CALL 1300 763 505 www.cbb.com.au Issue 40 August 2011 CBB is on the move… After 16 years located at Woodville, where CBB first began as an independent social enterprise that generates its own income and gives assistance to other not-for-profits, we are on the move - in more ways than one! Physically we are relocating but this move is part of a considered and planned strategic repositioning as we consolidate our current activities, but also grow and develop new initiatives. We want to position ourselves in a more central location to: be more geographically accessible to a larger cross section of our Adelaide clients; be closer to the CBD as our relationships and contacts with governments increase; occupy larger premises with room to grow in staffing; have access to on-site modern training facilities for our own external courses as well as to be able to offer these facilities to others in the sector; provide professional facilities for our clients, and a hub for our increasing Community Development activities. This relocation is therefore much more than a simple office move as it will be the spearhead for an exciting period of renewal and strategic development of CBB as a social enterprise and a central player in the community and social services sector in Australia. 2 CBB Communiqué

I now know why so many management theorists and authors say a CEO should take time out to obtain a ‘helicopter view’ of their organisation. I am lucky to have been able to experience howtakingthisdifferentviewworkedoverNiagara, as well as in the work environment. Flying high above the issues can bring new intuition, revelation and vision by escaping from the detail (at least for a while). The structured, disciplined and analytical left- side of our brain lets the creative, intuitive right-side play its complementary role. May I take this opportunity to challenge you as CEOs and Leaders to take the time out to consider your enterprise from the helicopter view. Force yourself to step out

of the operational activity trap of busyness because you will save the time you spend many times over by seeing the bigger picture - the wider view. Management theorists suggest you need to do this frequently, alternating between big-picture helicopter views and the more close-up detail analysis, to remain in touch with both levels. You will see those big demanding issues from a different perspective – they willbecome smaller, less recognisable dots way below. You will see many more dots but you may also see how the dots are, or could be, joined by not focusing upon them. They can

emerge as a pattern of related items, not in isolation any more but rather connected (or disconnected), enabling new revelation. This can bring a new vision of what is, what could be and how you might undertake the journey. Pathways may become visible from the helicopter which are hidden from you on the ground, as was so much of the amazing Niagara Falls. Sometimes we focus on the strategic planning so much that we forget to look for the strategic vision. Whynottakeaflightupandoutofthedailydetail and, if it works, keep on doing it?

CBB has affirmed its commitment to the development of social innovation

and enterprise in the not-for-profit sector through the introduction of

“The Social Enterprise Workshop” [TSEW].

This is an experiential learning program requiring an eight-month commitment from participants. TSEW will build and sustain innovation in the sector and assist the acceleration of social enterprise development across the sector.

TSEW is currently being developed under licence from Enterprise Development Inc. as an intensive learning environment which relies on individuals and teams being better equipped to expertly identify, develop and implement opportunities in their organisation.

Keep an eye out for further announcements through the CBB Communiqué, direct emails and other media!

The SOCIAL ENTERPRISE WorkshopIMAGINE • INNOVATE • IMPACT

I consider myself a lucky person in so many ways but particularly (in the

context of this brief column) due to my trip a few years ago riding high above

Niagara Falls in my first flight in a helicopter. What a fantastic view and so

different from seeing this natural wonder from the ground or on the water,

up close and far below the aircraft.

CLIENT STORYI would never have believed that Salary Packaging would be of any help to me.

But, boy was I wrong! You see, I work for a welfare agency and my salary is reasonably modest and I live on a pay-to-pay basis. Cash flow has alwaysbeen a problem and budgeting has not been my forté. So when I heard about salary packaging I thought it was too good to be true or there must be a catch somewhere and I didn’t really understand it anyway.

My lunchroom angelI was having lunch one day when a workmate explained to me how salary packaging works for her and how easy it is and better still how much extra take-home pay she gets without having to work any extra shifts. So I asked CBB to explain it to me and I was amazed how easy it is and they showed me how my entitlements could be much more.

Now I have a salary packaging card that I use to pay my weekly food and petrol bills and best of all I am using tax free dollars to keep me on track.

You see, I use it like a budget and I focus on payingfortheessentialsfirstandI’mdoingmy best to make the most of the extra $91 I get each payday.

Thank you to my lunchroom angel and to CBB.Boy,it’smadeahugedifference.

Risk Management Conference 2011October 24th-25th, 2011 at the

National Wine Centre, Adelaide

Have you pencilled it in your diary? Or placed an entry in your electronic calendar? What is the risk if you miss out? This is an opportunity to gain practical information and explore solutions to your own issues.

