Can I offer you a lift? I’m heading that way anyway. Comeon, hop in. All set? Comfy? Buckled? Great.

Yeah, it’s rough out there. It’s nice when you have a com-fortable car to ride in, out of the heat or the cold or the rain. What’s that blue butterfly on my rearview mirror? It’s funnyyou should ask. There’s a great story behind that.

One day, I had taken my girls to the doctor, probably forwell-visits, or more likely for shots, since those are generallyMY responsibility. After behaving well, my daughters, thenabout two and a half and four and a half respectively, receiveda number of stickers.

While showing each other the various ones they had anddiscussing trading, my little one picked up a pretty blue but-terfly and declared, “Daddy should get a sticker!” She handedit forward, and I affixed it to my mirror. I knew that way shewould see me “use” it, and I could remove it more easily thanI could from the dashboard.

But I never did remove it. Every time I look at it, I see thatsweet little girl, overflowing with love and generosity, feelingthat Daddy is good enough and loved enough that he de-serves to have a sticker and she’s going to make sure he getsit.

Sometimes, when she’s driving me crazy, or when she mis-behaves, I’ll look at the sticker and start to calm down. Ittakes me back and reminds me that deep down, she’s gen-uinely loving, caring, and generous.

Recently, that little sticker gave me an insight into a famousphrase. Yirmiyahu (2:2) tells us that HaShem says, “I remem-ber the kindness of your youth, the love of when you were abride, when you followed Me in the desert, in a land that wasnot sown.”

Let’s think about that. What does it help to remember thatsomeone USED to be good to you, when now they’re rotten?HaShem remembers us when we were devoted to him, andtherefore takes us back even after we’ve betrayed Him. Howdoes that work?

Before I explain, let me tell you another story. One day, mywife called me very upset. My daughter had balked at eatingsome sort of green vegetable which was served for dinnerand simply refused to taste it. The situation devolved intoboth parties getting upset. When my wife told me about it, Istarted laughing.

Astounded at my insensitivity to her frustration, my wifeasked me what exactly I found so funny. I paused, then said, wistfully, “We’re back to corn and sweet potatoes,” referenc-ing the only baby food we had been able to get our belovedbaby girl to eat when she was an infant. Not peas, not greenbeans, nothing green – just the small orange jars of corn andsweet potatoes. My wife’s heart melted and she couldn’t bemad at her baby anymore. It wasn’t her fault; this was howshe was made from the beginning!

Just like my sticker, it reminded us of what lie inside of ourdaughter in her youngest years, and that it still existed insideher today. And that’s the message of the posuk.

HaShem says, “I remember when you were enamored withMe; when you clamored to be close to Me. I know thatthough we’ve been driven far apart, that desire of your youthstill resides within you and can resurface with great force.”Even though we think we’ve changed permanently, deepdown, He knows we really haven’t.

I like to think that it has broader applications too. Remem-ber when you were young and idealistic? When you thoughtyou could change the world and were willing to give your all

sxcto make things happen? Rememberwhen you found joy in the simplethings in life, and you weren’t con-cerned about “stuff ” or jealous of oth-ers? You might have to go way backto when you were a toddler - whenplaying with a big box and your imagi-nation could be an all-day event.

Think about the people in your lifewho give you a hard time, or makethings difficult for you. Maybe it’s aparent or grandparent who needs care, and you’re feeling resentful. Maybe it’sa spouse who you feel was nasty or in-sensitive to you. Go back to when thatperson made your life sweet, or whenthey were caring and good, and see ifyou can bring back some of the goodfeelings and be forgiving.

See, what I’ve realized is that it’s nottoo late to look back and see that innerchild, the one who was so sweet and in-nocent. It’s not too late to bring backthe kid who was so proud to read theAleph-Bais or recite a Dvar Torah helearned in school. You can still find thelittle girl who shared so nicely and washappy when someone else got some-thing she liked; who wasn’t jaded orcynical.

So, that’s why I keep that sticker there,

to remind me that all our potential isn’tjust in the rearview mirror, it still liesahead of us, as long as we keep it in oursights. That doesn’t only go for us, butfor everyone – HaShem said so.

Well, I’m stopping here, but at leastyou’re a little closer to your destinationnow. Safe travels, and just keep takingthis road straight ahead. You’ll getwhere you want to get; I’m sure of it.

