PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Dear Parents & Students,

For many months Mrs Harvey has been awaiting the arrival of our 15 new bright red laptops (red laptops must operate quicker?). I would like to thank the fundraising from Year 6, 2017 that enabled the purchase of these devices.

Well done to our debating team who defeated Normanhurst PS last week in the first round of the Premier’s Debating Challenge. The topic was 'That we should only ever give feedback in primary schools instead of grades or marks'. Our team had the position of ‘the affirmative’. The debating team included Ruby W, Lily C, Alyssa T and Leon R as well as their proud coach, Miss Duncan.

As advised in the last newsletter a survey is still live through the school app . It is to request feedback on potential parent forums to be held at the school during 2018. The survey is to ascertain interest in providing information sessions on topics related to better understanding the curriculum, systems of support in the school, assisting with child wellbeing as well as parenting tips. We intend to source expertise from presenters internally and externally. We encourage you to reply before Thursday, 21 June. The survey can also be accessed via this link https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2X6H2QC

I wish to acknowledge the retirement of Mrs Anita Corney, Principal of Pennant Hills Public School. Over the years, Mrs Corney and I have maintained strong educational links between our schools.

We are three weeks away from the P&C Colour Explosion.

Enjoy the upcoming long weekend.

Aim High!

LABS DAY

Yet again the school was congratulated for its contribution

to the Hornsby Council Children’s Voices for

Reconciliation Ceremony. The smoking ceremony by

Elders is always popular at the gathering. Our students

read poetry related to National Reconciliation Week.

Included in this newsletter is poetry composed and

presented by our Years 3 & 4 students. Thank you to Miss

Higgins and the parents who accompanied our student

representatives to and from the ceremony.

Look at Big School (LaBS) Day was sensational. On a

damp day, the well-attended glimpse of the school

received a lot of positive feedback from new and existing

school parents. Our student performers amazed the

audience of future kindergarten children. We were

entertained by the training band, string ensemble, K-1

choir, junior and senior dance groups. These groups are

led by diligent teachers, conductors and parents. Mrs

Grimshaw is to be congratulated for organising the session

for the visitors. We are grateful to all parent helpers as well

as the generosity of the P&C for providing refreshments.

SCHOOL DISCOS

VOICES FOR RECONCILIATION

A very well attended set of discos proved popular with the

‘neon’ attired students and staff. The prefects are to be

commended for leading the event encouraging maximum

participation. The community also appreciates the diligent

teachers who prepared the hall and stayed at school

during the discos to support the students. Many thanks to

the parents who took the time to acknowledge the

teachers input through correspondence and face to face.

PARENT INFORMATION

Health Care Plans

It is important for parents to update the school of any health concerns relating to their child. This may include high risks eg (not limited to) anaphylaxis and asthma. The school should also be informed of non-life threatening food intolerances and allergies. Please provide this information to the school administrative staff.

This week the teaching and support staff completed a refresher course on responding to an emergency situation and performing CPR procedures. The course also included an anaphylaxis course developed by the NSW Anaphylaxis Education Program at The Children’s Hospital, Westmead.

Grandparents Day

The children and staff are looking forward to Grandparents Day. A reminder that it will start with the opening of the coffee shop and band performances at 10.30am, 12 June. Students will be dismissed for morning tea at 11am. Unlike previous years, the day will provide many opportunities for grandparents to see many features of a contemporary and future focused school as well as the always popular performances. Senior students will offer assistance to our visitors with finding the location of the many activities. Year 6 students have been diligently planning for their coffee shop. Coffee and tea is free for grandparents with cakes available to be purchased. Lunch will commence at approx. 12.40pm. All classrooms will be open for a visit by grandparents and other older significant figures in our students’ lives. Normal classes for the students will resume at 1.30pm. Please see the attached program.

A reminder this event is for grandparents and older significant figures. It is not for parents nor the general public. Open Day week 3, term 3 will enable the whole of our community to get a better glimpse of Normanhurst West PS.

