For more than 40 years, the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines has improved quality of life for all by promoting charitable giving, connecting donors with causes they care about and providing leadership on important community issues.
We’re simply better together.
Great accomplishments often begin with a strong vision and a commitment to realize it.
In 2012 we developed a strategic plan to guide our work in the next five years with an emphasis on building community endowments, supporting the work of charitable organizations and engaging donors in giving opportunities. In addition, our focus moving forward is to build on our community leadership work by continuing to identify and address community needs and opportunities. This year’s annual report focuses on key projects over our 40-year history where we’ve done just that—taken a key leadership and funding role, partnered with charitable organizations and engaged donors and community leaders to tackle important community projects. We are so proud of the impact of our collective work and the significant influence our donors, volunteers and staff have in improving quality of life in our community now and in the future. Your support makes this work possible. Thank you for being a part of this incredible organization and community. Your generosity is creating a legacy and building the foundation for a strong future for our communities and state.

Endow Iowa
“We’ve been able to give more because of Endow Iowa Tax Credits. The program encourages local giving to Iowa charities and provides a significant tax incentive. It’s a great feeling to support the causes we care about at an even greater level while building our charitable endowment.”

$115,000,000
Endow Iowa allows taxpayers to receive a 25% Iowa tax credit in addition to
normal federal charitable income tax deductions for certain charitable gifts.
Our leadership in advocating for one of the nation’s most coveted philanthropic
programs provides millions of charitable dollars for our future needs.

“Without the leadership of the Community
Foundation and the personnel there, the
Endow Iowa Tax Credit program would
not have taken place. It inspires people to
contribute back to their communities for long-
range planning and create a real legacy in their
own communities.”
Scott Raecker

“I feel strongly that the Endow Iowa Tax Credit
has increased charitable giving in Iowa and
has therefore made overall quality of life better
in our state. Endow Iowa continues to grow in
favor with legislators in a bipartisan manner
who have worked to not only create the
program, but continue to grow it so all Iowans
can continue to support local charities.”

Statewide Giving
The County Endowment Fund Program
legislation created a community foundation
presence in every Iowa county. The Community
Foundation of Greater Des Moines is one
of nine host community foundations in the
state of Iowa that provides investment and
administrative expertise for these efforts
to build philanthropy with local community
foundations created through the County
Endowment Fund Program, encouraging new
giving opportunities in rural counties and
communities throughout the state. $50,000,000
“It’s always been important to our family to give back. Through our local community foundation we can make a difference where it really matters. Creating our family’s charitable fund made it possible to support many interests in our county and community.”

Connecting Kids and Culture
Connecting Kids and Culture provides 65 percent of all
funding available for in-class and field experiences for
schools in Polk, Dallas and Warren counties.
“We simply could not provide these cultural experiences without the funding. The students look so forward to it and the parents are thrilled with the experiences.”

8 Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines | 2013 Annual Report
The Community Foundation and Bravo
Greater Des Moines recognize that with
budget constraints, many schools do not
have funding to provide field experiences
for students. The organizations created
Connecting Kids and Culture to bridge
that gap and respond to this important
community need. The program provides
funding for admission fees and transportation
to educational experiences outside the
classroom and provides opportunities for
educators to bring local arts and cultural
experiences into their schools, while directly
aligning community-based arts and cultural
learning to core curriculum objectives. The
Community Foundation and Bravo combined
contributions from The Principal Charity
Classic® to start Connecting Kids and
Culture in 2007 and continue to use yearly
contributions from the event to support
the program.
“This program is brilliant. It boosts
the revenue of participating cultural
organizations and opens the classroom
to new cultural experiences. We are so
thankful for this funding that allows our
organization to engage teachers and their
students in purposeful discovery about the
world around them.”

Bravo Greater Des Moines
Bravo Greater Des Moines, the region’s arts council, is a nonprofit
organization committed to strengthening the metro area’s arts and
cultural community as a key element of a world-class quality of life.
The Community Foundation provided
leadership, convened and provided funding for

sustainable funding streams as leaders in the
arts and cultural arena organized themselves
into what we know today as Bravo Greater
Des Moines. The Community Foundation
continues to provide funding and endowment
management to support Bravo.
“The Community Foundation recognized early
on the benefits of a vibrant arts and culture
scene in Greater Des Moines and provided
the necessary catalyst, via financial support
and staffing, to get our organization off the
ground. I am so proud of what Bravo is
accomplishing as an organization
representing and funding the best interests of
a unified arts and culture community. Together
we are bringing economic growth and

