In his homily at the 2014 Easter Vigil, Pope Francis spoke the following words…. “The Gospel of Easter is very clear: we need to go back there, to see Jesus risen, and to become witnesses of his Resurrection. This is not to go back in time; it is not a kind of nostalgia. It is returning to our first love, in order to receive the fire which Jesus has kindled in the world and to bring that fire to all people, to the very ends of the earth." Clearly, the Holy Father doesn’t see the Resurrection of Jesus as an event relegated to the past. Neither does he view the Resurrection as one mystery among many mysteries of God’s action in the world. Not at all. Rather, the Resurrection of Christ is the decisive moment of our salvation. And what’s more, the rising of Jesus from death to life is something that is intended to take place in our own lives—and not simply after our mortal lives have ended. How many deaths have you been through since last Easter? The death might have been the loss of a loved one. Maybe it was the loss of trust in someone after a serious betrayal. Or, it could have been a job or health loss. Or maybe, it’s the loss of a sense of connection with the Church and the people who serve within it. Whatever deaths we have experienced since last Easter, every year we are called upon to look at them in light of the Resurrection. Every year we are called to ask the question, “How has God redeemed our losses? How is God transforming these smaller deaths into greater faith, hope and love in our lives?” Turns out, Resurrection is not simply something left behind in history books. Rather, it is something brand new in the here and now. It is meant to be ongoing and dynamic in our own lives. The power of God raising Jesus from death to new life is a power that is ongoing in every generation. I hope you are finding this new power, this new hope, this new joy in your lives. May it grow within your heart, and inspire you to serve as living witnesses of that first Easter.

The Worship Department would like to welcome all of our parishioners and everyone new to the parish. We wish you a blessed Easter season. We would like to invite you to participate in all of our liturgical ministries. Your help is always needed for the ministries at our Masses. Our wonderful liturgies are not possible without your help. To serve the number of people that we do at our Masses, we need your participation. Everyone is worthy in these ministries. We presently have a need for Gift Bearers at the 10:30 a.m. Mass, Servers at the 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Masses, and Ushers, Lectors, Announcers and Eucharistic Ministers at all the Masses. We realize that everyone has a busy schedule. Training times can be scheduled based on your time frame along with large group training sessions. Ushers can be trained at Mass. The main responsibilities of an usher are that you help the handicapped and take up the collection. Gift Bearers can also be trained at Mass. Our parish thrives because of you the parishioners. With your help, we will be able to keep all of our liturgical ministries growing. First Eucharist Celebration, Session I, will take place on

First Reading—Acts 5:12-16: In the Acts of the Apostles, we hear Luke’s account of the early days of the Church after encountering the risen Christ. In this passage, there is a general state of harmony, healing and growth in the communities of Christians. The apostles attracted many people because of their healing powers for the sick and those troubled by disturbing spirits. Many became believers and followers of Jesus Christ. Second Reading—Revelation 1:9-11a, 12-13,17-19: The book of Revelation, written by John, is chocked full of unusual, even bizarre images and tells of Christ’s victory and that of those who are faithful to his promises. John is in exile on the island of Patmos because he has proclaimed Christ’s teachings to all. Here he shares a vision he has on the “Lord’s Day” during which he is commanded to write down what he sees. He sees the glorified Christ dressed royally and proclaiming he is the “first and the last” and the one who has all authority. Gospel— John 20:19-31: The disciples were behind locked doors because they were afraid they would be harmed by those who had crucified Christ. Jesus appears to them and gives them a typical Jewish greeting, “Peace be with you.” He shows them the wounds of his crucifixion, breathes on them and commissions them to forgive sins. When those present told Thomas of their encounter, he didn’t believe them. He was unable to believe on his own; he had to see for himself. A week later, Christ appears and Thomas is present and immediately believes. Jesus then says, “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” We are like Thomas after the first appearance—we haven’t seen but are expected to believe on the testimony of others. We pray that our faith enables us to live lives following Christ.

St. Vincent de Paul Truck Drive— Next Weekend, April 27/28

Parishioners can donate used items at the spring St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP) Truck Drive April 27/28 before and after all Masses. SVDP will accept small appliances, household decorations, jewelry, kitchen utensils, paper goods, sporting goods, bikes and toys, shoes, books, dishes/pots/pans, sheets & blankets, baby products as well as clean, useable clothing. Look for the truck on our parking lot. For larger items, please call 513-421-2273 to schedule a free pick up by SVDP.

