WINE CLUB In France on the third Thursday of November there is a celebration to promote the first wine of the vintage. The new wine is called, appropriately, Beaujolais Nouveau. Millions of cases of the vinuous infants are shipped around the world for parties to celebrate the new vintage. It so happens that our next tasting on November 15th is the third Friday of the month just a day after the release of Beaujolais Nouveau. So we’ll celebrate along with the rest of the world (French food! Oui!) but we won’t make you drink those silly Nouveaus. (Well, maybe one. J) What we’ll do instead is sample some of the finest exam-ples in the world, like Foillard and Lapierre. Come and join us. We will meet at 7:00 pm on the third Friday of the month November 15th at the Clubhouse. Please make your reservation by November 9th by calling Jim Macmil-lan at 371-2933 or by email at [email protected]. We buy our wine in advance so we will stop taking reserva-tions at 50 people. The cost will be $20 per taster and please bring an appetizer or dessert to share with the group. You will need 6 glasses for the tasting. At our October 19th tasting of Barolo/Nebbiolo wine we had 56 tasters. The group rated the wine as follows: 2008 Ruggeri Corsini Barolo $45.00 2007 Pio Cesare Barolo $65.00 2007 Paolo Scavino Barolo $55.00 2009 Damilano Nebbiolo $14.00 2009 Ruggeri Corsini, Nebbiolo $20.00 2010 Ca’ del Baio Nebbiolo $18.00 And, coming up: December 15th (Saturday) Christmas Masquerade.

YACHT CLUB CONT’D es: Spring Cruise to Sucia Island, Commodore’s Cruise to the San Juan Islands, and Vice Commodore’s Cruise to Saltspring and Vancouver Islands. We had four meetings and social events: New Members Open House (party), Spring and Fall business meetings (parties), and a salmon bake (party). We also had four boating-related events: Opening day, vessel safety day, West Marine pizza and shopping night, and a gigantic raft-out (party). Finally, new members are always welcome in the BBV Yacht Club. We have a lot of fun while we enjoy the boating lifestyle. We go on cruises together to foreign lands, enjoy social events and raft-outs, and we get a nifty club roster and a very cool engraved name badge. If you are new to the Village, or new to boating, or for whatever reason you have not looked into joining the yacht club before, this could be your year. The initiation fee is $25 and the annual dues are $25. Why wait for spring? Do it now. If you join now, you can come to the Yacht Club Christmas Party. For more info, call Dennis at 393-3648, or download the membership application at http://www.bbvyc.org/members.php. Fair winds, Chris Doutre, Rear Commodore

YACHT CLUB As the boating season continued to wrap up, October was a big month for your yacht club. On the 6th, we held our Fall General Meeting at the clubhouse and elected our new Bridge officers for the 2013 season. Also, by the time you read this, the Commo-dore’s Ball will have been held, with a first-ever (as far as I know) western theme, in an hon-

est-to-goodness chicken barn with, I kid you not, line-dancing! And a real western band! And authentic western BBQ! And free beer! Stay tuned. The Fall General Meeting was much more than a club business meeting. It was also a gourmet chili feed and potluck bash hosted by Jenise and Agnes and their team of party wizards. They presented two flavors of delicious chili, with all the fixin’s, and the members complemented these main dishes with their favorite potluck salads and desserts. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make this a very special event. Following the cognac and cigars, and after the smoke had cleared, your newly-elected Bridge officers emerged as follows: Dennis Dun-can, Commodore; Chris Doutre, Rear Commodore; Mar-ion Falk, Treasurer; Jenise Stone, Secretary. Gordon Thompson is our outgoing Commodore and will assume the rank of Junior Staff Commodore. I’d like to personal-ly thank Gordon, and his wife Denise, for their outstand-ing leadership and hard work this year. Yes, we all worked together to put on a great yacht club program this year, but I know that Gordon and Denise put in a monumental amount of extra time and effort, and they deserve our thanks. Now for the bad news: Once again this year, we are with-out a Vice Commodore elect. We need this position filled to ensure the future health of the club. So, if you are an active yacht club member, eager to make a difference, please consider joining the Bridge. On that note, I’d like to especially thank Dennis Duncan who stepped in last year to fill this most-important position, and his wife Ire-ne, who worked alongside Dennis to help make this year special for all of us. Speaking of Dennis, he has asked me to include a brief review of our 2012 season. We had three excellent cruis-

