The house, which is in the St James’ Conservation Area is a Grade 2 Listed Building. The central part dates back to the 1600’s and the extensions at either end were added in the 1820’s. The house was at one time connected to The Cock and one landlady at The Cock lived at The Parsonage for a time.

In 1864, the Moss family moved into the Parsonage as tenants and later, Fletcher Moss bought the property. Fletcher Moss was an Alderman, a JP and an author, writing many books about his trips around the local area and wider country. He was also instrumental in persuading the Carnegie Foundation to set up the Library in Didsbury. Fletcher Moss opened the library in 1915. Fletcher Moss lived at The Parsonage until his death in 1919.

In his will he left the house and

gardens and the land which is now Fletcher Moss Park, to the people of Didsbury and Manchester. He wanted the property to be used by the people. From his death until 1978, the building was used as an Art Gallery and Museum. Many Didsbury residents remember the Turner paintings which were on display and the other common, fond memory is the rocking baby cradle which was displayed in one of the rooms.

In 1978 it was felt that the collection would be safer with the other paintings in Manchester Art Gallery and Whitworth Art Gallery and the Art Gallery and Museum was closed. The property was used as offices for various departments of Manchester City Council after that, until about 14 months ago when the last department moved out.

The house has stood empty since then. In February 2011 the Didsbury Civic Society approached Manchester City Council and discussed the Society taking over the Parsonage to make it into a Community Hub for the residents of Didsbury. We were given the go ahead after a business plan was formulated.

The DCS then formed a separate charity and company called The Didsbury Parsonage Trust in order to create a separate identity for this exciting project

We are currently well into the process of negotiating a 22 year lease, with the option to extend, on a full repairing basis. The house is in very good condition but does require some repairs and restoration work. This work amounts to over £120,000, of which we have raised £85,000 so far including a Heritage Lottery

WHAT WE HAVE ALREADY ACHIEVED

All donations will be used for the refurbishing of the building in order toreinstate its heritage status and make it suitable for community use.

We will have to pay rent to Manchester City Council for the use of the building. Any money we invest in its fabric will be counted against future rent. Once the

initial building work is completed e Parsonage will be completely self-nancing.

Grant. This money invested into the building will give us a 10 year rent free period.

The four large rooms on the ground floor, which are all fully accessible by people with a disability, will be used as community rooms for meetings, training sessions, courses, conferences, workshops, parties, etc. There will be a small charge for community use.

There will be a wide variety of equipment which can be used by local groups. The groups would be expected to pay the material costs but this equipment is not intended to make a profit. Training will be available for anyone using the equipment.

The ground floor rooms will also be used for exhibitions and displays of art, photography, crafts, heritage etc. A

commission will be charged on any sales resulting from any commercial display.

Some of the rooms upstairs, will be sub-let to small businesses, and this will provide the bulk of the money to cover the running costs. There is a three room suite and two single rooms. There is also a large conference room on the upper floor which can be used by these businesses, if they are not booked for community use. Unfortunately the first floor rooms are not disabled accessible.

We have set up a Friends of the Parsonage group and membership fees will be paid into the account to go towards the running costs.

We are also holding a range of events around Didsbury, both to raise funds and to raise aware-ness of this project.

We are asking for donations from

the Community to cover these refurbishment costs. Any amount, will help although if anyone can afford to give us £200 or more, they will be added to the Donor’s

Board (if they wish) we are setting up in the Entrance Hall.

This is a one-off appeal since when the Parsonage is up and running as a community hub it will be completely self-financing.

At last! Something a bit different for all us foodies. Situated opposite Chorlton bus station, Hotspot Ess Paradies offers “traditional German cuisine with an emphasis on authentic Bavarian and Hessian cooking.” A fresh, modern decor with booth-style seating welcomes you into a relaxed and family-friendly atmosphere, where, thanks to the courtesy and philosophy of the management, you’ll quite rightly want to linger a while.

The extensive menu, something of a surprise to this reviewer, offers a wide array of starters and mains, from bratwurst to bockwurst to fish and noodle dishes to numerous meals I couldn’t even begin to pronounce, whilst the children’s menu more than caters for the younger palette. And if you’re really hungry, check out the daily specials for such delights as Hackbraten (German meatloaf) and Rouladen nach Mutti’s Art; a classic roulade filled with pickle, mustard, bacon and onion.

For a starter, my friend and I shared the Gemüsestreifen für Zwei (£4.00) - sticks of seasonal vegetables with homemade Tzatziki dip and a delicious chilli and pepper hummus. Perfect for getting the juices flowing in anticipation of what was to come.

For my main, I chose the Bayerische Bauern-pfanne or Bavarian Farmer’s Platter (£6.00); whilst my veggie friend, for once spoilt for choice, opted for the vegetarian schnitzel (£6.50). The platter (pan fried potatoes, with Nüberger sausage, peppers, onions, and peas, topped with scrambled eggs) was superbly presented, very tasty and a perfect choice for brunch. My friend described the schnitzel (an Austrian escalope made with couscous, courgette and carrots; breaded, pan fried, and served with seasonal vegetables or fries, with a rich gravy) as hearty, filling, and quite simply delicious.

Dessert was Fantakuchen (£3.50), a popular German cake made intriguingly with a dash of Fanta orange. Light and creamy, it proved a perfect palette cleanser and a fine finale to our lunch.