“And HASHEM said to Moshe and Aharon, ‘Because youdid not believe in Me to sanctify Me in the eyes of the chil-dren of Israel, therefore, you will not bring this congrega-tion to the land that I have given them.’” — Bamidbar 20:12

For almost forty years while the Jews were traveling in thedesert, their source of water was the be’er, a large rock thatprovided the water they needed to survive. The Jewish na-tion then consisted of about three million people. They hadalso taken many animals with them when they went out ofMitzrayim, so they required millions of gallons of watereach day. The be’er provided all they needed and more.

When Miriam died, the rock disappeared, and the Klal Yis-roel recognized that their survival was in jeopardy.HASHEM told Moshe Rabbeinu to go out into the desert, speak to the rock, and bring the water back. When Mosheand Aharon went to the rock, they spoke to it and receivedno response. Moshe then assumed that just as it was neces-sary to hit the rock when the Jews first went out into thedesert, so too now. When he hit the rock, it began pouringforth water.

Later, HASHEM told Moshe and Aaron that they haderred. HASHEM told them to speak to the rock, and it wasthrough the power of speech that the miracle was to comeabout. On some level, they were lacking in their trust inHASHEM, and this caused them to miscalculate. Had theybeen more complete in their trust, they would have usedwords alone, and the rock would have provided the water.

Rashi tells us that because of this mistake, the Jewish peo-ple lost out on a great lesson. Had Moshe only spoken tothe rock, the Jews would have said to themselves, “A rockdoesn’t require sustenance, yet it listens to the word ofHASHEM; surely, we, who rely on HASHEM for parnassa, must listen to Him.” However, since Moshe hit the rock in-stead of speaking to it, that lesson was lost.

Rashi seems to be saying that if Moshe had spoken to therock, the Jewish people would have increased their level ofservice to HASHEM. They would have realized that theirlivelihood was dependent upon their doing mitzvahs, andthis would have added focus and precision in the way thatthey fulfilled them.

There are two problems with understanding this Rashi. One is that the Gemara tells us that the reward for mitzvahsis not in this world. While it is true that HASHEM rewardsevery good a person does, the place of that reward is in theWorld to Come. In fact, it is considered a curse to use upyour payment in this world – something that is reserved forwicked people. So it doesn’t seem to be correct that theirlivelihood was dependent upon listening to HASHEM.

The second problem with this Rashi is that any motiva-tional system must be tailored to fit the audience. The peo-ple of this generation received the Torah on Har Sinai. Theyspent almost forty years surrounded by the Clouds of Glory, completely immersed in Torah study, and sustained by themon. They were on the highest madreigah of any generation

EARNING A LIVING DOESN’T HAVE TO BE DIFFICULT

Parshas ChukasR’ Ben Tzion Shafier-The Shmuz

in history. So even if their parnassa was dependent upontheir listening, how would they be motivated by somethingso mundane as earning their daily bread?

The answer to this question is based on understandingthe Rambam (in Hilchos Tshuvah, Perek 9). He explainsthat even though we don’t receive reward for doing mitz-vahs in this world, if a person keeps the Torah properly, then HASHEM will remove all of the obstacles that nor-mally prevent a person from keeping the mitzvahs. Sick-ness, war, poverty, and hunger prevent a person fromlearning or fulfilling the mitzvahs. If a person is happy anddedicates himself to keeping the Torah, HASHEM willshower him with all of the requirements to better serveHim, including peace, tranquility, well-being, sustenance, and all else that a person needs to follow the Torah.

The Rambam is telling us that since HASHEM createdthe world in order to have man follow the Torah, when aperson uses the world properly, then HASHEM allows himto have his needs met in this world without strain. This willhelp him better serve HASHEM.

HASHEM was telling Moshe and Aharon that this lessonwould have greatly affected the generation of the desert, but it was lost. Had the people seen the rock obeyingHASHEM’s command, they would have been moved to apowerful realization: “The rock doesn’t have needs, yet itlistens to HASHEM. How much more so should we, whohave so many needs? HASHEM has promised that if wefollow in his ways, He will remove all obstacles from ourpath. But if we don’t listen. . .”

That was a lesson that would have affected even this gen-eration because their very survival depended on it. Whilepeople may have many lofty motives, one of our strongestdrives is self-preservation. Had that generation come to a

more clear recognition that their existence was dependentupon keeping the Torah, it would have changed even theirappreciation — but it was a lesson lost.

The concept that HASHEM takes care of our needswhen we use our lives properly can be a great source ofmotivation. Earning a living isn’t easy. Market economiesrise and fall. Entire industries come and go. Careers thatare in high demand in one decade are outsourced and sentoverseas the next. Financial security in an ever-changingworld is fragile at best.