GOLF NEWS 2012 BBV Golf Club Champions crowned – While the 2012 BBV Golf Club Championship took place on Sep-tember 22 – 23, after the deadline for submitting copy for the October Bulletin. But, old news is better than no news! Here are the 2012 winners:

Men’s Champion (low gross): Jim Toomey Ladies Champion (low gross): Holly Hilton Men’s low net win-ner: Dymon Nycon Ladies low net win-ner: Helen Hilton Congratulations to

our Club Championship winners and to all who partici-pated! We all had fun celebrating their achievements at the Awards Dinner while listening and dancing to the music of Double Trouble (Steve Brand and Mark Isen-hour). Go for glory and join in on the fun next year. 2012 – Another great year! – From the season-opening Duffers Scramble to the last rounds played before the Golf Shop closed, it was a very good year for golf at BBV. Rounds played increased, as did green fee revenue. The Junior Golf Program was, again, a huge success. Fun tournaments, like the USA vs. Canada match play tourna-ment and home-and-away course matches with the Rasp-berry Ridge Men’s Golf Club brought renewed competi-tive energies to the BBV golf community. The Golf Shop, with its merchandise, big screen TVs, and The Chill Out Cafe’s food and beverage service, became a popular hangout for golfers and non-golfers alike. Thank you, Joe Holdridge, Spencer Holdridge, and Al Koch. (Consider contacting Joe at (360) 752-3337 to get your name on his email list.) Meanwhile, the golf course con-tinued to improve. The greens were declared to be among the best in Whatcom County, if not the best! With minimal resources, great things were accomplished by staff. Please thank Steve Brand (Greenskeeper) and Kenny Schroeder (Assistant Greenskeeper), and all the BBV Maintenance staff and volunteers who help make our golf course more enjoyable for us all. Golf course revenue and play stats’ look good – 2012 golf statistics (through about October 15) were:

CONT’D GOLF NEWS Passes sold: Annual memberships, 229; 10-round punch cards, 42; Sponsored Golf Passes, 4 Golf fees collected: $87,900

Green fees, $34,629; Memberships, $43,400; Cart trail, $5,235; 10-round punch cards, $4,636

Rounds played: 9881 (9-hole, 6638; 18-hole, 3243) Members played 78% of the rounds, guests played 22%; 39% of the rounds were played on weekends, 61% on weekdays; 67% were 9-hole rounds, 33% were 18-hole rounds

Team BBV-USA edges Team BBV-Canada again – On September 30, with golfers dressed in national colors and flags fluttering off golf carts, Team USA rallied to a narrow six point victory (47 to 41) over Team Canada in the 2nd Annual BBV Can-Am “Ryder Cup” match. The outcome was in doubt throughout the match, as neither team knew where they stood overall. Only when all scores were turned in, and the final tally made, did the Team USA learn of their repeat victory. In response to chants of “USA, USA” the cry of “wait ‘til next year” was heard. But, after hotdogs, hamburgers, a beer or two and some good-natured ribbing, everyone went away happy. But, wait until next year! Golf lab winter league kickoff tournament results – Once again, Joe’s Professional Golf Lab & Indoor Golf Center used the BBV golf course to kickoff its annual indoor golf league…outdoors. A field of 21 two-person teams went at it on October 6 and, while our visitors en-joyed themselves, our BBV golfers did themselves proud. The winners were:

Low gross individual: 1st – Jim Toomey (62); 2nd – Dan Douet (64) Low net individual: 1st Jim Toomey (59); 2nd (Tie) – Jim King (guest) and Sherry Rye (60) Low net team winners: 1st – Mike and Dan Douet (51); 2nd – Bob and Pat Simpson (53)