A Call for Help! Good Shepherd’s Psalm 23 Ministry voted to donate $10,000 to Catholic Charities USA in support of the many victims of the recent flooding in the Midwest affecting people in many states. Good Shepherd parishioners can add to this total by writing checks to Good Shepherd with “Catholic Charities USA” or “flooding” on the memo line. On March 19, the following statement was issued by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops:

U.S. Bishops’ Chairman Offers Prayers for Recovery, After Flooding in the Midwest

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and the damage caused by the flooding throughout the Midwest these past few days. As of this writing, at least nine million people in fourteen states have been affected by rising water levels along rivers and creeks in the central United States. Four people have been killed by swift currents and rising floodwaters. Heavy rainfall and melting snow from this winter’s powerful storms continue to threaten the lives and livelihoods of many as the flood-waters are not expected to recede until later this week. It is our prayer that those affected by the floods will find the strength to rebuild. We trust that the Lord will console them in their suffering. Let us answer the Lord’s call to love one another and generously support our neighbors in this time of need.” Donations can also be made to Catholic Charities USA at https://catholiccharitiesusa.org. Summer Help Needed Good Shepherd is looking to hire two full-time people to work outside over the summer months (May-August). Applicants must be 18 years of age or older. The job duties include mowing, watering and weeding the church grounds. The Special Projects Fund In 2013, we hired an outside agency to evaluate our building maintenance needs. The report stated that we would need approximately $1.6 million over the next ten years to maintain the building. This equates to $160,000 annually. In 2014, when we paid off the parish debt, the plan was to use debt-free savings for this purpose. The amount of our debt-free savings was $130,000. Also, the Finance Commission supported the addition of the Special Projects envelope in the monthly packet (2015) to make up the $30,000 shortfall. Below is a complete list of all the projects we’ve been able to accomplish using the money from the fund: A new roof over the cry room, kitchen, and partial atrium New Audio-Visual system in the church Roof replacements over rooms 1-5 Repaired and sealed the parking lot The carpet was replaced in the following areas: the main foyer, the hallway outside Rooms 21 through 33, and at the Weller and Kemper Road entrances. Replaced faded outdoor signs Replaced HVAC units (11)

Installed new flooring in the parish kitchen Screened in the porch at the rectory Installed new LED lighting in the church Installed a new camera system in the church Purchased a zero-turn mower New landscaping outside of Room 11 Re-directed the air flow on the altar Recovered furniture in the office and main gathering space Purchased a new phone system for the parish office Installation of automatic flush valves in all restrooms By the end of the fiscal year, we hope to replace the carpet in the worship space ($90k). The current balance in the Special Projects fund is $215,176. Our goal is to continue building up the Special Projects Fund to meet our future needs. We are currently creating a new 10-year plan for the parish to make sure it remains well maintained for you, and those who follow. Special Projects are listed each quarter in the bulletin as part of the financial report. During the year, when projects are underway, additional updates are provided. Thank you for supporting the parish and donating through the Special Projects envelope. A properly maintained building will allow fu-ture generations to worship and enjoy the parish while minimizing the need for significant repairs with a large price tag. Baptism Infant Baptisms are celebrated on the second and fourth Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m. Please register for Baptism by calling Nancy Dallas (513-489-8815 ext. 761 or e-mail: nancy.dallas@good-shepherd.org). Before the Baptism, parents need to attend a session to explore the meaning of Baptism. Sessions are held on the first Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.

Adult Initiation Into the Church Adults and children (7 years of age or older) who wish to become Catholics are invited to call Emily Weierman, (513-489-8815 ext. 726 or e-mail emily.weierman@good-shepherd.org).

First Eucharist (First Communion) First Eucharist (First Communion) is celebrated on two occasions in early spring. Parents are invited to call Nancy Dallas (513-489-8815 ext. 761). Children are invited to the Sacrament when they are in the second grade or have reached the age of 7. Children receiving First Eucharist (First Communion) need to be prepared to receive First Reconciliation (Confession). Preparation for First Reconciliation (Confession) begins early fall each year.

Confirmation for Youth Confirmation is celebrated in the spring each year for youth who have not yet received the Sacrament. Confirmation Prepa-ration takes place within the 8th grade Faith Formation curriculum. Classes run September through April for next year’s candidates. Marriage Marriages are celebrated throughout the year with exceptions made for Christmas holidays and the season of Lent. Pastoral Care of the Sick Anointing of the Sick The Anointing of the Sick can be offered when someone is seriously ill, requires surgery, or if the same illness or condition becomes more serious. Each week on Wednesday at 6:15 p.m., the anointing is offered within Mass (in the chapel). Please notify Deacon Dennis Berry (513-489-8815, ext. 708, or e-mail: dennis.berry@good-shepherd.org) in advance of your need. Our parish priests also come to the sick person at home, in the hospital, or at Hospice.

Ministry to the Dying: Anointing and/or Viaticum If a person is near death, he or she may be anointed. However, if the dying person is able to swallow, it is recommended that they receive the Eucharist as Viaticum. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick ought to be celebrated at the beginning of an illness. Viaticum is to be celebrated when death is close. The Eucharist, given as Viaticum, is food for the passage through death to eternal life. A priest or a deacon may give Viaticum to the dying person. When a priest is unavailable, it is important that the deacon visit the dying to pray with that person and the family and offer Viaticum. Please call the parish office (489-8815). After hours, please leave a message about the location of the dying person and your contact phone number. That message will be relayed to a priest or deacon.

Reconciliation (Confessions) Tuesdays from 5:30-6:15 p.m. in the Reconciliation Room in the church. Those attending the Sacrament can enter through the doors to the church, prepare in the church and enter the Reconciliation Room when they see the priest is not occupied with another penitent.

Vocations Single men or women interested in answering the call to Priesthood or Religious Life are encouraged to contact the pastor or the Diocesan Vocations Director at 513-421-3131.
