Creating graphicsStudents from Kangan VCAL ( Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) and IEC ( Indigenous Education Centre) create images related to ‘home, learning and aspiration”. 1. Drafting stage About 6 - 8 weeks, one session a week.

The Materials used will be pencil and paper but also experimenting with ply wood and paint. 2. A master drawing will be created by Ann locating and linking images. Importantly colours will be decided upon as the fence will be completely painted.

This plan will be reviewed by Project Group, Teachers and students.

Budget/ Materials/ Equipment Paper, paints, brushes ply = $300-500.

This will give us sample pots of colour

The Marine ply •Ply will be to be supplied cut to length, OR cut to size by the builders. There may be a cost for this if done by the supplier.

•Carpentry students can cut the circles in the ply ( about 7 sections with three circles each), if they have a CAD drawing.

•Section are 2.1 high 1.2 wide. These panels need to be stored on site.

•Approximately 100 Pieces of ply measuring 1.2 wide and 30 60 or 90 high.

•Panels are supplied in 2.4 x1.2 x 53 sections

• Both ply types, below, have “two good faces” to suit the inside and outside of the fenceBB grade 18 ml = $126 per sheet = $6,678AA hoop pine 19 ml = $350 per sheet = $18,550 ( Prices from Bowens Timber North Melbourne) ( About a third of section will be slats so possibly a third less ply will be needed)

NOTE: Use a vehicle will be required to move panels from site to storage etc and for moving the slats form Richmond to Broadmeadows

Preparing the ply • Area for working on the panels and for storage needs

to be found on site at Kangan

• Panels need to be stacked and sanded and numbered for assembling

• The reverse side of the panels need to be painted too

• 1.2 (width) x 1.8 (height i.e. 2.1 less slats) x 54 (no of panels) = 116 square meters for each side of fence x 2 coats

• = 464 sq meters • I liter = approx.12 sq meters = 38 tins @

approximately $32 a liter = $1216

• Plus paint for the design which will take up about a fifth of the surface area so about 8-10 tins= $320

• Peripherals: Rollers, trays, drop cloths, tape / labels, brushes

• Stain and paint cannot be used together. There is no

semi transparent paint.

Painting the panels•The students images will be scaled up by : gridding up or , photocopying and scaling up design , chalking the back and tracing over.

•Painting the panels: students will require considerable space to work .

•Panels measuring 1.2 x 90/ 80 or 30 cm will be will be assigned to students.

•Students will work to a master plan of the designAnn will create this once the students designs are completed. It will agreed by the Project group teachers and students.

•Once or two coats of colour will be laid down first and then the couloured designs painted on top .The panels will need two coats.

•There will be a lot of painting ! As in simple application of colour

Panel work• Painted panels will need to be stored• The builder will set the upright poles and rails (if rails are required)• The builder, with carpentry students, will fix the panels within the 53

sections between the uprights• Cost will be fixtures i.e. rivets every 15 cm(?) • The panels will abut each other except when alternatively fixed at the

back then fixed at the front.

Capping tops of panels for weatherproofing.Q. When does the capping go on the panels? In each section there are two or three tops that need to be capped. The panels need to have slats fixedflush against them. So capping would need to be done early on before this stage occurs? Q. Will the builder and do this ?

Positioning the panels

• Panels are fixed to the uprights in sequence• Builder and students• About 100 Panels

Fixing the slats

• Builder and carpentry students will attach the slats

• This could be done before the apron is added which would make access to the panels easier.

• Slats secured and evenly spaced to the design.

• Preparation: collection and sorting of slats

• Slats are not painted or stained but left as they are.

Creating the Apron

•Creating the Apron on site to match the slope of the land•Apron will need to be painted on site too ( ?)•Apron would be capped on site as the apron has no slats abutting it and other panels. If a cap required , that is.

Budget/ Equipment •Rivets•Capping (?) •Saw•Labour

Finish •The outside will be decorated and painted•The inside will be painted •Anti-graffiti surface can then be applied.
