Clutha Gold Trail Charitable Trust (Lawrence – Waihola extension)The mission of the Clutha Gold Trail Charitable Trust is to extend the Clutha Gold cycle/walking trail through to Waihola. It currently finishes at Lawrence. The track will offer a great recreation opportunity for locals, and visitors on their cycling journey will stop in Milton and Waihola, boosting the local economy.

The group is proud of achieving nearly 100% permission from affected landowners to go on their land and is ready to begin construction.

People can support the Trust by being vocal in their support for the track. The group needs expertise in funding, drawing up tender documents and roading/cycling trail construction.

Clutha YouthThe Clutha District Youth Workers deliver wide ranging and various programmes in schools and communities across the whole of the Clutha district.

These programmes focus on areas such as peer-relationships, confidence building, resilience, self-belief, and self-esteem. Topics can include grief and loss, anger management, building strength, social connection and interactive drama.

Coastal Classic Mountain Bike and RunThis popular Taieri Mouth community-led event takes place on Sunday 4 November this year (2018). There are a variety of entry options – from the 3.7km walk/run for the casual fun-runner to the 45km Tough Nuts Mountain Bike Race. There’s even an E-bike option this year. All funds from the event go back into Taieri Mouth community projects. The organisers invite people to participate in the event this year and support the Taieri Mouth community. They also welcome volunteers to help out with the logistics of running this successful event.

Coutts Gully Wetland Restoration GroupThe Coutts Gully Wetland Restoration Group aims to reduce pests around the wetland in Taieri Mouth to give the bird-life a chance to increase. They’d like to see bittern in the wetland again. The group have increased the number of rat and stoat traps over the past year. They plan to continue extending the trapping. The group welcomes volunteers and financial support. People can participate and learn about predator control and enjoy the wetland.

Lake Waihola - Waipori Wetlands SocietyThe Lake Waihola – Waipori Wetlands Society is a community-based organisation made up of a wide variety of people who love the lakes and want to protect the environmental and lifestyle opportunities the area provides for our region. They aim to sustainably manage the Lake Waihola Waipori wetlands and enhance the area for the benefit of all communities of interest.

The 2175-hectare Waipori Waihola wetland system is one of the largest and most significant remaining lowland wetland systems in New Zealand. It is a diverse and highly productive ecosystem that supports threated species such as the giant kokopu and the South Island Fernbird. The wetland is of great significance to Kai tahu and an important recreational hunting and fishing area.

Methodist MissionThe Methodist Mission in Milton operate a social support service out of the Tokomairiro Community Hub in Milton. They are also establishing a new pre-school “Milton Little Citizens” in Spenser St, which is due to open Spring 2018.

Milton Angling ClubThe Milton Angling Club was established in 1954 and is still going strong. The club encourages people from all walks of life to enjoy their local river. They’re holding 17 events and competitions this year. If you would like further information about the Milton Angling Club call 027 2010 588.

Milton Area PromotionsThe mission of Milton Area Promotions is to encourage the development and retention of infrastructure and services to improve the social welfare of our community. They are fostering and encouraging community wellness by promoting, beautifying and developing the Milton district as a great place to visit, live and work in. They’re a group which, with the help of community, can provide facilities which are not covered by the Clutha District Council.

Last year the group successfully developed the cycle park in Moore Park, adding more paths and a flying fox. They upgraded the main street flags and continue to beautify the southern entrance to Milton.

They are very keen to lead more Milton projects which will benefit the Milton community, and they welcome volunteers to join in projects or to be involved in their committee.

Milton Bowling ClubThe Milton Bowling Club promotes the sport of bowls and offers friendship and fellowship to local community. They plan to hold social bowls evening to generate new members. People can support the group by coming along and joining in.

Milton Bridge ClubThe Milton Bridge Club offers the opportunity for like-minded people to come together to play and enjoy the game of bridge. They regularly run social evenings. They’re proud of maintaining their membership over the past year but would encourage more people to come and join them.

Milton Bruce Returned and Service Association IncThe Milton Bruce RSA provides welfare support for veterans, family and members in warm, inviting club rooms. They support and remember the sacrifices made by soldiers of the district by the way of ANZAC day services, Fields of Remembrance, Armistice Day, Passchendaele. Raffles are run all year, with moneys generated go towards helping the community (e.g. sponsorship for students, Cure Kids, sports clubs etc.).

Poppy Appeal funds are used to assist families in needs. RSA holds many activities during the year, including fishing competition, Spud dig, 4WD and Car Rally, Kids Xmas Party to name a few. The club rooms are available for private functions, birthdays, anniversaries and funerals.

