* African American women are more likely to be diagnosed with advanced stages of the disease and also have the highest death rate.

Our Governing BodyA Foundation Board of Directors, consisting of up to 30 volunteer members, has general oversight of the business affairs and management of the Foundation. Several of these members have been on the Board since its inception.

The Board of Directors appoints an Executive Committee of 9 members which includes the

current President and immediate past President of the Foundation. The current President of the Foundation serves as the Chair of the Executive Committee. The Executive Committee, at its pleasure, may invite others to attend meetings on a regular basis or special event basis. Individuals typically invited on a regular basis are the Executive Director, Medical Director of the

Cancer Center and a recording Secretary.

The Board of Directors contracts with qualified physicians(s) to provide medical services for Cancer Center patients. The Board appoints one physician to act as the Medical Director. The Medical Director is responsible for the supervision of the medical staff and patient-

care decisions. The Executive Director is an employee of the Foundation appointed by the Board to oversee the day-to-day management of the Cancer Center and supervise its employees.

Our History and PurposeIn 1979, a group of local citizens met and with the assistance of the community, incorporated and raised the funds to construct our first facility. The corporate name is officially Community Cancer Foundation. We are a non-profit organization, doing business as the Community Cancer Center. To keep pace with the most

recent advancements in cancer treatment, we opened our new 39,000 square foot, state of the art, comprehensive cancer facility in June 2009.

The purpose of the Community Cancer Center Foundation is to construct, maintain and operate an outpatient facility for the care,

treatment, and rehabilitation of persons afflicted with cancer or related diseases.

The Foundation is organized exclusively for charitable, educational and scientific purposes. Our mission is to assist, encourage, promote and advance the best care, treatments

and rehabilitation of persons afflicted with cancer or related medical conditions.

Our purpose and mission should be carried out in the most pleasant manner possible, being aware that many of our patients are terminally ill.

CCC features a multi-million dollar state of the art linear accelerator. The photo above shows a view of the back of the machine. The photo at left shows a view of what the patient sees. This machine is capable of doing a cone-beam CT for patient localization using finite treatment delivery parameters. The devices on the treatment table are called vacloks, which are customized for each patient.

It is also the external-beam radiation treatment (EBRT) system used to treat all types of cancers. We have an HDR (high-dose-radiation)

Brachytherapy program treating breast and gynecological cancers. There is a relatively intense source of radiation inside a shielded case with tubes where the sources travel to “dwell” positions to deliver radiation to a specific area or cavity (i.e. breast lumpectomy cavity). The difference between HDR and EBRT is the intensity of the fractions the patient will receive at their visits to treat their cancer and the delivery system. Typical fractionation for EBRT breast is 180cGyX33 fractions and for HDR breast patient 340cGyX10 fraction. HDR is an internal treatment method needing an opening into the patient’s body to deliver the radiation and EBRT is delivered externally by rotating the machine around the patient to deliver the treatment. Not everyone is a candidate for HDR breast brachytherapy.

* Breast Cancer deaths have been decreasing since 1990 as detection and early treatment improve, reducing the mortality rate to 3 in 100.

Meet Our Patients

It didn’t matter that the tumor inside her breast was small, so far as tumors go. Sherry

Armstrong knew its potential and she was frightened by very idea that something inside her body had the potential of killing her.

Fortunately for Armstrong, she had been regular with her mammogram check-ups and the early discovery of that small tumor probably saved her life.

“They discovered the tumor in August of 1995 and the following

month I had a lumpectomy (they removed the lump from her breast),” she recalled. “I had to go through several weeks of radiation treatments at the Community Cancer Center. I remember how frightened I was and how the people at the center were so helpful and caring.”

She also remembers how convenient it was to have a cancer center so close to home. “I had to have daily radiation treatments for several weeks and I couldn’t imagine having to drive all the

way to Portland or Salem for those,” she said, “especially since it took me longer to drive there than the treatments actually took.”

Her experience as a patient was so positive that when a friend asked her to join the Community Cancer Center’s board of directors, Armstrong didn’t hesitate.“After I made it through my treatments a co-worker, Richard Morehead, asked me to join the board and nominated me in 1996,” she said. “When the Center was built I helped raise money, so I’ve always been a supporter.”

Unfortunately, Armstrong’s cancer would return. “In 2011 I was diagnosed with cancer in the same place it was before,” she recalled. “It was discovered during my regular mammogram and confirmed through an ultrasound and biopsy.”

The second time around posed more of a challenge because the skin over the tumor had reached its tolerance for additional radiation treatments. “They decided to give me another lumpectomy,”

Armstrong explained. “It wasn’t a good idea to do radiation in the same place, so they had a machine that could go under the skin and pinpoint the tumor. I was done in one day.”

What would Armstrong recommend? “At all costs, get a mammogram,” she said. “And pay attention to your body.”

This longtime Douglas County resident, mother to two daughters and grandmother to four continues to serve on the Center’s board of directors. “The Center is doing well,” she said. “We’re working on a lot of things and I’m proud that we’ve been able to build a state-of-the-art facility.”

