PERHAMSCHOOLS MESSAGE FROM SUPERINTENDENT MITCH ANDERSON

Spring is nearly here, which means that we are on the last leg of our construction journey! There is still plenty of work to be done in each of the schools throughout the summer, but we are close to finishing up all of our projects. The 2017-18 School Year was the first full year in the elementary additions, and it has been a smooth transition. Students, parents, and teachers are all enjoying the new spaces. Kids Adventure is now part of the daily operations at HOTL, which is allowing more collaboration, shared spaces, and security compared to their old building. The new 4th Grade classroom wing is based on the house concept that is used at Prairie Wind Middle School. Fourth graders now have the opportunity to get used to the model before they move into it the following year. Our new gymnasium provides more space for students to get some physical activity during the day, while also being a great gathering spot for school-wide programs and activities. At Prairie Wind Middle School, we are preparing to revamp some existing spaces into new classrooms this summer. With the new high school next door, the two schools can share classroom spaces that aren't used every period of the day - such as band and choir rooms. This allows us to shift some spaces around to make room for new classrooms, special education rooms, and offices. This school year, we also upgraded the security system so that every person needs to get buzzed into the building. These added security measures help ensure our students and staff are safe throughout the school day. The new Perham High School is on track for completion in July 2018. The structure is about 70% completed, and we are thrilled to see all of the hard work of so many different teachers, architects, consultants, school board members, community members, and more come to fruition. The building model offers so many new features in terms of flexible learning spaces, enhanced security, a separate career tech building, and more. We can hardly wait to share it with you during open houses and tours this fall.

SCHOOL UPDATES PHS CLASS OF 2018 COMMENCEMENT There has been quite a bit of talk and confusion with the early start of the school year, so we thought we would take a moment and clear things up.

The early start to the school year did not affect the Graduation Date or Time which has, historically, been Memorial Day Sunday at 2pm. This is hold true for this year as well. The early start eliminates the days of education for students and staff after graduation so construction can begin taking place at PWMS.

DIANA PORATH NAMED TEACHER OF THE YEAR Diana Porath, instructor at the Alternative Learning Center, has been selected as the 2017-18 District 549 Teacher of the Year!

Diana’s degree is from University of Minnesota, Mankato. Diana majored in math with a physical education minor. Back then, you could teach part time with a minor in an area. She has a lifetime certificate in teaching, which is no longer available to teachers. Today, teachers need to renew their license every 5 years. In 1978, she started teaching in Perham – and she is still here! She tried to retire, but then started working at the Area Learning Center. She is now in her 9th year at the ALC.

When reflecting on her career, Diana said, “I guess I always wanted to be a teacher. It is such a good feeling to be able explain a concept (especially in math) and see the lights go on when a student understands it. I guess I learned that from my uncle who taught math at Mankato. He had a way of explaining to me which I picked up on and always tried to put things in a way that my students could understand or relate to.”

For more information on Diana, check out the blog post on our website!

N BUILDING UPDATE

Our building projects are nearing the next stages, and we are excited to continually see progress. If you’ve been driving by, you probably think that they have stopped working on it altogether but that is not the case! The focus now is on the inside of the building, and it is coming together quickly. The end of the school year was bumped up early this year to accommodate for the summer of construction that we’ll have going on. School lets out on May 23, and the crews have been joking that they will be helping PWMS teachers move out of their classrooms so they can get started.

4

For the first time in over 25 years, ISD #549 will have all of their buildings located on the same campus.

The Career Tech Building is located on the north side of the high school and has been designed to be a 360 degree manufacturing center. The term 360 degree is used for two reasons: 1.! It is a wide open facility where you can see around the

entire space. 2.! It also contains all of the equipment that you might

see in an industrial shop. The facility is modeled after professional shops, including all of the different equipment that will be available. Some of the components include complete metal fabrication, different stages of welding, CNC mills and lathes, CNC plasma cutter, and more. This is not just training equipment. It’s the equipment students that is used directly in the field. In some cases, students will use the same software as industries in our community. Once completed, the Career Tech Building will support the high school capstone program in Career and Technical Education. The program is aligned with the Career Pathways schedule, which allows students interested in a certain pathway to live in that world during their time at PHS. Students are also able to take certain Articulated Courses that allow them to earn college credits at participating technical colleges.

Career and technical education (CTE) is an important part of high school curriculum. CTE programs provide a variety of opportunities in industrial trades, agriculture, business, and culinary and family health services. These opportunities are designed as feeder programs for businesses in our community and give students a leg up when they graduate.

