Luke 10:25-37 Rev. Dr. J. D. Landis
Welcome to
Loyalty Sunday
At First United
Methodist
Today is our opportunity to
celebrate our discipleship
by dedicating a financial
commitment to further
investing in all that God has given us. Your
participation in our 2018 Stewardship
Campaign, “Fruitful Practices,” reflects the
care and concern you have for our church
members, the level of support we provide for
our community members, and sharing with
special missions around the world. Our staff
and administrators, and those we help in the
community want to sincerely thank you for your
participation in this year’s campaign.

together to rake yards for those who might
need some help.
Join us for lunch in Fellowship

Hearing assistance is available during worship
services. For the hearing impaired, FUMC offers a
loop system. Hearing aid and cochlear implant
wearers with a telecoil setting can hear the service
broadcast directly through their hearing aids. Others
desiring hearing assistance may check out a
portable receiver and headset from an usher.
Farewell Jennifer
After 12 years, Jennifer Klingler has decided to end her tenure as
FUMC’s Desktop Publisher & Website Manager, effective October 31,
2017. Her creative, colorful, and thorough contributions to the FUMC
website and weekly worship service and announcement bulletins
have been appreciated by all and will be greatly missed.
The Staff-Parish Relations Committee and I are working with Jennifer
for the short-term fulfillment of her responsibilities, and a long-term
“best fit” for the FUMC staff organizational structure.
Thank you, Jennifer, for your many years of service to God and the
FUMC congregation.
Pastor Len, Administrative Pastor
If you wish to start receiving offering
envelopes in 2018, or need to make a

Do you know of anyone who has had a recent
hospitalization or who is having a difficult time?
Our FUMC Member Care committee wants to
serve our members in times of need. We have
many member volunteers who would love to
bring a tailored hot meal to help ease their
burden or time of transition.
Please contact Teri Beasley, [email protected], or 835.6797 ext.
120. She will collect food preferences and any dietary restrictions.
Holy Baptism There will be a baptism of infants, children, youth and
adults on Sunday, December 3. If you wish to arrange a
baptism, please contact Tonya in the church office at
[email protected] or 835.6797 ext. 110.
Charge Conference Sunday, Nov. 12 ▪ 2:00 pm
Saginaw Ames UMC 801 State Street, Saginaw
Throughout the state, United Methodist churches are
being combined into zones, so rather than meet at
FUMC, this year our Charge Conference will be in
Saginaw with eight other churches.
EVERYONE is invited to the Charge Conference, and we would like to
have at least 20 people from FUMC in attendance.
The schedule is as follows.
2:00 pm - Committee Member Training (Finance, Trustees, and SPRC)
led by Rev. David Kim.
Following the 2:00 pm training - meet as a conglomerate of churches.
Rev. Kim will orchestrate this, and pertinent reports will be given
from each church. It will likely last 2 hours.
Please contact Tonya, [email protected] or 835.6797 ext.110, if
you are able to come. It is important to have good representation
from our committees. There is no cost; directions will be provided
upon registration.
Thank you,
Rev. Dr. J. D. Landis

Y ou can help provide a happier Christmas for
our deployed Michigan troops, giving them
a touch of home for the holidays.
Items should be placed in the red box in the office area before noon on Sunday, Nov. 19.
Packing day will be Mon., Nov. 20 starting at
8:00 am at the Bay City National Guard Armory, 2590 Wilder Rd, Bay
City. Volunteers are welcome!
A few suggested items include the following:
• snack foods such as beef jerky, gum, protein and granola bars
• baby wipes, lip balm
• AA, AAA, and C batteries, crossword puzzle books, math puzzle
books, playing cards, horseshoe games • greeting cards are always welcome. Troops love to hear from us!
For a full list of requested items see the “Send Santa to the Troops”
event on the FUMC website homepage, www.fumcmidweb.org.
For further information, contact Welton and Lorraine House at
837.6762 or [email protected].
It’s Sharig Tree Tie! One of FUMC’s largest and most fulfilling
community programs is United Way’s Sharing
Tree event, which kicks this week. Trees are
popping up everywhere and you will have an
opportunity to choose your own tags, which list
specific requests. This is the best way we know to
help make people happy over the holidays, and
there’s nothing more fun than imagining a little
child’s eyes when he or she opens a gift from
Santa.
Along with gift requests, you will find requests for gas cards and other
gift certificates, which you might find easier to purchase. It’s been an
especially tough year for so many residents, so be bold…grab several
tags. It’ll make your day, we promise.
The easiest way to wrap your gifts is in a gift bag, with the tag attached
to the handle, and then just return it to the tree in the office area of the
church.