While our main motivation to keep the Torah is thatHASHEM commanded us to do it for our benefit in theWorld to Come, the reality is that we live in this world. Wehave bills to pay, children to put through school, and many, many financial obligations. Knowing that HASHEM willremove the obstacles standing in our way, as long as wededicate ourselves to passionately keeping the Torah, canbe a great impetus to growth.

This is not to say that life will be a bed of roses. Therewill still be nisyonos, life tests and different settings that weneed for various reasons. However, the basic starting posi-tion is that HASHEM will take care of my needs so that Ican better serve Him. That understanding can aid us tofocus on our true purpose in this world and allow us amuch greater degree of success in all of our endeavors.

… on gratitudeBegin by removing the “they owe me” attitude. Tell yourselfagain and again, until you truly believe it, “No one owes meanything.” That includes, but isn’t limited to, your spouse, parents, children and neighbors.

… on Kavana in davening As you begin each pasuk or even each line or phrase, think

BRIEFLY about the first letter. Mentally determine its gema-triah, consider its sound or just name the letter itself. Anyvariation can work; the point is to get your brain to think.Try it and you will be amazed.

…on shmiras haloshon Start off by davening. At the end of every Shemoneh Esreiwe ask HaShem to guard our tongue from speaking evil.Pause a moment and be sure to focus when you say it. Thereis also a beautiful prayer composed by the Chofetz Chaimwhich says it all. Keep in mind that regrettably, speakingloshon hora without doing proper teshuva greatly weakensthe power of our tefillos; it actually damages our tongue.

The Sifri (Devarim 34:10) comments that among the JewishPeople there will not be a prophet of equal stature withMoshe. Among the gentiles, however, there was Bilaam. Thisimplies that Moshe and Bilaam had a comparable spiritual ca-pacity. Moshe was the humblest of people, a kind teacher, leader and advocate of the Jewish people. Bilaam was greedy, arrogant, cruel and a wicked sorcerer. How can we comparethem?

Kabbalah describes three primary cognitive faculties in thehuman being:Chochmah/Wisdom,Bina/Understandingand Daas/Knowledge.

Chochmah is thespace for conceptionof new ideas. It holdsthe creative mind andreleases our epipha-nies. ThroughChochmah we receivethe spark of an ideafrom the super-con-scious, but it is notfully developed. Yet,from this flash of in-sight we know that wehave found an answerthat we have beenseeking and must pur-sue.

Bina is the next stageof the cognitiveprocess and it receivesthe new idea fromChochmah. Only inBina is an idea fullydeveloped from a sin-gle point to an ex-panded set of details. From the initial flashof insight, a completethought is built withall of its applicationsand ramifications.

Daas is the path of a complete thought from the intellectinto the emotions. After information has been processed, ourDaas brings it to heart. Through Daas, ideas become real tous, and we begin to feel them emotionally and can implementthem into reality. Daas creates an intimate connection be-tween us and another entity, concept or being; it’s a very deepand powerful bond, a driving force.

The Torah tells us “The man [Adam] knew his wife Eveand she conceived and bore Cain…” (Bereshis 4:1) TheDaas/Knowledge of Adam and Eve was their intimacy. Theywere fully united as one being and their souls connected onthe highest planes, they were now truly a pair who knew andfelt each other mentally, emotionally and physically. Their re-lationship became real and fully manifest in their lives.

G-d desires only what is good and holy, however, for freewill to be real to us, both sides must exist. Therefore, for

every positive and holyforce in G-d’s creation, there is an equal butopposing negative andunholy force. So, forChochmah, Bina andDaas, as with the otherdivine attributes, thereare both holy and un-holy sides.

The Kabbalists ex-plain that Moshe andBilaam were both em-bodiments of the di-vine attribute ofDaas/Knowledg e.Moshe was a force ofDaas ShelK e d u s h a / H o l yKnowledge and Bal-aam was the equal butopposing force ofDaas Shel Klipah/Un-holy Knowledge.

(In many places, welearn how Moshe isconnected to the at-tribute Netzach/Vic-tory. Still, Moshe isalso a facet of Daas, asour perception of asoul depends on theperspective. Similarly,we usually find Avra-ham associated with

Chesed/Kindness, however he is often also associated withChochmah/Wisdom.)

In us, the Holy Daas represented by Moshe is our sensitivityto identifying with holiness. With holy Daas, we extract fromour own spiritual ideas and information the energy and ex-citement for doing mitzvos, serving G-d and making theworld into a better and holier place. When we feel a desire

and are drawn to materialistic, mundane or unholy things andpleasures, we are exhibiting Balaam’s quality of unholy Daas.