United Way’s Day of Caring is one day each year where volunteers set aside a few hours to give back to the community through a morning of helping. Teams of volunteers from the Frazee High School gather to complete much needed tasks such as raking, window washing, litter pick-up, spring cleaning, landscaping, gardening, and general repairs. It’s a single day of service with a big community impact. Last year we had 400 plus students and 40 staff who took to the streets, lawns, schools, parks, and senior centers to give back to over 60 families in our area. INSTRUCTORS WANTED We are currently looking for instructors that are willing to share their hobbies and interests with the community. Instructors of all types are desired, from personal enrichment to technology and workforce skills. Our most desired areas are in adult personal enrichment from crafting to baking and cooking to photography and graphic design. While these are the most asked for, all types of education are wanted. Teaching community education classes is a great way to earn a little extra money while having fun. Worried that you aren’t an expert in anything? Nonsense. There are two ways to look at it:

1.! Reframe the Process. Call it “sharing” instead of “teaching.” There is less pressure when you are simply sharing what you know with others as opposed to teaching them what they don’t know. It doesn’t make what you know less valuable to students, but it certainly makes getting started easier.

2.! Become an Expert by Teaching Others. When you teach someone else, you begin to understand it better yourself. You also learn better initially, because your brain is priming you to get ready to teach it to another person. If you are ready to learn more about one of your favorite hobbies or interests and make a little money in the process, teaching a community education course is exactly where you should start.

GET THE DIRT ON COMPOSTING Instructor: Sandy Gunderson, Becker County Environmental Services It looks like summer is getting closer. Before you know it, it will be time to enjoy the beautiful weather, spruce up the garden, eat delicious fruits and vegetables, and…get that compost pile started! Of the 251 million tons of waste Americans generate every year, about 28% could be composted. But in 2012, only about 8% of the total waste generated was composted. Help increase the recovery of waste in the United States by starting your very own compost pile. Composting offers numerous real benefits including: •! Saving you money and reducing toxicity by decreasing the need for expensive chemical fertilizers and pesticides. •! Improving your garden as it enriches soil by helping to keep moisture in, and pests and diseases out! •! Lowering your carbon footprint as waste is diverted from landfills, therefore reducing methane emissions. Composting isn’t difficult; anyone can do it! Getting your compost pile started, and keeping it going, just requires the right mix of ingredients and a little bit of time. Once you use some finished compost in your garden, you’ll know why gardeners call it “black gold”. FRAZEE: Wednesday, April 18; 6:30-8pm Frazee High School Room 336 (Door 16) Fee: No Charge

TOUR OF THE PERHAM RESOURCE RECOVERY FACILITY From Waste To Energy- Where Does Your Solid Waste Go? Instructors: Staff of Perham Resource Recovery Facility, Otter Tail County Solid Waste Staff, & Sandy Gunderson, Becker County Environmental Services In the early 1980’s, the primary waste disposal concern was our landfill space was filling up and we would soon be out of disposal capacity. How many of us remember the story about the garbage barge that sailed out of the New York harbor looking for a landfill home for its load of waste. That particular barge caught the attention of the world as it sailed up and down the east coast for several years. Because of landfill space, issues with groundwater pollution, and public sentiment of ‘Not in My Backyard’ many counties in Minnesota began to look for alternatives to landfilling of solid waste. Trash and industrial incinerators have changed significantly from the early 1980’s to 2016. Come join us for this great learning opportunity and see how waste is handled in our area. MAKE AND TAKE--NON-TOXIC PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS AND CLEANERS Instructor: Sandy Gunderson, Becker County Environmental Services Chemicals are part of our lives. We treat illnesses, paint our houses, and even clothe ourselves with products that have been developed through chemical research. However, there are reasons to be cautious about our exposure to some chemicals. A good principle to follow is always to look for ways to reduce or eliminate the use of toxic chemicals as we go about our daily lives, to keep our homes safe for our children, our pets, and us. Simple changes in our everyday routines can reduce our long-term exposures to low levels of potentially harmful substances—changes in how we choose the products we buy, or the ways we clean our houses and take care of the yard. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has conducted a study of 3,000 people from around the country that found traces of 27 chemicals in all of the sampled population, including metals, pesticides, Phthalate, and tobacco by-products. Whether you’re looking to lower your exposure certain potentially toxic ingredients in store-bought products or to save yourself some money or both, it’s easy to make your own less-toxic cleaners using common household ingredients and some clean, empty containers. These changes will not only make our homes safer, they may also save us money. Come and ‘make and take’ some non-toxic cleaners and personal care products for you and your family. FRAZEE: Thursday, April 19; 6:30-8pm Frazee High School Room 336 (Door 16) Fee: No Charge

SCAMS, CONS, AND FRAUDS Instructor: Barry Fitzgibbons, Chief Deputy, Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office Although many older adults are often more fearful of violent crime, rarely are they victims of random violence. However, they may fall victim to a less obvious threat that seldom makes the front page of the newspaper. Because they tend to have retirement savings, they are more trusting and willing to help others, or they may have little or no contact with friends or family, many seniors find themselves the preferred targets of con artists, who attempt time and time again to trick them out of their hard-earned savings. Call it scam, trick, cheat or swindle--perpetrators will do and say whatever it takes to persuade you to give them what they want. This class is to educate you and your family in different types of scams, how to recognize and prevent them, things you should never do, and if you should fall victim, what to do and where to go.