Manager Ramin and his team offer simple, honest and tasty food. So, if you’re looking for a hearty lunch or an informal evening meal, then Hotspot Ess Paradies is definitely the place for you.

Hotspot indeed. It certainly hit mine.

Like the Gurkhas this restaurant is an old establishment that deserves respect for what it does.

The Gurkha Grill has been on Burton Road for many years and I’ve been to it a number of times but it has been a good while since my last visit so I was intrigued to see what was new. First things first, it has undergone a new design with intimate little booths, and modern leather seating which was a welcome change from the worn carpet of typical curry houses. The distinctive Gurkha swords’ are also prominent in art works hanging on the wall. These touches all make one realize that they are not at a regular “Indian”, for this is a Nepalese restaurant.

Scanning through the extensive menu one is spoilt for choice if not overwhelmed. There are the regular traditional curries such as the tandooris, bhunas and Rogan Josh’s of this world, but then there are a number of Nepalese specialities. We started with some poppadoms and chutneys and ordered a vegetable samosa and Momo, which were described as steamed dumplings that “hold a special place in the Nepalese people’s hearts”. Well we just had to order them. A hearty bowl arrived of what I can only describe as Nepalese Dim Sum, chicken mince wrapped in rice noodle. They were served in a very spicy sauce of cumin and fresh spices that I enjoyed immensely. It was a really different dish than the normal offerings. The poppadoms and vegetable samosa I must say were not the best. The poppadoms tasted like they had been cooked in burnt oil and the samosa was too spicy. On a plus side the chutneys seemed very fresh.

Moving on to the mains we ordered a good variety of their specials: Chicken Sagar Matha Piro Piro, Gurkhali Chicken, Aduwa Kukhura or Ginger Lamb and Paneer Kadai with some Pilau rice and plain Naan bread. The lamb was tender with fresh spices and lots of ginger to add to the rich flavours from cooking slowly in a clay oven. The chicken also was tender and moist, and the spices in the sauces were fresh tasting. One word of warning, the Gurkhas are known to be fierce fighters and I think after eating their spicier dishes I can see that they certainly have a fire in their belly! When it says “Very Hot” on the menu it means very hot. The Paneer I was reliably informed from our resident vegetarian was “the nicest Paneer I’ve ever had” which was high praise indeed. I did try a bit and it was very tasty but I’m no connoisseur like my learned friend

on the other side of the table. The rice and naan also deserve a special mention. Too often in curry houses the pilau rice is served in lurid colours with a ring of oil surrounding it and the naans are dripping in oil. This pilau had no strange colouring, no oiliness, but instead was light and fluffy, how rice should be. The naan was especially good, tasting really fresh and homemade.

The Gurkha Grill is a very good curry house, especially if you stick to the Nepalese dishes, which they do with aplomb.

Blocked Gutters?

Call BenGutters Cleared & Repaired

There is a great deal to say about April in the garden; it’s a time to divide and replant existing herbaceous perennials as well as a very good month to get new plants in the ground ready for the a summer show. But having just been out in my garden with a cup of tea before starting work I couldn’t help but be warmed by the sight of two Euphorbia characias wulfenii looking stately and slightly Jurassic in large pots against my sunny back wall. Euphorbia are among some of

my favourite plants – a huge genus which has gone in and out of fashion over the last hundred years or so, but in most of the gardens you are likely to visit you will inevitably see one or a number of their variety and this is because they are great border plants. I remember first seeing a E.characias wulfenii in a quirky garden in the Cotswolds created by an equally quirky, stuff-and-nonsense woman who wore a trilby and charged a 50p entrance fee and turned a blind eye to picnics on her lawn. It was huge and positioned against the Edwardian house in a gravel bed with other cottage garden favourites and looked nostalgically magnificent. Euphorbias are a striking plant with slightly ‘alien’ characteristics (as in proper aliens not just strange) – in E.characias, lime green cylindrical bracts are held above bright grey/green leaf-littered stems. Among my

other favourites are E. palustris, a fresh lime green and slightly more delicate variety and E. griffithii ‘Fireglow’ or ‘Dixter’ bearing orange bracts – both of these need plenty of water and some staking to keep them from flopping onto other plants but they are striking border additions. Another variety I have in my garden is E. mellifera – the Honey Spurge, so called because of the strong smell of honey given off at flowering time. Another feature of this plant is that the seeds literally explode on sunny days – at first I thought I was being attacked by undercover squirrels throwing very small nuts (it’s possible?) before realising it was the facility developed to spread the seed beyond the canopy of the plant. Prone to frost but definitely worth a try.

The Diabolical TiddlesBy Tom McLaughlin

Published by Simon and Schuster £5.99

Fearsome dinosaurs, whooshing jetpacks, rockstar guitars, a horse called Alan...just a few of the things Harry unexpectedly finds in his bedroom. Where are they coming from?

Tom is given what he wants most ‘in the whole wide world’, a cat! Tom makes sure his new ‘furry-purry’ friend Mr Tiddles is as happy as a cat could be, and makes sure he has everything he could possibly need. In return the adventurous Mr Tiddles loves Tom, and treats him with ever more extravagant and outrageous treats, and with the arrival of Alan, the horse, Tom decides it is time to investigate.

‘The Diabolical Mr Tiddles’ is funny and engaging, and the quirky illustrations provide lots to talk about. This is a brilliant and charming debut book from Tom McLaughlin.
