While UK-headquartered, BT is a European and world-wide operating communications company, processes vast amounts of personal data driving technological innovation and playing a major role in new technological developments such as cloud computing. We look to the new European data protection rules being straightforward and practical. They must provide a careful balance between the protection of privacy for individuals, innovation of new products and services, and the need to drive market competitiveness with the rest of the World. Not only IT companies like BT need the key definitions of the new Regulation to be clear and precise to avoid legal uncertainty. This applies for instance to what is ‘personal data’, ‘data portability’ and the whole concept of the famous ‘right to be forgotten’. Similarly, David Cameron during a visit to Pudsey telephone exchange, with Openreach chief executive Liv Garfield and apprentices Openreach is to create 1,000 new engineering jobs – the majority of them installing fibre broadband in customers’ homes across the UK. The Prime Minister has welcomed the major new recruitment drive – which BT says is thanks to the company’s £2.5bn clarifications are required on conditions for lawful processing, consent and the meanings of ‘on-line identifier’ and ‘processing’. Bt has secured a licence for 2x15Mhz of FDD and 20Mhz of tDD 2.6ghz spectrum. Sports fans’ first serious alternative to sky is on course to launch later in 2013: Bt announced in 2012 plans to launch a sports channel, Bt sport after its acquisition of a share of the rights to Barclays premier league football television coverage for the 2013-14 to 2015-16 seasons and espn’s uK and Ireland tV channels business.

since the launch was announced, Bt has been building a compelling portfolio of sports for Bt sport:

• 38 live games a season from the Barclays premier league, 18 of which will be the best quality ‘first pick’ games featuring the top-six teams. When Bt won those rights, it was the first time anyone other than sky had won rights to show any of the ‘first pick’ games in the history of the Barclays premier league

• live matches from the Fa cup, clydesdale Bank scottish premier league, ueFa

Fibre optic cables, which have remained unused on the seabed of the atlantic ocean for about three years, are to be diverted to the Isles of scilly in a £3.7 million scheme to give the islanders the fastest broadband speeds.

the project is part of the £132 million superfast cornwall initiative between the european regional Development Fund, Bt and cornwall council, which plans to deliver faster broadband throughout

BT showcases innovation in healthcare technology

Bt was one of the main sponsors of a major exhibition showcasing innovation in the healthcare market. thousands of healthcare professionals assembled in london for healthcare Innovation expo 2013, the largest exhibition and conference of its kind in europe.

the event gave delegates a chance to see some of the world’s most inspiring solutions in healthcare technology - including some being showcased by Bt - and hear from national and international experts taking part in more than 100
