Community Outreach Program of Roanoke Newsletter spring 2015

In 26 years Community Outreach has served hundreds of children all over the city. Together we have provided direct services to meet direct needs: food, clothes, school supplies, transportation, etc. Meeting these needs of Roanoke children is at the forefront of our mission. As we look to the future and look back at the past, we have found that these needs have changed. This year has been filled with great times of learning, observation of community concerns, and partnering with others who share a passion for children in Roanoke. In looking at our kid's most recent needs reading and literacy are of the greatest concern, so in Fall 2015 we will launch a new program: Community Literacy Program (CLP). This new program is devoted to teaching early elementary students to read at or above grade level every day after school. This is a big change from what we have done in the past, but to be effective we must have more time with students and their families at the most critical ages for learning. We will also teach parents every Friday, during family night, the ins and outs of reading and helping their child succeed in school. We hope to start this program small with 10 Kindergarten and first graders 5 days a week, then add grades each following year until we have 30 spots for Kindergarten through 3rd grade students. Our programs at Fairview, West End and Huntington Court United Methodist Churches will continue as normal and will not be affected by this change. Trinity will also continue pretty much as normal three days a week. What can you do to help? We need your generosity to ensure we have the materials we can teach from. The literacy curriculum we will be using, Kidzlit, has a onetime cost of $2800. As we expand services slowly, COP will be looking for $25,000 more per year to provide this program above and beyond what we already receive in donations. Your prayers, donations, event planning, and community connections will help to make this program a success. If you have questions or would like to help sponsor this program please call me at (540) 314- 7911. Newsletter of the United Methodist Community Outreach Program of Roanoke. The Community Outreach Program is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization improving the quality of life of inner city children living in poverty by providing tutoring, evening meals, school supplies and programs such as U Feed Others (UFO) weekend meals, Clothing Closet, Christmas Angels and Camp. From September to May children are transported from their homes three nights each week. After eating a volunteer provided dinner, children are engaged in learning: math, spelling, reading, and even physical education. The programming is varied and tailored to individual needs and goals.

Transcript of Community Outreach Program of Roanoke Newsletter spring 2015

In 26 years Community Outreach has served hundreds of

children all over the city. Together we have provided direct

services to meet direct needs: food, clothes, school supplies,

transportation, etc. Meeting these needs of Roanoke children is

at the forefront of our mission. As we look to the future and look

back at the past, we have found that these needs have

changed. This year has been filled with great times of learning,

observation of community concerns, and partnering with others

who share a passion for children in Roanoke.

In looking at our kid's most recent needs reading and literacy

are of the greatest concern, so in Fall 2015 we will launch a new

program: Community Literacy Program (CLP). This new program

is devoted to teaching early elementary students to read at or

above grade level every day after school. This is a big change

from what we have done in the past, but to be effective we

must have more time with students and their families at the most

critical ages for learning. We will also teach parents every Friday,

during family night, the ins and outs of reading and helping their

child succeed in school.

We hope to start this program small with 10 Kindergarten and

first graders 5 days a week, then add grades each following

year until we have 30 spots for Kindergarten through 3rd grade

students.

Our programs at Fairview, West End and Huntington Court

United Methodist Churches will continue as normal and will not

be affected by this change. Trinity will also continue pretty much

as normal three days a week.

What can you do to help? We need your generosity to ensure

we have the materials we can teach from. The literacy

curriculum we will be using, Kidzlit, has a onetime cost of

$2800. As we expand services slowly, COP will be looking for

$25,000 more per year to provide this program above and

beyond what we already receive in donations. Your prayers,

donations, event planning, and community connections will

help to make this program a success. If you have questions or would like to help sponsor this program please call me at (540) 314-

Serving all God’s children through mentoring academically, spiritually, emotionally, and physically.

OR CURRENT RESIDENT

It’s just $145 to send an inner city Roanoke child

for a full week of camp, thanks to generous UMC

subsidies. This is often the only opportunity our

kids have to get out of the city and have a fun

vacation. So far we’ve only raised enough for 13

kids to have this experience.