Milton Coronation Hall SocietyThe Milton Coronation Hall Society manages the historic Coronation Hall on the main street of Milton. They are raising funds to restore the hall.

Milton Cottage Craft GroupThe Milton Cottage Craft group promotes crafts in general eg wool crafts, patchwork, stitchery, and offers community a social get-together. The group has been going for 48 years and is still successful.

This social group meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month in the lounge at the Tokomairiro Co-operating Church on Union Street, Milton. They start at 10am – 3pm. Bring along the craft you are working on and your lunch. People wanting to learn a new craft are welcome. People can find out more by checking out the what’s on in the Clutha Leader.

Milton Country ClubThe Milton Country Club is a Chartered Club and a member of Clubs New Zealand. Membership with Milton Country Club allows you to enter and enjoy the benefits of not only the Milton club but also approximately 300 clubs in New Zealand as well as Australia. There are also many discounts that members can take advantage of from time to time which come through Clubs New Zealand. New members are always welcome at the Milton Country Club.

Clubs are not just places to have a drink, but they are places where you can meet friends, enjoy a game of pool, snooker or darts for free, participate in social activities such as the Annual Spud Dig Competition, Golf Day, 4WD trips as well as many other social activities that take place throughout the year!

Milton Elder CareMilton Elder Care provides care, support and company for people of our community and offers social activities, outings and friendship. Activities at the centre include crafts, indoor bowls, games, cards, baking, entertainment, speakers and more. They pick up and deliver the clients home, so transport isn’t an issue.

This year they’re proud of bringing their hall up to a better standard by upgrading the kitchen, heating, toilets, insulation, better parking and making it more comfortable for the elderly and volunteers.

They plan to continue recruiting more volunteers and clients to keep going at a sustainable level. People can support ElderCare by volunteering and referring older people that they know may benefit from the companionship of others. They are always looking for financial support.

Milton Euchre GroupThe group provides friendship, camaraderie, cuppas and bickies! They give proceeds to local charities, supporting St Johns, Rescue Helicopter, Hospice last year. They welcome others to join them and play cards! They meet at the RSA rooms on Wednesdays at 1pm.

Milton Garden ClubThe Milton Garden Club offers fellowship with other gardeners, learning about gardening and plants, and holds trips to visit gardens. This year they have successfully increased their membership but still welcome more new members to the club.

Milton Information Centre and Museum (Bruce Museum Trust)The mission of the Bruce Museum Trust is to conserve the history and artefacts pertaining to the Tokomairiro. They welcome both visitors to the district as well as locals, and help people to make the most of their visit with advice and information. The group offers comprehensive information about Milton’s history and early families, providing information on scenic attractions, walks etc in the area and the lower South Island. They also have free internet.

This year, they’d like to digitise their museum collection, catalogue items not already documented, and would like to update some information.

They’d welcome new volunteers to help them, particularly with opening up, and are always looking for people to help with fundraising.

Milton LionsMilton Lions is a community-minded organisation endeavouring to assist all people who reside within the Milton Community and greater district. Milton Primary School Board of TrusteesThe Board of Trustees consists of five parent representatives elected by parents of the school, a staff representative elected by the staff and the principal. The Board is elected for a three-year term.

Milton ScoutsThe purpose of the Milton Scouts is to get young people outside and trying new things, and to help them be more socially aware. The Scouts offers a safe and enjoyable environment for young people the learn, share and grow.

Milton Volunteer Fire BrigadeThis is a volunteer station. That means all members of the Milton brigade dedicate their own time in order to serve the community. They respond to a variety of emergencies in the local area, including fires, medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, search and rescue, civil defence and natural disaster responses. And they offer fire safety advice.

Moturata Organic Community GardenThis new community garden has recently been established in Taieri Mouth, next to the Taieri Beach School. The group has established garden beds and compost heaps ready to plant in the spring. They also run workshops and working bees. Working bees take place on the second Saturday of the month, from 2pm. They welcome everyone to join in and help develop this new community project for Taieri Mouth.

Moturata Taieri WhanauMoturata Taieri Whānau consists of descendants of the original tūpuna living at the Taieri papatipu kāika at Henley in the 1840s, and Kāi Tahu whānau who have moved into the area over the past 150 years. The whānau is recognised as being under the umbrella of Te Rūnanga o Ōtākou, and have a kaitiaki interest in the Taieri area and the wider Otago region shared with in common with other Rūnaka and whānau.

Moturata Taieri Whānau have been restoring rata to Moturata (Taieri Island) and are planning a community predator trapping project for the Taieri River gorge.

Nga Whānau o TokomairiroNga Whānau o Tokomairiro was established in 2003 to support the needs of Māori families within the Tokomairiro district by supporting the development of whānau and community related projects.

