Plans which have been drawn up by the Saltford Centre Steering Committee in response to the re{juirements expressed by those interested in improving Saltford Hall and the Sports Club to provide the new Saltford Centre are now on view at Saltford Hall, Salt ford Sports Club, Salt ford Library and Saltford Parish Council Office. A public Meeting will be held on Wednesday 14th August at 7.30 p.m. in the Wansdyk.e Room at the rear of Salt ford Hall 10 enable you to express your opinion concerning these plans . G.P. Committee News Risca Male Voice Choir A note for your diary - the Risca Male Voice Choir will be giving a concert at Sahford Hall on Sarurday 9th November 2002. More details will be given later in the year. - J Thomas Memories of Salt ford The terrible events of September 11th last year greatly overshadowed what had been a very enjoyable afternoon in the Wansdyke Room here in Sahford. A number of people carne along to tell how the 1939-45 war had affected them and we heard some very interesting stories. We are hoping to arrange another meeting, on the same lines, asking the older n:sidenls of Saltford what they can remember about personalities from the pas!. Do you remember Percy Simms whose book, "A History of Saltford Village" was a local best-seller in 1976? Do you remember how the Lavington family delivered milk straight from the churn on your doorstep? Do you remember bread delivered from a horse and trap? Wasn't the woman who drove it called Evelvn Macey? Do you remember Ern Giles, May Ollis, Joe Stephens, Mr Snailham who used to take his cow for a walk every evening? In more recent history memories of Gordon Reed must not be allowed to fade. In his introduction to Percy Simms book local historian Eric Linfield said, "It is important that local histories are written by local residents who have lived in the community throughout their lifetime ... " We hope to be able to record some of the

It will bc the first time that this work has been carried out and shows that the vision of those who built the hall 40 years ago and' put in high quality flooring was justified. A partition is to be erected across one cnd of the Somerset Room to create office space to be used eventually by a site administrator, and initially as a booking office. People wishing to book the prcmises should continue to do so by phon.: on 874081 (please do not use the Booking Officer's home numbcr) as the change when it happens will be transparent to users . It is hoped that an increased presence in the building will help to deter some of the graffiti writers and vandals that we are currently experiencing. Those who use the Somerset Room and who find the rcduced space an embarrassment should get in touch with the Booking Officer. The usual redecoration of the premises takes in the Somerset Room. Kelston Room and the stairs leading to them. Help is welcome (please see elsewhere in this newsletter). The exterior lighting is to be reviewed. Thc vanitory unit in the ladies toi let has already been completed in an attempt to make the facilities somewhat more a((ractive - favourable commenlS have bccn received.

General News When turning from August to September in the diary. the pages change from white to black - there is a huge amount of ac tivity at Salt ford Hall . Do use the premises. Quiet afternoons or evenings of whist. bridge, scrabb le or book discussions are a~ailable; painting (art, not only redecoration!) groups; all badminton groups would welcome more members (the Wednesday morning session is now a mixed group) , -singing or acting, including stage and set preparation; all of these are available and more. Could you find something to get

The Principle of a Relief Road/Bypass for Saltford. The actual response to the questionnaire you filled in is as follows: Proport ion of households who voted In SuppQrt 79%; Opposed 16.9%; Equal vote in household 1.9%; Undecided 2.2 %; Total 100%. Proportion of people who voted : In support 77 .8%; Opposed 20. 5%; Undecided 1. 6%; Total 99. 9%. The proportion of the electorate who voted was 62. 9% of households; 65 % of electorate. In terms of numbers of the total electorate, the result wa as follows:

The Parish Council is concerned about the heavy use of the A4 particularly the pollution, noise and inconvenience it causes and will now ask our local MP, B&NES District Council and 'the Minister of Transport to acknowledge that something needs to be done to alleviate the problem. As the survey made clear it is not the Parish Council's job to decide whether a relief road should be built or where it should be sited - we do not have the authority or expertise for such a mammoth task. The important thing is to convey the opinions of Saltford res idents about the problems caused by such a major, heavily used road running through our village. The Parish Counc il feel s strongly that these problems should in future be addressed and acted upon in area Trans!1ort and Structure Plans.

I have just rece ived a small supply, so fir t come - first served !

Bri!o101 Water/O C Summers Work has now been completed on the relining of the mains water supply pipes in Saltford. However there is still on going work t.aking place to replace some of the pipes. There is a map and details of the roads where this work is scheduled on the Parish Notice Board. It has been a mass ive project to achieve with relati vely minor hiccups and a C Summers personnel have specifica lly asked me to convey their sincere thanks to all the res idents for the way in which they have been received (and for the many cups of tea consumed). a C Summers helped provide road furniture for our Golden Jubilee festivities

at the eleventh hour and have kept me up to date with their programme of works in order that I could convey this onto you .

Railtrack At long last this Parish Council has achieved a communication link with this company and is now aware of t~e programme of works taking place along the Salt ford railway cutting. Basically all work done to date has been under the umbrella of Emergency Safety. New work is now taking place to secure the two embankments - the south sitk needs drainage wlrilst the north side requires netting. This work could continue well into 2003 before it is completed. There will be some carly morning and Sunday working taking place and we are assured that n:sidents affected by this will be informed by a leiter drop.

Community Woodland Project Volunteers are wanted at the Manor Road Community Forest to help create a wildlife area and as t.his is between Keynsham and Salt ford it would be very appropriate if more Saltford residents could become involved . Mini Seekers (5's - 7's) and .Seekers (7's - 11 's) meet at 6.45 p.m. on Fridays during term time for crafts and activities, lots of games and fun, singing and a Bible story. This meeting is currently taking place most weeks at Saltford School. (Contact Jan Gill for more details on 873381) After 8's (II +) meet at 8 p.m. on Fridays during term time for indoor activities and a Bible based talk lasting approximately 20 minutes . Other News SA1J TFORD BRASS MILL Saltford Brass Mill is open to the public on the second Saturday of each summer month. IO -12 noon. We are very pleased to say that the water wheel is once again in working order. thanks to the skill and dedication of our volunteers. As brass rubbing proved so popular last year we will be offering this again. At the present time we are clearing ground at the rear of the furnace with a view to providing a picnic area .for visitors. Group bookings are being taken for any date and time mutually convenient from now to the end of October. Volunteers arc nceded for the working party which meets at the Mill on alternate Saturdays during the whole year and to help with visitors.
