Jon Watts A native of Kearney, Jon has been the director of business services and accounts payable for the University of Nebraska at Kearney since 2013. Previously, he served as assistant director of business services. Jon is married to Erin (Altmaier) Watts. They have three children: Ava, Brody, and Mason. A product of Kearney Public Schools, Jon attended Northeast Elementary, Horizon Middle School and graduated from Kearney High School in 2000. Jon earned a bachelor’s degree in communication from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 2004 and a master’s degree in Management from Bellevue University in 2009. Jon is a two-time president of UNK’s staff senate and an active member of the Kearney Public Schools Board of Education. “We have a responsibility for our community’s future,” Jon said. “Community Partners is a proven and tested way to confront and address health- related challenges facing our community. When you are serious about having a positive impact on your community, you look for organizations that have a plan and a record of success. Community Partners has both. It was a logical choice to contribute both time and treasure.” Jonathan Nikkila Jonathan is also a native of Kearney. He attended Kenwood Elementary and Kearney Catholic High School, and later graduated Summa Cum Laude from Hillsdale College in Michigan. Jonathan and his wife, Miriam, have four children, ages 7, 5, 3, and 10 months. Jonathan has been a member of the Kearney City Council since 2012. Before that, he served as a member of the city’s Board of Adjustment. Jonathan is also the director of government affairs for the American Federation for Children, a national public policy organization that focuses on K-12 education. ough the organization is based in Washington, D.C., he works remotely from Kearney because of the community spirit, family-friendly environment, and less stressful pace of life. Jonathan is excited to partner with Community Partners because of its tremendous track record in executing important projects related to health issues in Buffalo County. He appreciates that Community Partners is contributing to our community in more ways than nearly anyone can imagine, and doing it effectively. Jonathan’s vision for Buffalo County is continuing to cultivate and celebrate the “get it done” attitude that defines our community. He appreciates that when our area is faced with an opportunity or a problem individuals step up, without need of fanfare. He believes Community Partners is the epitome of this community spirit. Grace Fellowship’s bounce house was a favorite for all the kids.

Safe Routes to School Coordinator Kate Hannon helps kids use the bike blender to make healthy fruit smoothies.

Everyone from kids to adults enjoyed the simple D.I.Y. yard games.

New Life Assembly brought an assortment of carnival games that were a big hit.

Coalition Providing Alzheimer’s Education Sessions in JulyTh e Community Coalition to Improve Alzheimer’s/Dementia Health is off ering three free “Lunch & Learn” sessions. Th ey are part of an educational series that will take place throughout July. Th e series is part of the Helping Humanity grant they received from a UNK class last year. Th e sessions will take place Tuesdays at 12 p.m. and cover a range of topics from the basics of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, to recognizing ten signs of the diseases, to eff ectively communicating with family members, friends, and others who are dealing with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Th e lesson material is provided by the Alzheimer’s Association.

Th ere will be three sessions in the series. “Th e Basics: Memory Loss, Dementia, and Alzheimer’s

Disease” will be presented July 15 at the Peterson Activity Center. “Know the 10 Signs: Early Detection Matters” will be presented July 22 at the Kearney Public Library. And “How to Communicate with a Person with Memory Loss” will be presented July 29 at Good Samaritan Hospital’s West Tower Classroom. Attendees are also encouraged to bring their own lunch, though they will be able to purchase lunch at the July 15 session.

LeAnn served as the UNK representative on the Community Partners board since 2005. In that time, LeAnn served as chair of Positive Pressure, leading the coalition in developing policy and advocacy to prevent underage drinking. She worked diligently to coordinate community and campus prevention programs to produce a greater impact. Th ank you, LeAnn, for your commitment to building a healthier Buff alo County. We wish you the best in your upcoming adventures! “LeAnn was a wonderful addition to Positive Pressure for so many years,” said Positive Pressure Coordinator Tana Nelsen. “She was an essential part in expanding the TIPS (Training in Intervention ProcedureS) program onto UNK’s campus and was even coalition chair in 2010. We are excited to announce our new name: United Against Violence. Our new logo will be ready as we begin distributing Second Step programming to area schools.

A pilot project, Health HUB, reached its goal of enrolling 250 clients to work with community health workers to improve health outcomes.
