INTRODUCTION
Hello all! The U11 HUB Programme is back at ready to kick off. The 2019 U11 HUB programme enables
Wellington Hockey to offer a significant number of young players the opportunity to develop their basic
hockey skills over a period of seven weeks and then put these skills into practice in a festival day in Kapiti
and a weekend festival in the Wairarapa.
The U11 HUB will run in Maidstone, Fraser Park, Elsdon, NHS and Kapiti.
Each HUB will have a lead coach as main contact point for questions and who will arrange gear and allocate the trainers.
Importantly, the programme is also a great development opportunity for coaches and future umpires–
it is a chance for coaches in our community to extend their coaching skills with this age group. Also, we
encourage older siblings and parents to join in and give their umpiring skills a go. Both coaches and
umpires will have access to ongoing support, in an inclusive and supporting environment.
This programme is hugely important for Wellington and Capital Hockey, as it focuses on
introducing fundamental hockey skills required to play the game of hockey, aligned with the U11
curriculum of Wellington Hockey which focusses on the holistic development framework of the
Person, the Athlete and the Player.
Please find below the U11 curriculum, which outlines how we develop the person, athlete and
player and what you can expect from the coaches. The Character attributes and Development
protocols reflect on how we coach and what you as parents can expect from the trainers and lead
coach!
U11 Curriculum
Game Principles: Find Space
Game Concept:
• With the Ball (pass into space away from congestion),
• Without the Ball (move into space)
Playing Style: S.P.A.C – Scan, Pass & Connect (look, pass & move, look, pass & move)
Core Hockey Fundamentals:
• Body Position – feet at least shoulder width apart for stability & strength on the ball, knees bent, bottom
down, left elbow extended with stick away from feet to promote vision and ability to move without ball touching
feet.
• Correct stick grip for receiving, carrying & passing
• Vision (eyes up) before passing
• Soft Hands – ball to remain on stick from receive to pass – building ball control
• Agility, speed & coordination (fast feet, transfer of weight (to help with elimination technique, change in
direction)

Technical Skills:
• Push Pass – static and on the move and off both feet
• Receiving – Forehand (encouraging forehand application improves agility) & with soft hands
• Ball Carrying – Forehand & at 1 O’Clock – left elbow extended to promote good vision
• Elimination – Forehand & Reverse
• Tackling – On the move – with stick on the ground at all times
• Hitting – stationary – short-handle application (safer and easier to execute)
• Goal-Scoring – focus on getting eyes up early and body in a position to take a shot on goal as soon as circle is
entered. Encourage either a push pass or a hit (not a sweep).
Character Attributes:
• Positive, Fun, Encouraging & Inclusive environment focusing on process (how the game was played) not outcome (winning etc.)
• Encouraging positive and useful/constructive communication among athletes both on and off the turf.
Development Protocols:
• Everyone rotates positions (very important for development that players know how to play as a defender, midfielder, attacker)
• Rotation of leadership opportunities – everyone needs to develop leadership skills/responsibilities
• Rotation of set-piece moves/opportunities – everyone needs to develop set-piece moves – attacking pc, defensive pcs, shoot-outs, strokes etc.