Our Daas feeds perspective on the information which we pos-sess. If we have an epiphany, learn something new from a bookor a teacher, experience an unusual event, or see a person behav-ing in an unexpected way, how will this new information playinto our own lives? Whether it’s consciously or unconsciouslyapplied, our Daas will determine our reaction and feelings, andultimately, motivate our actions.

Through holy Daas, we will dig deep and find holiness in everyperson or experience, even if it’s deeply buried under many layersof questionable integrity. With unholy Daas one can easily detectand harbor on the slightest negativity or insincerity, gravitate toit, expose it, and spoil any goodness that was there.

Since Adam committed the sin of eating from the Tree ofKnowledge of Good and Evil, everything in the world has beenis a mixture of good and bad. With the exception of a few loftyand righteous souls, Tzadikim, every person’s actions (or moti-vations) also contain both positive and negative elements. Thereisn’t any good that doesn’t have a little bad mixed in, and thereis not any evil which is without a kernel of goodness.

If we examine our own genuine and spiritual acts, we may findour own inappropriate motives. Perhaps deep down, we enjoyhonor and fame, and study Torah for this reason, even if it’s onlya miniscule personal pleasure. In shul, we might shuckle and swaywith great enthusiasm, hoping someone else will notice. Isn’t itconceivable that some of us like to see our names on a building,or in a news photo?

Of course, nobody is perfect. Pure tzaddikim are rare individ-uals, spread sparsely throughout the generations. Our job isn’tto completely eliminate every kernel of evil within ourselves –that’s practically impossible. Our job is to serve Hashem andfight the unholy, to stifle and restrain it and prevent it from man-

ifesting in our lives in a real way. We cannot eradicate it, but wecan do our best to control it and keep it in check. As explainedin the book of Tanya, that is what expected from us. So, for mostpeople, when we are involved in a good and holy deed, even ifit’s likely that there is some tinge of personal gain involved, it’salso probable that we are involved mostly for good reasons.

When someone is truly acting ostentatiously or pretentiously,we don’t need a complex Daas to detect it, it’s usually quite ob-vious to everyone that observes. The true power of Daas is toextract a deep reaction from even an ordinary thing, idea orevent.

When we study another person’s actions and dig up an innermotive, the true nature of our Daas is revealed.

Bilaam had the ultimate unholy Daas; he was able to smell arat from a mile away. He had a knack for spotting insincerity. Asthe adage says, “It takes one to know one.” Bilaam was so evil athis core that it was easy for him to spot even the tiniest indiscre-tion. Whenever there was a possibility of anything insincere orunholy, he could find that single speck and disregard all of thegoodness that came along with it.

Whom was he was trying to curse? This was a generation ofJews that grew up and learned Torah with Moshe. They had beeneating Manna and drinking from Miriam’s well. They were Tzad-dikim of the highest caliber! When Balaam came to slander them,he couldn’t slander them directly, because he knew there wasnothing overtly negative to say, even the last traces of the sin ofthe golden calf had been obliterated.

His keen eye spotted one test they would fail. This generationhad a deeply rooted, almost hidden problem. In Egypt for 210years, the Jews were steeped in hedonistic living and immorality.Although they had since stood at Sinai and purified themselvescompletely, Bilaam perceived that unaware even to them was stilla minuscule appreciation for the immoral Egyptian lifestyle. test sought to expose it. It took Balaam’s astute Daas to draw itout.

Moshe’s holy Daas results in the exact opposite. When Moshesaw another human being, even one who was involved in des-picable things, he only perceived the goodness in the experience.Moshe knew and realized that we are all ultimately driven by aspiritual desire, even if it manifests in a backwards or sinful way.We might be quick to judge another person based on their be-haviors and attitudes, but Moshe saw past all of that and sawevery person’s inner spiritual drive and goodness.

Bilaam’s goal, like many of his ilk before and after his time, was to empower evil. Through his power of unholy Daas, hewanted to belittle the Jewish people in Hashem’s eyes. If G-d isangry with His children, He turns His back to the world. Whenthe Jewish people are in exile, G-d lovingly awaits their returnto Him, and indiscriminately continues to throw life at the worlduntil He can favor them once more, He must not pay attention. If G-d would be exacting in His life-force during these times, the Jewish people may not bode well, therefore He ‘blindly’ sus-tains all life. Similar to what Haman tried to accomplish, Bilaamwas looking to access G-d’s ‘blind’ light, which he would directand use to his own evil devices.