They facilitate the learning of te reo Māori, tikanga and Māoritanga (language, customs and culture) for the community. They work with other groups for the good of the community. And they provide governance assistance to Tokomairiro Waiora. This year they’ve been involved with Whānau days, Te wiki o te reo Māori, Matariki celebrations and more.

Project BruceProject Bruce is a community-led development project for the people of Tokomairiro-Milton, Waihola, Taieri Mouth and all the rural bits in-between. It’s our goal to further develop our communities as resilient and resourceful – taking action for the things we care about.

Rotary Club of MiltonThe purpose of Rotary is to support the community and promote goodwill and friendship. Rotary provides people-power to support community projects. They support local people with funds for a variety of activities eg school camps, Outward Bound, resources for schools, people of need. The group welcomes new members.

Senior CitizensMilton Senior Citizens encourage seniors to come along, make new friends in the community. They offer friendship, companionship, entertainment and guest speakers.

Last year the group participated in the seniors’ Masters Games. They’d like to attract more members, and welcome local people over the age of 55 years to support the organisation by attending the senior citizens club.

St JohnSt John provides first-aid and medical response to the Milton area community. In addition to emergency care they also support the St Johns Youth Cadets. They are most proud of starting the Milton St John’s Cadets last year and watching it grow.

They need and welcome more volunteers to help keep the service running. People can call into the station on Eden Street and chat with any of the members who can steer you in the right direction.

Taieri Mouth Amenities SocietyThe Taieri Mouth Amenities Society aims to make improvements to community infrastructure and liaise with the Clutha District Council for the interests of the Taieri Mouth community. They can help residents with communication to the CDC on specific problems (eg drainage, dust suppression etc). They organise working bees for problem areas and encourage people to volunteers their skills to help maintain areas. This year, along with the Taieri Beach School they helped to raise $15,000 to put a new roof on the school and community pool.

They’ll be completing a picnic area at Livingstonia Park this year and hope to finish a re-print of the classic local history book Taieri Mouth and its Surrounding District by Win Parkes. They’ll also be supporting the Coastal Classic Mountain Bike/Run/Walk which takes place in November.

They welcome volunteers and people with ideas.

Te Nohoaka o Tukiauau - Sinclair WetlandsThe Sinclair Wetlands form a 315-hectare portion of the Lakes Waihola-Waipori wetland complex, south of Dunedin, New Zealand. The name Te Nohoaka o Tukiauau acknowledges ‘the dwelling place of Tukiauau’, an early Ngāti Mamoe chief. The area is now owned by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, and is valued as a wāhi taonga (culturally significant site), for mahinga kai (traditional food and resources), conservation, recreation, and education.

They are committed to careful and thoughtful stewardship/kaitiakitanga of the important environment entrusted to them, and work actively to ensure that it is enhanced for future generations to use and enjoy.

They rely on the support of the community, schools, clubs, businesses and organisations, and welcome short term, long term and regular helpers. Experience is not required but a willingness to learn is essential!

Tokomairiro Urban Backyard ProjectTokomairiro Urban Backyard Project is a fledgling community project that aims to provide knowledge and support to the people of Milton so they can eat fresh, nutrient-dense food, grown organically in their own backyards. The project is in the process of creating a demonstration organic garden and orchard, worked by volunteers, and intends to hold regular workshops, education sessions, open days and working bees. Community groups in Milton have the opportunity to all work together to share their gardening knowledge and life-skills. The Tokomairiro Urban Backyard Project is located at 17 Tokoiti Road. New volunteers are always welcome.

Tokomairiro Community HubThe Tokomairiro Community Hub is based in Milton. It’s a place where our community can come together and help, support and care for one another. There’s a variety of social, health and community services and projects operating out of the hub. These include Plunket, Project Bruce, Clutha Budget Advisory Service, Methodist Mission social support service and Stop Smoking support.

The hub holds a free market on Tuesdays, and food, children’s clothing and other useful resources are shared. Drop by for a cuppa and connect in with our local community.

Tokomairiro Community Recreation Centre Trust IncThe trust provides a safe and friendly environment for people to do their rehab and exercise in by offering the community a fully equipped gym suitable for rehabilitation and general fitness. In addition to continuing to operate, gaining sponsorship and fundraising the trust plans to make improvements to the gym equipment on offer. Local people can support the gym by becoming members of sponsoring the gym. They’d like to encourage people to use the gym to help grow membership. They also have the need for occasional volunteers to run some mornings.

Tokomairiro Rugby ClubToko Rugby has a proud tradition in Milton, and a handful of All Blacks and many representative players can trace their beginnings back to Grassroots Rugby played at their old stomping ground of Toko.
