Rashi: He turned his eyes and heart to suffer with them A few weeks before Rosh Hashana, Reb Nachum, the baal tefillah for the Yomim Noraim in the shul of R. Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, zl, took ill and died. After the period of mourning had passed, the elders of the congregation approached Rav Yosef Chaim to ask about a replacement for Reb Nachum. The Rabbi told the people not to worry. There was only a week left to Rosh Hashanah and still there had been no mention of an appointment. Once again they ap- proached Rav Yosef Chaim, and once again they were told that they would have a baal tefillah. "Rebbe tomorrow is Rosh HaShana and we still do not have a cha- zan." It was Rosh HaShana and the shofar was about to be blown. All eyes were on Rav Yosef Chaim. Suddenly, he arose from his seat and went over to Reb Nochum's son. He bent over him and said: "You are to take your father's place and be the baal musaf!”. "But I am not prepared. How can I go up to lead the congregation?" stammered the young man. Rav Yosef Chaim responded in a soothing voice: "Do not be concerned. You have listened to your father daven for years. I am sure that you will do well." After the davening a group of esteemed lay people went over to Rav Yosef Chaim and respectfully asked why he chose a mourner to lead the ser- vices on Rosh HaShana. "Perhaps you did not realize that Reb Nachum's widow was with us today in shul. Can you imagine the grief and sorrow that she is feeling on this day when her beloved husband was usually the chazzan? Imagine the pain she would have suffered if someone else had davened the tefillah that her husband had led for so many years. Therefore I sent her son to take his late father's place. I felt that the nachas of seeing her son at the bima might in some way mitigate her pain. We are admonished by the Torah to be sensitive to the needs of a widow, and that appointing Reb Nachum's son to daven outweighed the law that prohibits a mourner from leading the tefillah on Yom Tov. Good Shabbos, Rabbi Cohen

Feeling the pain of another person – Shemos Shemos 2:11 ….(Moshe) went out to his brothers….

Rashi: He turned his eyes and heart to suffer with them

A few weeks before Rosh Hashana, Reb Nachum, the baal tefillah for the

Yomim Noraim in the shul of R. Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, zl, took ill and

died. After the period of mourning had passed, the elders of the congregation

approached Rav Yosef Chaim to ask about a replacement for Reb Nachum. The

Rabbi told the people not to worry. There was only a week left to Rosh Hashanah

and still there had been no mention of an appointment. Once again they ap-

proached Rav Yosef Chaim, and once again they were told that they would have a

baal tefillah. "Rebbe tomorrow is Rosh HaShana and we still do not have a cha-

zan." It was Rosh HaShana and the shofar was about to be blown. All eyes were on

Rav Yosef Chaim. Suddenly, he arose from his seat and went over to Reb Nochum's

son. He bent over him and said: "You are to take your father's place and be the

baal musaf!”. "But I am not prepared. How can I go up to lead the congregation?"

stammered the young man. Rav Yosef Chaim responded in a soothing voice: "Do

not be concerned. You have listened to your father daven for years. I am sure that

you will do well." After the davening a group of esteemed lay people went over to

Rav Yosef Chaim and respectfully asked why he chose a mourner to lead the ser-

vices on Rosh HaShana. "Perhaps you did not realize that Reb Nachum's widow was

with us today in shul. Can you imagine the grief and sorrow that she is feeling on

this day when her beloved husband was usually the chazzan? Imagine the pain she

would have suffered if someone else had davened the tefillah that her husband had

led for so many years. Therefore I sent her son to take his late father's place. I felt

that the nachas of seeing her son at the bima might in some way mitigate her pain.

We are admonished by the Torah to be sensitive to the needs of a widow, and that

appointing Reb Nachum's son to daven outweighed the law that prohibits a

mourner from leading the tefillah on Yom Tov.
