reaching the recipient or having the

desired effect on the recipient. The

problem areas at every stage in the process

of communication and other things that

can distort communication is

called the barriers of communication.

Physical barrier

Obstacle that prevent a message from reaching the

intended recipient may be outside and beyond the

control of the persons concerned.

Defects in the medium :- Defects in the devices like telephone, postal

System, failure in Electronic medium etc.

Noise in the environment :-Noise during transmission process

carried by air vibration, traffic,factory work, talking

Information overloaded :- Too much information e.g. advertising and sales information

Semantic and language Barriers

Semantic barrier arises because words means different things to different persons.

Age, Education, Cultural background, words having multiple meaning, technical terms, pronunciation and the stress on words, similar sounding convey different meanings etc.

Socio-psychological Barriers

Most of the socio-psychological barriers operate at the emotional level.

lf-centered attitudes :-Looking everything from the point of view of our own interest & Desires, some useful Information is missed

Group identification :-Values & opinions

influenced by groups like family, relatives,

locality, Nationality,language becomes

barrier to communication

Filtering :-Filtering is the process of reducing the detail or aspects of a message which results in loss of information.

Status block :-Social and official status distance can raise a difficult barrier.

Poor communication skill :-Lack of communication skill prevents a person from framing the message properly.

State of health :-Physical condition like pain or fever makes a person disinclined to engage in communication.Perception is also low in poor state of health.

caused by delay made in the movement of the information,misinterpretation, lack of understanding, negligence,filtrations at every level etc affect the efficiency as well as the quality of work.

Cross-cultural Barriers

Cross cultural factors naturally increases the possible problems of communication. If, for historical or political reasons, the relationship between two countries are not friendly, there can be even greater problems of communication.

Significant differences between cultures are: National character/basic

personality ,Language ,Values and norms of behavior,Social relationships, thinking process, perception,concept of time, concept of space.

Tips to avoid barriers in work place

Avoid vulgur language Have no assumptions Do not cross question during important

discussions or meetings. Provide proper information related to the work

before enaging in work.