2012 match play winners – Jim Toomey outlasted Dick Duffy (three up with two holes to go) to become the 2012 Men’s Golf Club match play winner. Congratu-lations, Jim! He joined Pat Simpson, 2012 Ladies Golf Club match play winner. BBV Men’s Club tops Raspberry Ridge – In a home-and-away match play competition, the BBV Men’s Club bested their Raspberry Ridge counterparts by a mere two

CONT’D GOLF NEWS points. On October 3, the Raspberry Ridge men won on their home course 36.5 to 23.5. But, on October 10, BBV turned the tables by winning at home 40.5 to 25.5. The two-day combined score was BBV 64, Raspberry Ridge 62. A perpetual trophy is in the works, with the winner keeping possession of it for a year. Meanwhile, the event was good for each community and involved great com-petition, food, and the awards ceremony made for much fun and camaraderie. It looks like a healthy rivalry is in store for us in the future. Sponsored Golf Pass program extended – At the rec-ommendation of the Golf Committee, the BBV Board of Directors extended the Sponsored Golf Pass (SGP) in-definitely, subject to a yearly evaluation. Priced at the cost of an Annual “Single” Golf Pass + 10%, the SGP offers excellent value to the right person. If you know a “trustworthy” golfer outside the Village and you are will-ing to sponsor them as a guest, this is a great opportunity to bring additional revenue to the Village and enable someone you know to experience the best in golf course play and golf-community camaraderie we can offer. Golf Committee officers and acknowledgments – The final 2012 meeting of the Golf Committee was held on October 11. Outgoing chair Jim Macmillan wel-comed the following individuals to officer positions for 2013: Jim Toomey (Chair), Bill Quick (Vice Chair), Ron Bogen (Treasurer). Many thanks to all those who served on this year’s Golf Committee and volunteered during the year. “New” golf club in spring 2013 – You’ve heard rumors this year, but it’s finally coming. Next spring, our existing golf groups (Men’s Golf, Friday Ladies Golf, and Friday Night Couples Golf) will retain their existence, but will fall under the umbrella of a new, official BBV Golf Club. The new organization will have a status much like that of the BBV Yacht Club and the latter’s relationship to the Marina Committee. Golf “social” activities, such as the annual Golf Fund Raiser, Club Championship, and other tournaments will fall under the purview of the new BBV Golf Club, which will operate independent of the BBV Golf Committee. The latter will continue to address golf course maintenance, development, budget, rules/regulations, and the like, much as the Marina Committee addresses marina issues. A community-wide meeting will be held in April or May to introduce and fine-tune the

CONT’D GOLF NEWS new Golf Club and to elect its first-ever officers. We in-vite you to be involved in this new venture. New tee-box granite markers – By next spring, new engraved granite tee-box markers, paid for by prior Fund Raiser allocations, will be installed. They will replace the venerable and well-worn hand-me-down cedar tee box signs we obtained years ago from Lake Padden and adapted to our course. Not one to pass up a fund raising opportunity, Jim Macmillan came up with the idea of “selling” the opportunity to put one’s name on a marker as a permanent legacy of their support of BBV golf. As a result, 15 people donated $200 each. These added contri-butions can now fund further golf course enhancements and golf programs. Contributors will be acknowledged later but, for now, thank you all. Fund Raiser monies committed – The following pro-grams, material purchases and projects will benefit from Golf Fund Raiser monies in the coming year: Support Junior Golf Program – $ 50/participant “scholarship” match (est. $2,000) Purchase walking mower (est. $2,500) Beautify #3 and #5 tee boxes (est. $1,000) Purchase sod to upgrade chipping area/greens (est. $1,000) Purchase golf mats for chipping area ($?) Honor Box now in effect – The Golf Shop is now closed, so the Honor Box is “open”. Whenever the Golf Shop is closed, a $10 day-fee must be paid by all players who are not Annual Golf Club card carrying members. “Honor Box” instructions are found outside the Golf Shop door. Persons found playing the course without the appro-priate “bag tag” are subject to fines and/or loss of BBV privileges. Not paying (stealing?) $10, is just not worth the risk, so don’t take the chance! Winter play reminders – Please respect the delicate condition of golf course at this time of the year. DO keep motorized golf carts on cart paths. Pull carts should be kept at least 10 feet off greens and tee boxes…farther if conditions are particularly soggy. If frost is present, DO NOT start play until the frost is gone. And, remem-ber to replace divots and repair ball marks. Stay dry, warm, and enjoy! See you on the tee at BBV!

