ResearchfromtheChattanoogaAreaChamberofCommerceindicatestherearecurrently15,000jobs
thatcannotbefilledbyHamiltonCountyresidentsbasedoneducationalrequirements.Additionally,the
HarvardGraduateSchoolofEducationfoundthatamajorreasonstudentsfailtocompleteatwo-orfour-
yearcollegeprogramisthat”toomanycan’tseeaclear,transparentconnectionbetweentheirprogramof
studyandtangibleopportunitiesinthelabormarket.”
Thesolution?STEP-UPChattanooga,arobustinternshipprogramforjuniorsandseniorsinHamilton
Countypublicschoolsdesignedtoaddressthechallengesfacedbybothbusinessesandstudentsina
complex,changingglobaleconomy.
Thisspring,STEP-UPChattanoogarecruitedandprovidedwork-readinesstrainingtomorethan100
localhighschoolstudents.Thissummer,morethan90ofthosestudentswerehiredtoworkinapaid
internshipinoneofmorethan45companies.Throughouttheexperience,studentswillreceivesupport
andfeedbackfromSTEP-UPstaffandsupervisorsattheirplaceofemployment.

BusinesseshostingSTEP-UPinternswillbuildrelationshipswithapooloftalented,diversefuture
employeeswhilefillingjobvacanciesanddemonstratingacommitmenttoimprovingthelivesofat-risk
youth.Studentswillhaveopportunitiestoexplorecareerswhiledevelopingworkskills,aswellasto
networkwithadultprofessionalswhocanhelpthemachieveeducationalandprofessionalgoals.

Educatorvoiceissooftenoverlookedindevelopingpublic–particularlyeducational–policy.Our
teachersaretrustedleadersandexpertsintheirfieldandextremelyqualifiedtoadvocateforand
informthepolicieswhichaffectourschoolsandcommunity.
PEFispartneringwiththeBenwoodFoundationtodevelopa16-monthPolicyFellowshiptosupporttwenty
classroomteachersin drivingchangefromtheinsideout,aswellaselevatingteachervoiceandtheteaching
profession.
PolicyFellowswilldelveintolocal,stateandfederalpoliciesthataffectstudentsinHamiltonCounty.
Fellowswilllearnfromeducationalandcommunityleaders,workingtogetherasacohortinadvocating
forpoliciessupportingtheirstudents.ThescopeofPolicyFellowswillexpandbeyondthatofothersuch
fellowshipsbyexploringissuesoutsideofschools,suchaspoverty,crimeandothersocialissueswhich
directlyaffectstudentsandfamiliesinHamiltonCounty.
Fromvisitingthecountyjailtowritinganop-ed,PolicyFellowswillprovideteacherswithatrulyunique
experience.PartgraduateseminarandpartLeadershipChattanooga,thecohortwillmeetmonthlyto
learnaboutpoliciesandourcommunity,todeveloptheskillsnecessaryforeffectiveadvocacyandto
takeactioninchangingChattanoogaforthebetter.
