Playing it Forward in KelownaIn 2017, the City of Kelowna allocated its share of provincial gaming revenues for hosting Playtime Casino and Chances Kelowna to support public safety in a myriad of ways, from enhanced policing to a variety of crime prevention initiatives.

One such program was Project 529, an innovative program to prevent bike theft that’s been embraced by municipalities across B.C. and beyond. Participants are encouraged to register their bike with the program. They receive a Project 529 sticker that lets would-be thieves know that if they steal that bike, an alert will be sent to other registrants, and the biking community will be looking out for it. The program has helped return many stolen bikes to their owners—something that is typically an uncommon occurrence.

Similarly, the City lead a campaign to increase public awareness around auto theft, with their program “Don’t be an easy target.” The campaign included events, social media outreach and a contest to encourage behaviours that prevent theft.

Each year, local governments in B.C. that host a gaming facility receive a 10 percent share of the net revenue those facilities generate. Last year, 32 Host Local Governments across B.C. received $102.1 million to fund local projects and initiatives.
