Association for Home and Community Education

Notes From The HCE Co-Presidents

“A Reflection of You” was

the theme of the 65th Spring

Banquet, on May 2, at the

Rendezvous. We had a tasty

chicken dinner, with all the

trimmings and pies. We enjoyed

Barb Engelbert Chisholm’s

portrayal of her great-

grandmother in attire and story as

she shared memories of the

Peshtigo Fire, Oct. 8, 1871.

The Kewaunee County

Wisconsin Bookworms

conducted the bake-less bake

sale. Thank you to all who

contributed again to make this

successful.

Two HCE scholarship awards

were presented to the

granddaughters of our members

Joan Karl and Anita Schuller.

The Barb Hartjes Memorial

Scholarship was presented to

Mitch Kudick. Barb was a

member of HCE.

The Outstanding HCE

member award was presented to

Jan Tess. She is our newly

elected co-president, and was

presented the award by Anita

Schuller, our other newly elected

co-president.

Our annual HCE trip took us

to the New Glarus area this year.

We are looking forward to Music

in the Park on July 9, enjoying

delicious pies made by our

members and the fantastic show

of “Let Me Be Frank”. July 29,

we will again make delicious pies

for the Pig Roast, served down by

the marina in Kewaunee.

HCE will be promoted in an

educational booth at Farm

Technology Days, July 11-13, in

the Family Living Tent,

co-chaired by Judy & Mari. Stop

at our booth, and pick-up your

souvenir bookmark, made by our

members. While in the tent, visit

the host family display, featuring

the quilt depicting the life of the

Ebert Family. Kewaunee County

HCE helped make this quilt a

reality.

Our Nicaragua Sewing

supply collection dated July 22,

has been postponed until further

notice, because the warehouse in

Stevens Point is full. Watch for

further notice for a rescheduled

date.

Check with Robin Nelson

255-1357 to confirm dates and

times for biking and kayaking in

July and August. We look

forward to seeing all club

presidents August 8, at the

executive board meeting, and all

our members at the August 21

Fall FunFest at the Franklin

Town Hall. As usual, this a

potluck and Mari is looking

forward to grazing on all the

delightful varieties of food! By

August 14, sign up to attend the

Mason Jar Craft program on

August 28.

As we are writing this letter,

Judy & Mari are enjoying a

vacation with our husbands in

Branson, MO. We’ve seen some

great shows, stayed up late

playing games, had giggle

sessions, and LOTS of

food. Now, BACK TO FUN!!!

Our HCE newsletter is done!

Respectfully submitted,

School is Out for Summer! Is Your Child Ready to Stay

Home Alone?

Like many parents, you might be trying to decide if it is safe to

leave your school-age child home alone during the summer break.

Your child might be ready to stay home alone if they:

Indicate a desire and willingness to stay alone

Accepts responsibility and is able to make decisions inde-

pendently

Shows an awareness of what others need

For many children, these abilities appear between 9 and 12 years

of age. UW-Extension offers a free on-line class called Home

Alone. The class was developed to help you prepare your child

for self-care. Take the class together with your child and gain

confidence that they are ready to stay home alone.

Kewaunee County Resources for Families and Communities

A Resource Sharing event was held on

June 5, 2017 at the Kewaunee County

Administration Center. The event provided an

opportunity for community service providers to

share information about the resources and

services available to assist Kewaunee County

adults, children and families.

The Resource Sharing event brought

together representatives of the agencies and

organizations in a face-to-face format which

allowed many of them to meet in person for the

first time. More than half of the agencies that

provide assistance to Kewaunee County

residents are headquartered in surrounding

counties and do not have an office location in

Kewaunee County.

Creating awareness of resources and

sharing information with services providers is

important because informed providers can help

connect families with resources that they might

not otherwise find on their own. Job loss,

underemployment, family changes, and living

on a fixed income are just some of the reasons

that families might benefit from community

assistance programs like the ones shared at the

Resource Sharing event.

information shared included:

Congratulations High School Graduates!

Pictures, Pictures, Pictures

I know that we have some

great youth and adult

photographers in Kewaunee

County. Therefore, I am asking

for your help.

We are currently beginning to

compile the 2018 4-H Family

Calendar and are looking for

pictures to include in it. The

pictures should, of course, be

taken of 4-H youth and 4-H

activities. We will include as

many pictures as possible.

Pictures can be e-mailed to me at

[email protected] or

dropped off at the UW-Extension

office, or mailed to Jill Jorgensen,

4-H Youth Development,

810 Lincoln St. Kewaunee, WI

54216.

Please mark the back of

EACH PHOTO with the youth

name, your name, address, and

phone number.