The Jewish people have enough enemies and accusers in thisworld. We should never engage in unholy Daas. We must onlysee the inherent good in others and the world around us. By cel-ebrating each other’s strengths and always highlighting the bestin others and our environment, we can supercharge our emo-tions with spirituality. We can be like Moshe, the ultimate advo-cate of the Jewish people, who with his good eye and holy Daas, brought us to the ultimate heights. Through this we can imple-ment G-d’s will for a time when “…the world will be filled withthe knowledge of Hashem…” (Isaiah 11:9), very soon, whenall evil will be eradicated from the world, and we will all be inJerusalem, with Moshiach and the holy Third Temple.•

Do exclusively nursing babies need water?

As the weather gets warmer and mothers and babies beginto spend more time outdoors, nursing mothers always won-der whether they need to supplement their babies’ liquid in-take with water. The answer to this question is no! Amother’s milk contains 88% water and breastmilk is perfectlyformulated to keep babies hydrated no matter what theweather or ambient temperature is. A nursing mother whoherself is well-hydrated, and is allowing her baby to breast-feed as often as the baby desires, will stay perfectly hydrated,no matter how hot the weather becomes. A number of stud-ies have been done in various locations—both humid and dryand at temperatures ranging from 22-41°C (71.6-105.8°F)with 90-96% relative humidity. Results from these studiesrevealed that exclusively nursing babies do not need to begiven supplements of water. It’s important to know thatgiving water to a nursing baby five months of age andyounger is actually dangerous. It is important to know thattoo much water can dilute the sodium in the baby's blood-stream to the point where "oral water intoxication" develops.Oral water intoxication can lead to symptoms like low bodytemperature, bloating, and seizures. Nursing babies that havereached the six month mark also do not need water, but it isnot harmful if they do occasionally sip water from a cup.

Although nursing babies do not need any supplementalwater, it is interesting to note that formula fed babies some-times do require some water. Due to the higher salt level

found in some formulas, extra water might be needed inorder to excrete it from the kidneys, where it might otherwiseremain. Formula fed babies also have less efficientmetabolisms than nursed babies, so they use up water faster;as the body uses it in the processing of the formula.

When should I begin introducing solid food to my

nursing baby?

It’s important to know that a mother’s milk changes as thechild grows; keeping up with the nutritional needs of thebaby. So, your milk is as nutritious for a ten month old as itwas for a two week old. Therefore, nursing babies generallydon’t need to eat solids until they have from four to eightteeth or until they can sit up, support themselves in a highchair and manage, by themselves,to get more food into theirmouths than they do in their hair or on the floor. This exactage varies greatly from family to family and from child tochild. But don’t confuse the need for oral discovery withhunger. Babies become very orally excited between the agesof five to nine months old. As strange as it is, all humans intheir first year of life discover the world through theirmouths. When they begin to wiggle, creep and crawl along—sweepingthe floors clean with their bodies, they begin tastingEVERYTHING. For a baby, a piece of newspaper is a del-icacy, a dust bunny a delight and sticky leftover food drop-pings a hidden treasure. It is important to note in this case, that the baby does not need to fill his tummy with solids orliquids rather it’s more about discovery and the oral sensation. If a baby is nursing well, not getting sick, and is happy, thenthink of food as a science project rather than a ‘requirement.’When the time is right, let them explore the world of taste, texture and smell by allowing them to play and mush foodsof all kinds. Give them foods with different colors and tex-tures to play with. Think quality, by letting their scientificminds develop, rather than just pushing quantities of foodinto their little tummies, that most babies really don’t require.

What is Livescan Fingerprinting?Livescan is an inkless fingerprinting process where

fingerprints are electronically transmitted to the Department of Justice for background screening. Ink fingerprinting is still required in many states. However, as a result of legislation passed in 1997, the California Department of Justice (CA-DOJ)

has developed the automated background check process, which requires Livescan fingerprints for criminal history

background checks that may be required as a condition ofemployment. Livescan technology replaces the ink processof recording fingerprint images. The CA-DOJ may also for-

ward Livescan fingerprints to the FBI if required.

Who Needs Livescan?Livescan may be required as a condition of employment

for: Teachers, Care Givers, Contractors, Security Guards,Nurses, Doctors, Surgeons, Real Estate Licensees,

Appraisers, Notaries, DMV Licensed Professionals, Foster Parents, Stock Brokers, Volunteers, and anyone

applying for a professional licensing, certification, or permit. Persons applying for foreign adoptions

or VISA/Immigration clearances may also needLivescan processing.
