1030 | Throwing Skills: Vessel Forms

John Nelson & Lyn Woods

Focus on expanding and refining throwing skills while concentrating on specific thrown forms. Presentations and discussion will help students understand how to throw and construct vessels that integrate form with function. Note: Section A will focus on the handle and how it visually responds to a vessel form. Section B will focus on the foot and how it visually responds to bowl form. Both sections will spend time on these two important elements that make both a cup and a bowl a pleasure to use. Students will also be introduced to an array of surface decoration techniques and how to load and unload downdraft gas kilns. Prerequisite: Students must have had at least two introductory-level throwing classes.

1130 | Musical Instruments

Jared Theis

In this class we will learn how to make musical instruments utilizing clay and other materials such as wood, metal, wire, and found objects. From flutes and other wind instruments to stringed instruments with ceramic resonators, marimbas, and chime instruments played with mallets. Students will have a lot of freedom in determining what kind of instruments to make. We will also look at historical and contemporary examples of art that has been inspired by music and explore music that has been inspired by the visual arts. Students can use either handbuilding and/or wheelthrowing techniques to construct their work; however, demonstrations will not cover basic building techniques but rather the technicalities of sound and incorporations of mixed media. All work will be fired in the low-temperature range. Prerequisite: Students must have had at least two introductory classes and be confident with their clay construction techniques. See *Ceramic Note.

1131 | Folded Vessels

Rebecca Andersen

Using paper patterns and templates, students will construct handbuilt functional vessels. Patterns and templates will aid students in visualizing the ceramic form in new ways and allows for adjustment of angles, planes, and structure before the building process begins. Demonstrations will cover forming and slab building techniques. Students will be encouraged to use slips and underglazes to create complementary patterns for their work; the class will work with high temperature clay and glazes in the natural gas kiln atmosphere. Prerequisite: Students must have had a minimum experience of one course in both handbuilding and wheelthrowing. See *Ceramic Note.

1066 | Studio Concepts: Series & Critique

Jared Theis

In this class, students will challenge themselves to produce a coherent body of work addressing concept and the design principles. At the end of the session, a formal critique will be held to analyze the work produced during the session. Throughout the term, a series of critique exercises will be used to develop the skills needed to critically voice and write about the work being viewed. All students will need to spend time with the loading, firing, and unloading of their work. This class is open to both handbuilding and wheelthrowing techniques; however, there will be no demonstrations. Instead, there will be weekly discussion on topics including setting up a studio for individual practice, equipment installation, setting up a website, researching opportunities in the field, and exhibiting work in galleries. Prerequisite: Students should have a minimum of one intermediate handbuilding or one intermediate throwing class. See *Ceramic Note.

1034 | Totem Structures

Cecilia Castro-Hancock

Students in this class will use handbuilding or wheelthrowing techniques to create stackable forms for building a personal totem-like structure. Students will be guided in finding a cohesive theme, whether it’s abstract, figurative or symbolic. There will be demonstrations on installation techniques and materials needed to complete the project; however, students should be comfortable with their chosen constructing technique. Each student will create one structure with a minimum of three sections and a maximum of seven and not exceeding six-feet in total height. Students will purchase their own installation materials in addition to clay. Prerequisite: Students must have had at least two previous handbuilding classes. See *Ceramic Note.

1135 | Alternative Cooking with Clay Pots

Linda Perez

Clay pots made it possible to transform cooking from the simple roasting of foods over fire or hot coals to a whole new expanded concept. With clay pots, new and different foods could be cooked, especially those requiring liquids such as grains or legumes. This class will pay homage to the cooking vessel and recreate some of the more common and important ones from egg bakers to cazuelas, or casseroles, and bean pots to tagines. We’ll learn to use them, as well, by having not one but two Saturdays of preparing class-selected recipes in the pots we make and enjoying the results together. Who knows, you might end up with a family cooking treasure that gets passed down from generation to generation. This class will be using “Kitchen Clay 762” by Standard Ceramic Company which will be available for purchase from the studio. Prerequisite: Students must have either intermediate handbuilding and/or wheelthrowing experience. See *Ceramic Note.

Cartooning, or visual storytelling, is more than just an enjoyable indulgence of the imagination; it speaks to interests such as editorial illustration, children’s book illustration, comic strips, comic books, and storyboarding. Its various forms combine caricature, figure drawing, and illustration through the medium of ink and watercolor on paper. Instruction will focus on character development, illusions of movement, sequential staging, setting management, inking, and coloring—all aimed towards the refinement of the student’s narratives and ideas. Bring a 9 by 12-inch sketchbook and a sharpened pencil to the first class.

9075 | Introduction to Faux Bois Cement Sculpting

Donald Tucker

Faux Bois, or “false wood,” is a well known art form in San Antonio. These three-dimensional sculptural representations of wood or wooden objects employ a steel and stucco lath armature which is then coated with cement-based media. Tooling of the final cement coat creates the illusion of wood grain and bark texture. This five-day intensive will provide the basic skills, techniques, and information necessary for the creation of decorative and functional cement forms. Finishing options and coloring techniques will also be covered. Each student will construct and finish a small project of his or her design. Includes materials; please see the SSA website for a list of suggested supplies.

9076 | Advanced Faux Bois Sculpting

Donald Tucker

This class deals only with the use of the unique neat Portland paste finishing formulations that distinguish the more highly detailed works associated with El Trabajo Rustico. This mixture is very demanding and even considered “impossible” to employ by many experts, but when mastered, can yield a level of detail comparable to most sculpting clays. Since none of the basic construction considerations are covered during this class, it is highly recommended that students possess a fundamental familiarity with armature development and sculpting, as well as a working knowledge of basic cement formulating and mixing, if they are to get the most from this course.

Wed – Fri, Jun 6 – 8 | 9:30am – 4:30pm | Sculpture Studio | Santikos BuildingTuition: $350 (Members: $335) | 3 sessions | Please register by May 18

DONALD TUCKER was trained as a commercial illustrator, but left the advertising business to become a full-time studio artist. As a sculptor, he specializes in creating large-scale works in ferrocement employing the faux bois tradition. Tucker is considered a leading authority on the technique and teaches workshops nationwide.