(home, work, vacation…). Please sign up for one or more 30 minute
time slots. If you are unable to sign yourself up, please call Teri in the

Peg Born, [email protected].
The story of Christian reformation, revival, and renaissance
underscores that the darkest hour is often just before the dawn, so we
should always be people of hope and prayer, not gloom and defeatism.
God the Holy Spirit can turn the situation around in five minutes.

Beth Moore Study Among New Items
at the FUMC Library
A Beth Moore DVD Bible study, Esther: It's Tough
Being a Woman, is now available at the church
library. This is a
9-week group video study of Esther - a profile in
courage. Join Beth in a very personal examination
of this great story of threat and deliverance as she
shows how contemporary and applicable the
story of Esther is to our lives today. If you've ever felt inadequate,
threatened, or pushed into situations that seemed overpowering, this is
the Bible study for you.
Freedom Over Me: Eleven Slaves, Their Lives and
Dreams Brought to Life is inspired by the actual will of
a plantation owner that lists the worth of each of his
“workers.” The author has created collages around
that document, and through paintings and poetry,
he interprets each person’s life on the plantation, as
well as the life their owner knew nothing about—their
dreams. This is a Newbery Honor Book and Coretta
Scott King Honor Book.
Rosie by Anne LaMott is the story of Elizabeth Ferguson
and her daughter Rosie - her smart-mouthed and wise-
beyond-her-years alter ego. As Rosie grows older,
Elizabeth must find a way to nurture her extraordinary
daughter—even if it means growing up herself. The
sequel, Imperfect Birds, finds Rosie at 17 and showing
signs that the life she's claiming to lead is a sham. Her
deception will have profound consequences.

Fall Harvest Tea & UMW Business Meeting
Tuesday, November 7 1:00-3:00 pm ▪ Parlor
Director Tori Booker or Attorney Melanie
Golberg will speak about the United Methodist
Immigration Ministry, Justice for Our Neighbors
(JFON) Southeastern Michigan. Major immigration issues that exist in
our nation today will be addressed. JFON’s most common cases
involve family reunification, escape from violence, and work
authorization. JFON has, for more than seven years, provided free,
high quality immigration legal services to those in need. Fear abounds
among children and adults as they immigrate to this county.
Please bring finger foods; beverages will be provided. Questions?
Please contact Rose Burleson, [email protected].
Sr. High Roll Bake November 11 is the first Roll Bake of the fall. All
proceeds for Roll Bakes go to support the Sr. High
United Methodist Youth Fellowship and our Spring
Break Mission Trip.
Both types of rolls can be donated to Hidden
Harvest – a food rescue and distribution agency here in the Great
Lakes Bay Region! So, if you would like to support the youth, but would
rather not have the rolls yourselves, consider donating them to Hidden
Harvest. The Sr. High youth will receive the proceeds, while Hidden
Harvest and those they help are given fresh rolls. (All donations of rolls
to Hidden Harvest must be prepaid.)
The cost is $3.50 for plain, and $4.00 for cinnamon.
You can place your order or donation of rolls to Hidden Harvest by:
• Contacting your favorite Sr. High youth.
• Filling out a yellow pew card (for personal orders) and putting it in
the offering plate or dropping it off in the office with Attn: John
Engler. • Filling out a white pew envelope (for donation of rolls to Hidden
Harvest) and putting it in the offering plate or dropping it off in the
church office. • Calling the Church Office, 835.6797.
Order deadline is Sunday, November 5. As always, we appreciate
your support of our youth and our Sr. High UMYF. The next roll bake will
be December 9.