PSSA Sport

Our school participates in the Beecroft Zone PSSA Friday sport competition. Mrs McKenzie coaches the two netball teams and Miss Georgiou coaches the two soccer teams. The students in these teams have enjoyed quite a few successful experiences, with many wins. We are very proud of their achievements and their continual sportsmanlike behaviour.

Flu Season Is Here!

Influenza is spread from person-to-person through the coughing or sneezing of infected people. Remind your child about these good hygiene practices to minimise the spread of infection:

-Anyone who is sick with influenza symptoms should stay home until their symptoms are gone.

-Cover the nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Throw the tissue in the garbage bin after use.

-Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.

-Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

If you or your child develops influenza-like illness, seek the advice of your family doctor as you would with any other illness.

The seasonal influenza vaccine, which protects against the pandemic influenza strain as well as two other influenza strains, is now available free to eligible people. More information about the vaccine is available from the NSW Health Immunisation Unit's vaccination page.

PARENT INFORMATION

P&C Colour Explosion The P&C is organising an inaugural ‘Colour Explosion’ to be held at the school as a fundraiser. It is scheduled for 27 June. The school is linking the event to the English, Creative Arts and PDHPE curriculums prior to the Football (Soccer) World Cup. During the lead up to the activity, the P&C encourages students to gain sponsorship with prize incentives. It is proposed that parents may watch the event for a gold coin donation. Book Parade in Term 3 In Term 3 Week 3, we will be having a Book Parade (exact day to be determined). Students are encouraged to come dressed as a book character, an author, or even a book! We have been talking in library lessons about choosing a character from a book they know (from school, home or elsewhere), as opposed to a TV or movie character. Children might like to carry the book (or printout of the cover or page) with them for the parade. Creativity is encouraged, rather than buying expensive costumes. Search on Pinterest or the internet for ‘easy book character costume’ ideas. The parade will be early in the day, so any hats/masks/large or delicate costume parts can be removed, leaving comfortable mufti clothes for the rest of the day. More details will follow closer to the time, including date and time, and some costume ideas. There are 8-9 weeks to help your child plan a simple costume for the big day. Mrs Harvey – Teacher Librarian Girls Knockout Basketball

On Wednesday 6th June, the Girls’ Knockout Basketball team played against Lane Cove P.S. It was a very tough match with both teams taking the lead at different times during the game. In the last 3 minutes, it could have gone either way. Our girls played with great determination and were very competitive throughout the game. Unfortunately, time was against us and Lane Cove scored a basket in the last 20 seconds of the game to make it 18-20. Mrs Georgiou and Miss Georgiou are extremely proud of this team and would like to thank everyone who has supported the girls throughout the competition. Shout out to Samantha N, Gemma H, Leah F, Ellen D, Keira B, Morgan W, Danielle P and Madelaine H for their grit and ferocity at training and the game.

NSW Basketball State Championships (Broken Hill)

Week 5: 28th - 30th May

I was lucky enough to get selected for the 'Sydney North Basketball Team', the Competition was held in Broken Hill over 3 days. There were 14 teams across NSW and the officials got to pick players who were good enough to play for NSW (State Team) in Darwin. Monday was the day we left on a train for 13hours. A couple of my team mates were on the train with me. Tuesday was the first day we would start the Competition. We played at least 3-4 games each day. Wednesday had the same timetable as Tuesday. On Thursday was the semi-finals and the announcing of the NSW Team. 4 players from the "Sydney North Team" were in the 'selection list', including myself, just below the State Team. We ended up winning 3 out of 7 games. It was a very hard and competitive Competition. It was a great experience.

PARENT INFORMATION

3MC have been working on Point of View Poetry as part of our English unit: Changes

and Point of View. Students have been identifying the character’s point of view in a

text and how a text can be changed through representing the story from an alternative

point of view. These poems are from the point of view of the house.

Voices for Reconciliation Poetry

8

They had hearts of stone

They took your land and drove you away

Thinking it was right

But it was wrong

They stole your children

And took them away

To unknown places far far away

They missed you and you missed them

But that is all over now

Let’s acknowledge the past

And think about the future

To move forward in peace and harmony

As we look onward

We become better friends

We are many different cultures holding

hands

And as equals we will make a better fu-

ture

O. Widdup,

Share the Love

Will S

Let’s walk hand in hand across this land

And see our different perspectives.

