Welcome to Turlock, the second-largestcommunity in Stanislaus County, located inthe “Heart of the Valley.” Since 1949, whenthe Turlock Chamber of Commerce wasfirst chartered, its members have worked toimprove the vitality and quality of life in thegreater Turlock area. Over the past 62 yearsTurlock has grown to over 70,000 residents,and still retains its small-town charm and

diverse agricultural heritage and hospitality, all the whileconforming to the ever-changing dynamics of the area.

This past year was a significant year for business development;several ‘new businesses’ are making their home here whileothers are expanding. The Turlock community is pleased to seethe development in all areas of business, from retail toproduction.

The Turlock Chamber of Commerce has had an outstandingyear, and has received wonderful recognition for the effort ofits board, staff, volunteers and partners. It has taken an activerole in ensuring that growth and economic stability continuesin a positive manner. The goal is continually being realizedthrough teamwork with community leaders, through thesupport of area businesses and through the hard work ofvolunteers.

Turlock is proud to be the home of MedicAlert and CaliforniaState University Stanislaus, as well as the Stanislaus CountyFair Grounds. Recreation abounds in Turlock with more than14 soccer fields, three volleyball courts, four softball fields andone Hardball Field, and you can visit Turlock Lake just a fewmiles out of town. Turlock is proud to be considered a familyoriented community.

As the voice of business in Turlock, the Chamber’s goal is toadvocate for our members’ best interests and for those of ourcommunity. Being Turlock’s number one business resource,citizens look to the Chamber for the area's economic well-being. That is why we seek to have a major impact on business,the creation of wealth and future growth of the GreaterTurlock Area.

2013 is going to be an exciting year and Iappreciate the opportunity to serve thebusiness community as the Chairman ofthe Turlock Chamber of Commerce. Wehave a great group of people assembled forthe board of directors who will work hardto promote a strong local economy.

Turlock is an amazing city and a great placeto raise a family and run a business. It offers an outstandingquality of life and has created a place where people can live,work, learn, shop and play. As a small business owner inTurlock, I appreciate what it means to be living and working ina business friendly community. To name a few, Turlock has:

1) A welcoming attitude to people, families and businesses.2) Pro-business approach by local government officials.3) CSU Stanislaus for work force training and education.4) An active and supportive Chamber of Commerce

I also appreciate the burden of rising health care costs beingplaced on businesses around the country. Most recent estimatesfor 2011 annual premiums for employer-sponsored familyhealth coverage average over $15,000 per year ($11,000 coveredby employers and $4,000 covered by employees). With theSupreme Court decision to uphold the 2010 health reform lawwe will see even more of the cost burden shifted to individualworkers and businesses. In order to offset these external costpressures we must invest in well designed, coordinatedemployee wellness initiatives, rather that more costly diseasemanagement and injury care. The Turlock Chamber ofCommerce is leading the way with creative new health careinitiatives for member businesses. Fortunately for Turlock wealso have a community hospital with excellent physicians.

The Turlock Chamber of Commerce will work hard topromote local businesses and local community. They willprovide networking opportunities and represent the interests ofbusiness with government. The Chamber will take theappropriate steps to ensure economic growth and thereforeeconomic stability.

The Dog Park is approximately 1.5 acresand open daily from dawn to dusk. Itoffers shade trees, benches, receptacles,dog drinking fountain, dog pot stationsand staging areas that are fenced for

small and large dogs. Rules for the DogPark are posted within the park.

This 30-acre complex includes ninesoccer fields, restroom facility, twosoftball diamonds, outdoor amphitheaterand picnic and playground areas. The Westside Industrial SpecificPlan includes 2,600 acres thatwill accommodate and nurturethe development of a majorindustrial/commercial center in

Turlock’s industrial west side. Thecity of Turlock has prepared WISP tofacilitate economic and job developmentthrough orderly growth anddevelopment. The plan was preparedduring a time of significant change in thestructure of the national economy. Theplan was adopted in 2006. A CertifiedEnvironmental Impact Report has alsobeen adopted, saving significant timeand money for those that want todevelop.

Many types of manufacturing jobs havedeclined nationally or have beentransferred elsewhere. However, theessential need for food and agriculturalproducts indicate an opportunity tocreate a center for an enduring and

sustainable economy based onagricultural products and relatedprocesses and services. It is anticipatedthat the benefits available from WISPand the Enterprise Zone will stimulateindustrial development.

In addition to the development of WISP,the city has invested $15 million inbackbone infrastructure improvementsto provide “shovel ready” sites forindustrial development.

A significant portion of the GreaterTurlock Area, including the entire WISParea, is located in Stanislaus County’sEnterprise Zone. The Enterprise Zone isa state-sponsored tax benefit programdesigned to reduce the cost of doingbusiness.

There are several areas in Turlockdesignated for retailand office use,including a recently

The history of how Turlock wasnamed varies; however, somebelieve it originated from theterm ‘turlough,’ an Irish dry lake.Founded on December 22, 1871

by prominent grain farmer John WilliamMitchell, the city was comprised of a postoffice, a depot, a grain warehouse and afew other buildings. Mitchell and hisbrother were successful businessmen,buying land and developing large herds ofcattle and sheep that were sold to goldminers and others as they arrived. Theywere also leaders in wheat farming andcultivated tracts of land under the tenantsystem. Eventually, the Mitchell’s ownedmost of the area, over 100,000 acres, fromKeyes to Atwater. In the early 20thcentury, 20-acre lots from the Mitchellestate were sold for $20 an acre.

Turlock experienced economic andagricultural growth and development inthe early 1900’s and was incorporated in1908. A thriving community with adiverse population, that brought theirskills, ideas, capital, culture and religiousbeliefs to this area. Turlock prospered andbecame the hub of activity throughout theend of the 19th century. A Board of Trade(known today as the Turlock Chamber ofCommerce) was formed, a school district,a newspaper and numerous religious andcivic organizations. By 1960 businesseshad grown and Turlock became home toCalifornia State University Stanislaus.

Today with a population over 70,000,Turlock has achieved their early cityplanning goals of creating a safeenvironment, a strong school system andmaintaining their hometown atmosphere.Economically sound and agriculturallyelite, Turlock continues to promotegrowth and development thatcomplements both the city’s business andindustry, as well as the needs of itsresidents.
