2. Confirmation: You will receive a confirmation and a receipt of payment within two weeks of registering. If you have an e-mail on file, confirmation will be received electronically.

3. Cancelations: The college may cancel courses due to low enrollment before the course begins. If you register for a course and it is canceled, you will be notified and you may choose to receive a refund or apply your course fee to another course if space is available. If the college closes due to inclement weather or an instructor needs to cancel a session, a make-up day will be scheduled and registrants will be notified of change.

4. Refunds: You will be eligible for a full refund if you drop a course within three business days before the first session of the course. If you drop a course fewer than three business days before the course, fees will not be refunded.

FITNESS CENTER BASICS JANUARY 6-APRIL 27 |$75 Enjoy full access to Kalamazoo Valley’s Wellness & Fitness Center (WFC), Free Weight Room and Open Swim time in the Pool during regularly scheduled hours. Fitness Cen-ter employees are available to explain and demonstrate the multiple pieces of cardio, strength and flexibility equipment. Participants are encouraged to try out the various exercise programs installed by the manufacturer on each type of machine.

SPANISH FOR TRAVELERS MARCH 9-APRIL 29 | Mondays and Wednesdays, 11:15 a.m.-1 p.m. | $175Are you traveling to a Spanish-speaking country for work or pleasure, maybe approaching a humanitarian trip (medical, home-building, mission, etc.)? In this course you will learn about popular traditions, customs, beliefs, values and superstitions of different Spanish-speaking countries. You will be able to use targeted language to help get through airports and use public transportation, learn vocabulary that relates to food and drinks of specific countries, and have knowledge of some healthcare issues in case of an illness or to work with people that have illnesses and need medical attention.

Students should have at least one semester of college Spanish, or two semesters of high school Spanish, or have previous knowledge and background with Spanish. Not designed for elementary language students.

HOW TO USE YOUR IPHONE AND IPAD MAY 21 | Thursday, 6-8 p.m. | $30Are you thinking about switching to an iPhone or have one and aren’t quite sure how to operate it? This course is for you! This program is designed for individuals interested in learning how to use the operating system on Apple mobile devices (iPhone or iPad). Students will be introduced to basic iOS navigation, popular apps included with a new device, and common setting descriptions in an office or personal setting.

3D PRINTING WORKSHOP FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTSTBD3D Printing Camp is a new media workshop for middle school and high school age students to receive the fundamentals of 3D printing creation and printing. Upon Completion, participants will learn to use a Wacom tablet, be able to 3D sculpt models in Autodesk Meshmixer, and prepare and print their own 3D models.

Participant must have knowledge and know how to use a Mac or PC, be able to navigate the internet, and have a personal GMAIL account set-up with enough space for cloud storage.

INTRO TO PHOTOSHOP FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTSMAR 1-29 | Sundays, 1–4 p.m. | $300 Participants will learn to navigate, export, create art, and design in Photoshop, use every tool in the tool bar, and learn how to upload to a Behance Account. You must have knowledge and be able to use a Mac or PC, know how to navigate the internet, and have a personal GMAIL account with available cloud storage.

BASIC ROBOTICS FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTSMAR 21&28 | Saturdays, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m | $300 This class is for middle school through high school students who are interested in learning basic robot functions or thinking about pursuing a career after graduating in robotics. In this hands-on course you will learn how to safely operate a 6-Axis FANUC robot and manually operate it in various modes such as Joint & World. You will also become familiar with opening and editing programs, commanding I/O, work with position registers, as well as creating some of their own basic material handling programs. With this baseline knowledge of programming, you will be able to follow the flow of a more complex program with subroutines. Lastly, you will learn how to use the functions within the teach pendant to aide in troubleshooting faults.

BUILD YOUR OWN ROBOTFEB 29 | Saturday, 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. | $125 Do you have a child who is interested in robots? Likes to build things? Have an interest in coding? If you answered yes to any of those questions, this class is for them! This 4 hour class geared for kids, age 8-14 will walk students through building their own robots from the ground up. Students will learn about the components being used and how they work together to build a working robot. Once the robots have been assembled, students will learn how to program them using mblocks, a block based coding platform. Each student will take home the robot they built, along with a USB drive with the required software so they can continue the fun at home.

Upon completion you will be able to paint the human form with observational accuracy, paint good figure-ground relationships, paint with various color palettes; including triadic, color as light, and complimentary. Students will need to provide the following supplies: Acrylic, oil, or watercolor paint, brushes, and rags. Instructor supply recommendations will be sent after registration.

