WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Lot 8321861 Perkins Bacon Rough Perf 14-16 1/- dark green SG 46 with perfs at right & left and cut from the sheet at top &base, with part '[CANC]ELLED' handstamp applied vertically, large-part o.g., Cat £12,000. Ex Peter Jaffé and BillMcCredie: sold at auction in 2011 for $13,800.

Six examples each of the so-called "Ormond Hill Specimens" were produced by Perkins Bacon for all of "their"Colonies at the request of Rowland Hill's nephew and gifted to him, action that resulted in the Agent for the CrownColonies terminating Perkins Bacon's printing contracts. 75 different stamps were involved, of 20 British Colonies andfour stamps of Chile. The 'CANCELLED' h/s was applied to blocks of 6 that were later separated, often with scissorsor a blade, resulting in many of the individual stamps having trimmed perfs on one or two sides. [NB: for the WA 1/-,based on application of the handstamp, it appears that a pair and block of 4 were supplied]

For Western Australia, the recorded stamps are 1d x2, 6d x4 & 1/- x5 (the most recently discovered with'CANCELLED' removed!! by an idiot). A full "set" is in the Royal Collection.