CBB, in partnership with SACOSS, is currently compiling this national conference. A variety of keynote presentations are being assembled by people who have been involved in small-through-to-major risk management issues across Australia; workshops will be conducted by community sector

organisations sharing their success stories about managing risk; and panels of experts and practitioners will share principles and practical experiences.

Over recent years services across the community sector and health sectors have found their time has been dominated by risk management. There are many myths and a plethora of information about risk management, which often leaves organisations misinformed, confused and overwhelmed. This conference sets out to explore whether risk management is really overdone, overrated or overstated.

Registration details and conference information will become available during July/August 2011.

Contact Wayne Turner at CBB Consulting on 1300 284 364 for further information.

Conference 2011Monday 24th - Tuesday 25th October 2011

National Wine Centre - Hackney Road, Adelaide

Many not-for-profit organisations

that receive funding from South

Australian Government departments

and agencies are expected to

be using the Standard Chart of

Accounts [SCOA] for all new funding

agreements from 1st July 2011.

Whilst the SCOA has been adopted earlier in the eastern states of Australia it has now been seen as a way of reducing the administrative processes and costs of not-for-profit organisations that receivegovernment funding.

The SCOA provides a basis of establishing accounts as well as a data dictionary that will assist the way accounts are applied within and across not-for-profit organisations.Consistency across organisations and how accounts are applied and interpreted becomes easier as a result of using the SCOA and data dictionary.

SCOA is not a new notion. It was a direction, agreed at the Council of Australian Governments [COAG] in December 2009, that a SCOA be implemented. “…COAG agreed that where possible, jurisdictions adopt a standard chart of accounts (excluding gaming and fundraising elements), by 1st July 2010, on all new funding agreements involvingthenot-for-profitsectorandthatremaining jurisdictions adopt a standard chart of accounts by 1 July 2011.”

The South Australian Government, through State Cabinet, approved the implementation of the SCOA on 9th May 2011.

CBB Consulting is currently assisting organisations adapt the SCOA to enhance the quality of the recording, reporting and interpretation of accounting and financialinformation - internally as well as to government departments and agencies. CBB’smissionistoassistothernot-for-profitorganisations build their capability and capacity to deliver efficient and effectiveoutcomes to clients. As part of achieving our mission:

CBB Consulting will be providing a free introduction to the SCOA at our new Kensington facility. An email will be forwarded to Communiqué subscribers inviting registration to attend one of two seminars to be held on 10th August 2011; 12noon – 2:00pm or 4:00pm – 6:00pm.

Professional Development

CBB Consulting recognises that professional development must be relevant, timely and add value to the quality of the services providedbyyourorganisation’sstaff.

We also recognise that training facilities should have relevant technology and resources to ensure the training environment is welcoming and appropriate for the delivery of effective professionaldevelopment and learning outcomes.

CBB has relocated to new premises at Kensington and will provide the majority of our professional development from these facilities, which include a conference room and two break-out rooms.

The training facilities will be available for after hours and weekend hire from 25th July 2011.

The professional development calendar, that CBB Consulting provides, is constructed to address issues confronting our clients and the feedback we receive from clients regarding current and future training needs. The professional development calendar for the second half of 2011 is now in place and provides what organisations are seeking. This comprises:

• Accounting for non-accountants• Mediation at Work• Grant Writing• Better meetings, agendas and minutes• Workplace Wellness• Emotional Intelligence at Work• Financial Reports• Maximising the effectiveness of staff

appraisals• Diversity and Ethics at Work• Financial Tools• Strategic Planning

Information relating to the calendar can be found on the CBB website www.cbb.com.au.

Mental Health is at the cross-roads.

Changes are in the wind that will transcend philosophy, policy, practice and delivery. Decision makers at this conference will not merely consider but will most likely impact directly upon foundation issues regarding consumer and carer recognition, quality assurance, sustainable service delivery, value and worth.

It is timely and appropriate that fundamental questions are posed by those who fund services, those who provide services and most importantly, consumers and their carers themselves. Undoubtedly this will spur robust debate around a whole raft of issues but one issue must be universally accepted: It is time for new relationships to evolve and within that new beginning we confirm and hold true the belief that consumers, with their support systems, are at the centre of any future developments in Mental Health.

It is timely that we meet at this conference as organisations, groups and individuals who can make a difference. This is an exciting time. It may in fact be a unique opportunity to construct a shared view that leads us to a new horizon.

The time to consider our connectedness, our relationship and our future is now and we at RFWA are delighted to bring so many crucial people together to engage in this process.
