Greetings everyone,
It feels as though it has been a while since I have reached out to everyone, so I am anxious and excited to bring you up to speed on what is going on at CLC!
You may recall that we began our fiscal year last October facing a 6% reduction in our funding. For CLC this represented approximately $180,000. Facing those kinds of reductions was challenging because we never want to affect the health, safety and social lives of our residents. In addition to the 6% cut to the overall funding we also received cuts to our transportation budgets and a number of our independent residents lost their MORC services because they were unable to meet their monthly Medicaid spend downs. This means that MORC is no longer able to reimburse CLC to provide residents with staff, so residents have to privately pay for any services or supports that they receive from us.
In order to be as fiscally responsible as possible, we did all we could to be proactive in our stewardship. Some of the steps we took included extending the lease on all of our vans in order to lower payments, closing our home in Ferndale to save on overtime yet still maintain the current staff within the organization, grow our community based program which provides services and support to local families, maintaining a wage freeze for staff, and hosting our most successful Celebrity Chef Dinner to date, grossing over $61,000.
Being frugal didn’t stop us from having fun, though! CLC staff and residents attended many Detroit Tigers games, and even made the Detroit Tigers the theme of a hugely successful and fun annual Dinner Dance. Most of the residents vacationed throughout our beautiful State of Michigan, a number of houses hosted BBQ parties over the summer where an occasional water balloon was seen flying through the air, and soon four of our residents will be going to Walt Disney World with the Skedaddle Travel club.
Going forward, my goals for next year will be to continue to watch our budgets, monitor overtime, provide staff with training and support to do the best job that they can, and ensure that all of the residents and people we support are receiving the best care possible and experiencing the finest that life has to offer. We continue to rely on your support in order to be successful. If you have not had the opportunity to respond to my letters requesting a donation, I hope

It is with deep sadness that we said good bye to our dear friend and fellow staff member Ann Gorup on September 22nd. Ann began working for CLC in 1995 at House I. Over the past 20 years, she has worked at Code Road, Magnolia, Portsmouth and Wagner homes. Not only did she fill the roles of direct care worker, Medical Coordinator, and handyman at each home, she was a friend, sister, mother and pal to each of the residents. Ann had an incredibly close bond with all of the residents that she worked with and they all deeply miss her. A day has not passed without someone mentioning her name or saying “I wish Ann were here – she would know what to do.”
Ann’s favorite hobby inside and outside of work was socializing; she had a great group of friends and enjoyed being with them. When she wasn’t at work, she was always doing something for someone. Ann was a constant support to her friends, particularly when it came to their children. So many of Ann’s friends called on her to be “Aunt Ann” and babysit for them so they could either go to work, just take a break or have their own date night. She was always happy to do it and loved the kids as much as they loved her. In the last couple of years Ann lived with her brother and her dog Spanky. Both of them, like so many people who knew Ann, relied and depended on her. Ann is missed.

Kudos and Thanks to our
2015 Community Partners!
Pamela M. has been with Community Living Centers since 2000. She is very social in her home, she likes to laugh and has a big heart! She enjoys spending time with her roommate Michelle, shopping, sharing meals and enjoying one another’s company.
Pam enjoys watching TV— she really likes police and crime shows — and talking on the phone. She practices her independence by walking to the corner store to shop. On the weekends, she goes out into the community and shops or gets pizza — her favorite food — with her roommate and other residents. She also enjoys relaxing in her home when she is not working or participating in group activities.
Pam is a proud aunt! She grew up babysitting and continues to enjoy spending time with the kids. She has a new nephew on the way around New Years and is so excited to welcome him when he arrives! She has a twin sister who lives in Phoenix and has enjoyed visiting her on occasion. Pam frequently shares pictures of her loved ones, and is very involved with and proud of her family.

Let your heart be seen in your actions today… We have had some incredible volunteers contribute their time, talent and treasure to CLC in 2015! Every spring and fall, the Volunteer Corps from the Ford Motor Company visits all 11 of our group homes to garden and landscape, giving our residents renewed pride and joy in their homes. In June of this year, the Volunteer Corps painted the CLC offices, and for Accelerated Action Day they installed new flooring at Magnolia House. In September, Mercedes-Benz Financial Services sent a crew of 75 volunteers to share a Week of Caring with CLC! They installed new flooring, landscaped and painted at Wagner House, and hung new curtains at Magnolia House. Also in September, Johnson Controls, Inc. brought a crew out to rebuild a walkway and deck, landscape and deep clean at one of our independent resident’s homes, and deep cleaned another resident’s apartment. What a difference!
THANK YOU to all of our volunteers!
Please welcome Emily Karlichek, our new Marketing & Development Manager! Emily joined
CLC in November, and will be managing marketing, community engagement, fundraising,
volunteers, events and more. In the past, Emily has worked as a Community Manager for the
American Cancer Society in Relay For Life, Executive Director of the Sherman County
Museum in Moro, Oregon and as a retail store manager for several years. She completed her
Bachelor of Arts degree at Western Michigan University, where she met her husband Mark.
They have one son, Killian , who is almost one and a half and is a happy, healthy, curious,
adventurous little boy!
Do you have an idea for a fundraiser? Know an individual or business who may be interested
in partnering with us, perhaps as a sponsor for our Celebrity Chefs Dinner? Please reach out to Emily and let her know! We
want to grow our community presence and relationships as much as possible. Emily can be reached at 248-478-0870 or via