Armstrong also volunteered as a “greeter” at the Center and supports the Breast Cancer Awareness cause through her regular Relay For Life walks.

Oregon has a very high rate of breast cancer incidence and early

detection can save lives! Through a major grant in southern Oregon, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, Oregon and SW Washington Affiliate seeks to ensure that all people, regardless of race, income, geographic location, or insurance status have access to screening, quality breast cancer treatment and support services.

What is Southern Oregon SCREEN?

Southern Oregon SCREEN is a regional grass roots promotion of an inter-community women’s health network of dedicated volunteers to promote breast health in rural cities. The Southern Oregon SCREEN program is powered by a five year grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Oregon and SW Washington Affiliate, designed to provide breast health education and resources for early screening throughout southern Oregon – specifically the message that early detection saves lives

– to the women of Douglas, Coos, Curry, Jackson and Josephine counties.

Promotion of the Southern Oregon SCREEN program includes providing breast health and early screening education and resources for local facilities for mammograms. It provides a list of direct contacts for breast health coordinators and/or patient navigators in their areas and resources available for those needing additional assistance.

What is a Community Program Manager? The SCREEN Community Program Manager is responsible for the coordination of the SCREEN project throughout southern Oregon by meeting or presenting with local media, service groups, local chambers, clubs and

organizations to discuss the SCREEN program and event promotion throughout southern Oregon. Additionally the Program Manager recruits volunteers within each community who aid in the program community presentation. Angelia Freeman is the Community Program Manager for Southern Oregon SCREEN.

Meet Our Patients

Alice Turner had always been good about regular checkups. She had a family

doctor who encouraged her to pay attention to her body’s signals and to make sure she had annual breast exams.

So even though a 2009 mammogram showed no signs of trouble, she suspected something was amiss.

“My breast was sore,” she recalled. “They even did an ultrasound

and found nothing, but my breast continued to bother me.”Doctors would later discover that the source of Turner’s soreness was a tumor and that it was getting larger.

“The idea that I had this thing growing inside my body kind of wiped me out mentally,” she said. “All I knew for sure was that I wanted it out.”

In April, of 2010 doctors removed at least part of the tumor in a procedure known as a “lumpectomy.”

Oftentimes, however, the cancerous cells have spread beyond what doctors refer to as reasonable “margins” and more drastic measures are needed. “I had a needle biopsy that showed cancer, so I opted to have them take the breast off,” she remembered. “It showed up in the first sentinel node and also in another node toward the end.”The sentinel lymph node is the hypothetical first lymph node, or group of nodes draining a cancer. The breast removal procedure is called a mastectomy and some women choose to remove both breasts to eliminate any chance of a recurrence.

Turner’s next stop following surgery was the Community Cancer Center, where her daughter, Tammy Hagedorn works as a director of clinical services. That’s where cancer patients go for both chemotherapy and radiation.

“I was diagnosed at Mercy and treated at the Community Cancer Center,” said Turner, reflecting on the unique relationship between both Roseburg medical facilities. “My experience with both was amazing.”

Turner, who moved to Roseburg with her husband from Pacific City (on the Oregon coast) in 2007 to be close to their daughter, soon discovered the benefits of having a cancer center so close to home.“They are an amazing team,” she recalled. “You feel devastated when you have gone through the surgery, but they were so supportive. I had a lot of questions and they answered every one. They made me feel comfortable. They didn’t make me feel like a one-boob person walking around half naked. I was someone they were trying to help.”

Turner said she couldn’t imagine how difficult her journey might have been had they not moved. “We’d moved to Roseburg just a year or two before I was diagnosed and if we were still living in Pacific City I would have had to go all the way to Salem or Portland for my treatments,” she reflected. “Having a center like we have here is wonderful.”

A recent update from the American Institute of Cancer Research (AICR)

has confirmed that weight control, regular physical activity and limitation of alcohol, are the foundations of a lifestyle to reduce breast cancer risk. Weight control is identified as one of the most important steps to reduce risk. Greater body fat, especially after menopause, can increase levels of estrogen and the risk of hormone sensitive breast cancer. The evidence is strong that physical activity and healthy body weight reduces the risk of all breast cancer

for women pre and post menopausal.Diet and nutrition play a huge role in attaining and maintaining a healthy body weight, while providing essential nutrients necessary to support a strong immune system and general good health.A healthy diet is balanced and varied and should include;• Lean protein distributed over the course of the day. Include fish at least twice a week, in particular Salmon or Tuna fish that are good sources of omega-3-fatty acids.• Vegetables, cover half

of your plate (twice a day) with dark green, orange and brightly colored vegetables. Cruciferous vegetables may have an especially protective effect against some types of breast cancer. • Eat fruit rather than drink it. This way you get fiber and less simple sugars.• Whole grains and fiber (at least 25 grams of fiber a day)• Non-fat or low fat dairy to provide calcium, vitamin D and magnesium• Water

Emerging evidence cautions against the over- use of dietary

supplements, especially if you already have cancer. A healthy well planned diet should provide all the essential nutrients that you need. Dietary supplements should be taken to treat a documented deficiency or to promote another aspect of health, for example calcium and vitamin D for bone health.