INTRODUCTION TO ASL: PART 1MAR 2 - APR 20 | Mondays, 5:30-7 p.m. | $300This is part one of the three-part series of Introduction to ASL classes. Part One is an introduction to American Sign Language. It is designed to familiarize students with commonly used signs and finger spelling. Basic sign production and comprehension will be practiced during each meeting while learning about different aspects of the Deaf culture. Upon completion, you will have a basic knowledge of native or fluent signers, be able to reproduce the basic hand shapes and facial expressions and have a basic knowledge of fingerspelling and everyday signs. Participants in this class will explore the impact of ancestral plants, sources of materia medica, ethical and sustainable foraging techniques, as well as recipes for building a home apothecary. Participants will engage in on-campus plant walks to discuss bioregional, cultivated, and seasonal plants. Includes hands-on workshops.

Weather permitting, hands-on learning in the Food Innovation Center’s apiary is planned for each week, where students will evaluate hive strength, health, and how to support growing colonies. Classroom review will cover swarming, splits, integrated pest management, and a further focus on biology through the season and keeping bees in Southwest Michigan.

BUILD A NATIVE BEE HOTEL SATURDAY, MARCH 21 | 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. | $30Tunnel nesting bees are important pollinators for fruits and vegetables. Unlike honey bees, tunnel nesting bees do not live in colonies or move in swarms, so they are also often called solitary bees. Participants in this class will learn how to build and manage a bee hotel to support their local tunnel nesting bees. Each participant will be able to take home a bee hotel at the end of the class.

COMPOSTING 101THURSDAYS, APRIL 2 – APRIL 16 | 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. | $80Do you want to lower your carbon footprint and make your own organic fertilizer in one simple process? Learn to compost! Composting is the process for recycling wastes like kitchen scraps and grass clippings into an organic soil amendment that will help your garden retain moisture and support beneficial microorganisms. It’s a great alternative to putting food and yard wastes in landfills, where they generate methane. In this three-week course, participants will learn about the biology of composting, how it works, why it is important, how the final product can be used, and how to do it at home.

GROW BIOINTENSIVE 101 – MORE VEGETABLES, LESS WORK!WEDNESDAYS, APRIL 1 – APRIL 22 | 6. – 8 p.m. | $140Do you want to produce more fruits and vegetables in your garden with less effort, less water, and higher yield? Using principles from Permaculture, Organic Farming, and the Grow Biointensive model, this class will teach concepts and techniques for improving fertility and growth, minimizing weeds & pests, and maximizing production for your backyard garden. Participants will take home a biointensive cedar box for planting and a versatile gardening tool: the cobrahead.

INTRO TO BACKYARD POULTRYSATURDAY, FEBRUARY 22 | 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. | $10In this introductory class to keeping backyard poultry, the participants will learn the basics of raising chickens on a small scale, including breed selection, raising chicks, housing, handling, sanitation, and flock wellness.

INTRO TO PLANT PROPAGATION SATURDAY, APRIL 11 | 9 a.m. – 12p.m. | $50Join ValleyHUB farm lab coordinator Tip Maddux in this interactive hands-on session on how to propagate herbs, flowers, fruits and vegetables. Methods for growing different types of plants from seeds, leaf cuttings, and root divisions will be covered. Students will be able to take home several plants to grow in their homes and gardens. Strategies and ideas for successful growing in containers or in limited space will also be discussed.

MASTER RAIN GARDENER WEDNESDAYS, FEBRUARY 26 – MARCH 25 | 6. – 8 p.m. | $125When heavy rains fall, gardeners in urban and suburban areas can help manage stormwater! A Rain Garden is a garden bed planted in a shallow depression with specially adapted plants, which lets rainwater soak into the ground where it falls. This is an in-depth class that will teach you everything needed to create a living rain garden at your home or place of work and become a certified Master Rain Gardener. Co-hosted by the Kalamazoo River Watershed Council and Kalamazoo Nature Center in partnership with Kalamazoo Valley Community College.

MUSHROOM CULTIVATION CRASH COURSE SATURDAY, MAY 9 | 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. | $40Mushrooms are a great addition to any outdoor garden, and they could also very successfully grow in a basement or a spare room indoors. This 3-hour course on cultivating mushrooms at home will cover topics like deciding what kind of mushrooms to grow, where to obtain the cultures and materials needed for production, and how to create good environments for mushroom growth. Participants will get to take home inoculated substrates with oyster, shiitake and winecap spawns. Guidelines on how to monitor and support the mushroom growth will be provided. More in-depth mushroom cultivation class will be offered in the fall of 2020.