80/35 Music Festival
Des Moines houses the Midwestern
connection hub of interstates 80 and 35,
bringing a number of bands and fans traveling
the “summer festival circuit” through the city.
Major, cutting-edge acts that drive through Des
Moines for festivals in Chicago, Milwaukee or
Kansas City now stay and play thanks to the
Des Moines Music Coalition’s 80/35 Music
Festival. The Community Foundation’s
Leadership Grant to the Des Moines Music
Coalition launched the 80/35 Music Festival
in 2008.
“Des Moines is ideally positioned in the upper
Midwest to be a destination for live music.
The Community Foundation came along at
a critical time as our founding funder and
provided seed money that enabled us to put
this festival together. I give them a lot of
credit for having the vision to take this idea
and help us implement it.”

throughout Greater Des Moines. The
Community Foundation was an early partner in
the establishment of the Greater Des Moines
Public Art Foundation and continues to provide

“Des Moines is blessed with a tradition of
public art that far exceeds communities twice
our size. This tradition speaks volumes about
our values and contributes greatly to the
quality of life in our city. For ten years the
Greater Des Moines Public Art Foundation
has facilitated public/private partnerships to

Strong nonprofit organizations must have
effective and engaged board members, and
part of our mission is to strengthen charitable
organizations. The Community Foundation
BoardLaunch training series enhances the
management and leadership skills of local
nonprofit boards by providing technical,
governance and leadership instruction.
“We talk about fundraising and responsibilities
of a board, but when we sent new and
seasoned members to a BoardLaunch
workshop, a spark ignited. They felt enabled
with great information and inspired to become
more engaged. We are so thankful the
Community Foundation continues to respond
to the needs of the nonprofit sector with
timely and affordable training opportunities

Evelyn K. Davis Center for Working Families.
The Center provides an integrated program
of services, including direct job placement
assistance, career enhancement programs,
social, family and workforce support services
and training. Community leaders, neighborhood
residents and local businesses are working
together to create change, improve quality
of life and facilitate significant impact in Des
Moines’ urban core.
“The Evelyn K. Davis Center for Working
Families takes people from wherever they are,
often unemployed or facing some barrier to
employment, right into the workforce, giving
them a real chance to improve their lives. The
Community Foundation was key to bringing
this dream of a much needed employment
center in the heart of Des Moines to reality.
They convened key stakeholders and donors

Local leaders are taking advantage of
opportunities and addressing challenges
through a clear vision and plan for Iowa’s
capital region. The Community Foundation
and the Greater Des Moines Partnership
collaborated with local government,
education, health care, business and
community leaders on this strategic
community and economic development
planning process.
Capital Crossroads focus areas include
Business Capital, Capital Core, Capital
Corridor, Cultural Capital, Environmental
Capital, Governance Capital, Human Capital,
Physical Capital, Social Capital, Urban Core
and Wellness Capital. Each of the capital
plans impacts growth in its area of focus and
on an integrated basis.
“When the Community Foundation and
Partnership leadership initially discussed
the idea of developing a new bold vision
for Greater Des Moines, we knew we had
an incredible opportunity to work together
to help take Central Iowa to the next level.
The Community Foundation played a critical
role in launching the Capital Crossroads
visioning process by convening community
leaders and providing significant funding and
staffing support.
Capital Crossroads is the only
comprehensive regional vision plan that
we are aware of that has a strong focus
on social capital. Community Foundation
leaders were instrumental in ensuring
that civility, diversity, and next generation
leadership were key elements of the
Capital Crossroads plan, and the Community
Foundation is currently helping lead the
implementation of the Social Capital work
platform. This unique regional focus
certainly will give Greater Des Moines yet
another competitive advantage
moving forward.”

Mosqueda Family Families Giving Back
When Richard and Antonia Mosqueda
opened the first Tasty Tacos in 1961, they
had two tables in their small restaurant, the
family recipe and a lot of faith. Fifty years and
five locations later, the family is adding structure
to a practice that has always been important –
charitable giving.
Daughter of the founders and current president
of Tasty Tacos Linda Mosqueda-Blair says her
father had a reputation for giving to whoever
was in need, even when he didn’t have
a lot to give.
The practice became important to his
children, and the family recently established
the Mosqueda Family Foundation Fund at
the Community Foundation to facilitate their
charitable giving. The family considered
opening a private foundation, but at the advice
of their attorneys Scott Riemenschneider
and Steve Despotovich, worked with the
Community Foundation to minimize costs and
administration.
Nada es imposible.