MANAGER’S REPORT

NOVEMBER 2012

It is hard to believe that November will soon be upon us. Where has the year gone? Holiday seasons abound over the next few months, so I am hoping this finds you and finds you well. Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Year’s and other family and religious functions occur during these two months. My hope is for everyone to enjoy the holiday seasons with friends and family and enjoy good health and prosperity.

The annual Membership Meeting will be held the first Friday of November at North Bay Christ the King Church by the Waterslides. Please vote on the 2013 budget and attend the meeting to find out the results. Looking forward to seeing all of your smiling faces there.

As most of you are aware, the Front Gate Project has begun. So far, so good. Thanks for your patience getting through the gate. The Security staff is doing a great job so far in moving traffic in and out; sometimes doubling up to maximize throughput. The conditions this time of year can be less than perfect. Standing in the rain and wind can be difficult at times, so please be aware of their plight. Problems come up daily, so we are all prepared to react quickly to most unex-pected situations. Thanks for all your assistance during this project.

The Marina Launch Dock Repair will be taking place during the low tides in November. Looks to be about November 18th. The Launch Ramp will be closed for a few days during this project, so if you plan on launching in mid-November, please let me know and we will try to make accommodations for you to moor instead of launching for those few days.

Staff has been out in the Slough today getting a pathway made through the logs and muck so the water will flow from the ditch and out into the bay. The permit to keep the Slough open was changed last year to allow both Public Works and Birch Bay Village to be able to keep this area clean. It costs us more in labor and equipment, but allows us to react faster to any problems that may arise. Last year this proved so successful that we did not experience the flooding along Salish that occurred in the past. The staff has also been in the Beaver Pond to extricate some of the debris that might have kept the flow from Birch Point Road to the Marina from backing up. As most of you may know, waters from Birch Point Road, the vacant property to the west of the Village, and all the stormwater on the west side of the Village enters the Bea-ver Pond and then into the Marina. During downpours, this can be a huge volume of water and the last thing we need is for the culverts under the roads to plug up causing flooding of sections of the Beaver Pond. I think it is important that you know that we try to be pro-active in some of these matters to keep the Village functioning as well as possible.

The Board of Directors’ has just passed a new Policy Resolution concerning Late Fees and Delinquent Payments. A copy of the newest Resolution will be included in your 2013 Dues notice. The twice yearly Late Fee ($125) has been changed to a 10% Late Fee. The other side of the new resolution states that you will be asked to meet with the Board sooner con-cerning Liens and ‘Members not in Good Standing’ sanctions. Also, beginning at the first of the year, all those making alternative arrangements on paying dues and fees will need to complete a payment agreement. Please stop by the Office to complete the paperwork by the end of January. Thanks.

The Clubhouse flooring project has been completed and the new flooring is in place. Please remember to check that all tables and chairs have rubber feet before setting up so that the floor doesn’t scratch. Always put something under any-thing you may be bringing in to use such as bandstands, tables, etc. that could cause damage to the floor. Mats have been purchased for both interior and exterior door areas to wipe your shoes. The gravel from the parking lots could be a major potential problem. Your assistance is appreciated. In evaluation the lighting now that the carpet has been replaced has indicated adding additional lights to the light bars. The addition of two higher intensity lights will be added to each light bar. Sound attenuation tests are scheduled.

Happy trails to those heading south for the winter. We look forward to your return in the spring. Think of us when you check the weather forecasts during the winter.