HANDS-ON POLYCULTURE BACKYARDS SATURDAY, MAY 23 | 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. | $20Do you want to turn your backyard into a sanctuary for pollinators and native plants, while also growing vegetables, herbs, and flowers from early spring to late fall? Learn the basic principles of polyculture gardening. In this class you will learn how to plan your new garden, how to select seeds, and plants, and how to maintain it for many years to come. The polyculture garden at the Food Innovation Center will be used as an education model, and class participants will engage in hands-on learning through planting a variety of crops in it. Participants will also be invited to participate in a season long polyculture backyard project, which includes two additional *free* workshops during the summer, where they can bring questions from their own gardens, and engage in summer garden activities.

READING THE FINE PRINT – DECODING FOOD SUSTAINABILITY CLAIMS SATURDAY, APRIL 18 | 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.| $10Food labels are influential in the food buying decisions of many people, but the labels used to communicate these qualities on the foods we buy can be confusing or even misleading. This class will go over the different certification programs and labels associated with food production with the goal of empowering food buyers to make informed decisions. Some of the terms covered will include: Organic, Natural, Non-GMO, Grass Fed, Pasture Raised, Cage Free, Antibiotic Free, Hormone Free, Local, Marine Stewardship Council and Fair Trade.

SEED STEWARDSHIP 101SATURDAY, MARCH 14 | 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. | $30This first course in the seed stewardship series will introduce you to the art and science of seed saving. You will learn how the simple act of saving seeds can build resilience within our local food system and take home the knowledge you need to begin saving seeds in your home or community garden.

SEED STEWARDSHIP 102 SATURDAY, MAY 16 | 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. | $40In this second seed stewardship course, you will learn how to design your garden for abundant food and seed production. We will examine a variety of garden designs, plant a model seed garden at the Kalamazoo Valley Community College Food Innovation Center, and workshop participant garden plans. Participants in this course will be invited to participate in a season-long community seed stewardship project, which includes two additional one-hour workshops during the summer in which we will cover scouting, isolation and hand-pollination techniques, seed-selection, and wet and dry seed processing.

SEASON EXTENSION WITH LOW HOOPS FOR FARM AND GARDENSATURDAY, MARCH 28 | 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. | $40Stretch your harvest further into the winter and start harvesting earlier in the spring by using low tunnels. Using our hoop benders, you will make a set of 6’ x 3’ or 4’x4’ low tunnels for your farm or garden and learn what and when to plant for successful winter and early spring harvests. Low tunnels can be used directly in the ground, inserted into raised beds, or used inside of a hoophouse to provide additional protection. Besides season extension, they can also be used in the summer for pest protection.

XMC401: THE LEAN EXPERIENCEAPRIL 3 | 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. | $345 This fast-paced, eight-hour workshop enables participants to learn and experience methods to simplify, standardize, and improve the workflow. This is the Lean experience. A workflow at any department and industry requires the establishment of process standards, management of performance metrics, constant elimination of waste, and enhancing performance outcomes. In this workshop, a production assembly workflow will be used as a case study to immerse participants in a highly competitive team environment. INTRO TO ROBOTIC HANDLING TOOL OPERATIONAPRIL 22 & 23 | 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. | $610 In this hands-on course you will learn how to safely operate a 6-Axis FANUC robot and manually control it in various modes such as Joint & World. Participants will become familiar with opening and editing programs, commanding I/O, work with Position Registers, as well as creating some of their own basic material handling programs. With this baseline knowledge of programming, participants will be able to follow the flow of a more complex program with subroutines. Using these skills, the participants will experience programs that will crash into fixtures, the DCS, other machine components, or need to restart the cycle with the robot still in the machine. They will learn how to safely jog the robot away and then use Position Registers to get the robot safely back to a Home Position. Upon discovering these issues the participants will Touch Up those points to avoid future crashes. Lastly, participants will learn how to use the functions within the teach pendant to aide in troubleshooting faults. CNAs are qualified for multiple job opportunities with good starting salaries. CNAs are employed by nursing homes, home healthcare agencies, hospitals, retirement communities, hospice and private homes. This fast-paced, seven-week program, held on nights and weekends, provides classroom instruction, hands on practice in a lab, real world clinical experience and acute care observation experience at a local hospital. Schlack Culinary and Allied Health BuildingKalamazoo Valley Community College’s Phlebotomy Technician Academy is a ten-week course. The academy is in partnership with Bronson Hospital. Students in the academy will receive training to work as phlebotomy technicians and they will work to become prepared to gain national certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology. Phlebotomists are crucial members of many clinical teams. Students will learn to draw blood from patients and prepare it for diagnostic testing. This four-week program will focus on obtaining the skills necessary to maintain the safety and security of a correctional facility. Due to the limited space for each academy, candidate evaluations will be conducted to determine admittance to the program. The current cost of the academy is $1200 and 10 credits will be awarded by Kalamazoo Valley Community College upon successful completion of the academy.