We know you’ve been deeply hurt

Now we’re saying our sorries.

Like a home after a storm

All shattered, broken and torn,

We need to come together

Use our friendship to rebuild this house.

It is time to remember

To share the land

Share the love

Share our community.

Bring healing and hope.

I write this poem to warm your heart

And hopefully to do my part.

Let’s come together and say our sorries.

Let’s come together and rewrite this story.

Many years ago they invaded your land

And took away your children

It was very very sad

It was extremely wrong

Into the future we look

I hope that our nation

Will soon be one culture

No racism, no discrimination.

I hope there will be a great future for all

Into the future we look

One day we should all hold hands

And dance with each other

So we can learn to trust and accept

In hope that we can all be equals

Into the future we look

With all cultures combined

Under all our flags

We can live in peace and harmony

Together we will strengthen the bond

Between people near and far

Into the future we look

United Australians

In the past they treated you unequally,

They stole your generations.

They taught them a different language,

they didn’t know you were so diverse

Now today we want to be friends

And live in peace and harmony,

Celebrate all Indigenous Australians

And recognise what they did wrong,

They dishonoured you.

Now we know we want to come together

And treat you equally,

We want to be united Australians.

E. Tutty

Let’s Rebuild

By A. Zreika

Let’s ignore our differences and look at

what’s the same.

Let’s walk and talk and learn each other’s

name.

Like one big family holding up the love.

We’re one big nation no matter where we’re

from.

So, let’s build up our land and make it clear

And, in our hearts, let’s persevere.

Let’s hold our hands and never let go.

Let’s rebuild the love so our country can

grow.

Friends

A story is boring told to one,

Share the story together.

A dance is boring performed to one,

Share the dance together.

A culture, tradition, a way of life is something that

is shown,

Together we shall unite over everything we know.

Together in peace we walk hand in hand,

Together in unity we share this land

Like flowers we are unique, blossoming forever

Like flowers we look prettier when we are

together

ABORIGINAL OR NOT WE ARE ALL EQUAL

Our nation is one and we shall unite

United by day, united by night

Together now and for future generations

Reconciliation

Victor G

For all your fear, and for all your sadness, we

will now hold hands and peace and we will

now respect you.

Together we will have reconciliation.

Through all the generations, we have stolen

your nations.

We now know that it was wrong, but we will

continue to make it right.

Together, we will now hold hands in peace

and harmony.

QUIET

It was quiet, too quiet

They didn’t mean this

It is their fault

They took your land

You were brave

It was a mistake

So let‘s pull this together

And let’s all be mates.

Daniel C.

We know what happened in the past was

wrong. When they stole your loved ones they

thought it was right.

They made your families incomplete, your

generations were stolen.

They put them in English schools and forbid

them to speak their languages.

On this day we can hold hands and reflect on

what they did wrong. But now looking to-

wards the future we can reconcile and be

friends.

L. Ryan

They took your land

They came to stay

They took your children far away

It was wrong they took your land and home

away

They separated your families

We are sad to say

They should not have done that

They destroyed everything

They thought they were better

It was a mistake

M. Chiswick

We say sorry

We know our past was wrong

To be friends we have longed

Now we feel contrite

After our shameful fight

They took your children

And laid low your descendants

We reflect our past

So that this great nation would last

You have protested in one voice

In recognition of their choice

Now the past is behind and the future ahead

After all the words of concern have been said

We aim to let go of the old

So we can let the good unfold

B. Wu

Colonies spread,

You all fled,

They made your life,

Such a dread,

They claimed this land,

In which now, we stand,

They took your children that you cherished,

They took your land that slowly perished,

Repentive about the past,

We have come together at last,

The work has just begun,

At last, the nation is one,

The colours of hands do not matter,

Because all our hands have come together,

Now our country will be better
