COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS
MGMCRI ever believes in reaching out to the under privileged people and lending them
supported by way of looking after an important aspect of their lives-their health. This is being
facilitated through regular conduct of health and awareness program especially by the
department of community medicine.
CAMPAIGNS
WORLD BREAST FEEDING WEEK
Every year, the first week of August is observed as Breast feeding week, the World over. The department
of pediatrics observed the same this year too, with the usual vigor and the eighth time, since the inception
of this institute.
In this connection several events were organized at MGMCRI over a span of one week. These includes an
essay competition for the MBBS students, on this years theme, Breast feeding a vital emergency
response. A poster competition on the same theme was conducted for the students of nursing college.
Counseling on the various aspects of the mothers in the post natal wards and antenatal clinics of the
hospital and also in the health centers.
WORLD HEART DAY
India is poised to become the world capital of heart diseases contributing to 60% of patients with
cardiovascular problems by the year 2010.the world heart federation, o nongovernmental organization
(NGO), is committed to helping people achieve a longer and better life through prevention and control of
heart diseases and strokes with a focus on under developed and developing countries. It is observed on the
last Sunday of September, every year. The purpose is to increase the awareness among the general
publics, regarding threat of cardiovascular diseases and advocate the importance of incorporating a

healthy life style into the peoples daily work life. The theme for this year is work with heart that
emphasizes work towards wellness, and company health screening. The theme of the year work with the
heat has approached us as a grim reminder the large magnitude of problems we face as healthcare
providers and policy makers. We should be proactive in promoting awareness regarding cardiovascular
problems, with a view to prevent the dubious distinction of world capital of heart diseases.
HEALTH CAMPS
i. A special ENT camp was organized on 02.07.2009 at Andarmullipallam near Parangipettai,Tamil nadu where 217 patients were offered treatment by specialists from department of Oto-
Rhino-Laryngology.
ii. Specialists from the department of ophthalmology rendered their services to 219 patients, atanother special camp held on 09.07.2009, at Samiyarpettai, near Parangipettai, Tamil nadu.
iii. A special general medical camp was organized on 24.07.2009, where, in addition to the 176patients for various medical ailments, health awareness was also created regarding the common
complaints, their prevention and cure.
iv. A health checkup camp for employees of PASIC was organized on 20.08.2009, atKaruvadikuppam. One hundred and forty five people were the beneficiaries.
v. A multispecialty camp was held at venkata nagar, Puducherry on 27.08.2009. The camp wasattended by 644 people and elicited and enthusiastic public response.
vi. In all, a total of 1811 patients were the beneficiaries at this above camps among them, 911patients were referred to MGMCRI for institutional care. In addition, minor procedures such as
injections, cleaning and dressing were performed for 318 and 43 patients respectively. The urban
and rural health centers attached to MGMCRI are actively involved in providing preventive and
promotive health service, besides offering the basic medical care to the community, in general.

vii. During the three month period, between July to September 2009, 4787 people had reported at theurban heath center(UHC), while 3861 people were treated at the rural health center(RHC), for
their ailments. Another awareness talk on the topic importance of immunization and family
planning was delivered at the OPD clinic of the RHC, on 17.09.09. The talk evoked an active
and avid response from the public
