decides what work the

offender should do

Page 13: Community services

The offender is obliged to fullfill the

work properly

Page 14: Community services

If he doesn't, he can still go

to prison

Page 15: Community services

The community service can be imposed

for many offences, but

not for serious acts of violence or sexual offences

Page 16: Community services

A major advantage is that community sentences prevent damage caused by prison detention

(loss of home, relationship and job)

Page 17: Community services

because the offender can still participate in

the community

Page 18: Community services

In addition offenders get used to work routine and gain work experience

Page 19: Community services

This reduces the chance of re-offending considerably; much more than after a prison sentence

This is how the Probation Service contributes to a safer society
