I. The Mass of the Supper of the Lord HE MASS today and the attendant liturgical rites commemorate the institution of the Holy Eucharist and the Priesthood. Therefore the purple of Passiontide is laid aside and festive white vestments are used, the Gloria

is sung, and bells are rung. (After the Gloria, they will remain silent until the Gloria is intoned again on Holy Saturday). The Mass ends with a solemn procession of the Holy Eucharist to the Altar of Repose after which the Altars are stripped in commemoration of the events in Our Lord’s life. We all leave the Church in somber quietness reflecting on the events commemorated.

The Corinthians seemed to find it difficult to make the change in behavior demanded by conversion. St. Paul reminds them (and us) that the holy Eucharist is not just another meal or party, but a living participation in the events of our Lord’s life. If we value our health, we ought not to partake without due preparation.

GRADUAL Philip 2:8,9 THE HOLY GOSPEL (STAND) John 13:1-15

Charity, says the Epistle, is the indispensable condition for receiving Holy Communion. Charity, says the Gospel, is also the chief fruit of the Eucharist; therefore, after having instituted it, Jesus taught His disciples this duty of charity by a symbolic gesture as He humbled Himself to wash their feet. In some churches this gesture is reproduced in the ceremony of the Maundy.

II. The Solemn Procession of the Eucharist After Mass, the priest prepares for the translation of the Eucharist to the Altar of Repose. All kneel as he censes the Sacred Gifts and then solemnly processes through the Church to the Altar of Repose. The following Hymn (repeating verses 1-4 as necessary) is sung by all KNEELING: HYMN AT PROCESSION Pange Lingua Plainsong/T. L. da Vittoria

¶ The people alternate the verses with the choir singing Hymn No. 199 (1). ¶ When the priest arrives at the Altar of Repose and places the Blessed

Sacrament upon the Altar, he censes it while the final Verses are sung.

III. The Stripping of the Altars PSALM 21

The celebrant returns to the Sanctuary, changes his white vestments for a purple stole and begins the ceremony of The Stripping of the Altars.

This is meant to recall Our Lord’s humiliation at His Passion and to symbolize that the Holy Sacrifice is interrupted and will not be resumed until Holy Saturday night.

We leave the Church in silence bowing only to the High Altar and genuflecting on both knees as we pass the Altar of Repose.

IV. The Night Watch The faithful keep a vigil at the Altar of Repose until midnight in thanksgiving for the gift of the Eucharist and Christ’s voluntary Passion and Death for our sakes. Unlike the apostles who could not “wait for an hour” with the Lord, we joyously keep watch and pray.

HOLY & GOOD FRIDAY

April 29, 2016 T the beginning of today’s service the priest lies prostrate at the foot of the altar. This is a sign of man’s desolate and helpless condition before being redeemed by Christ. In the solemn petitions, every group of people, every affliction of mankind is brought to the

dying Christ and united to the mediating power of His death. The Veneration of the Cross is one of the high points of today’s liturgical service. First, Christ on His cross is solemnly and dramatically unveiled and then adored and kissed. Thus in worship we tenderly thank Our Lord Jesus Christ for the salvation wrought for all at so great a cost. Through the cross He won the victory of the world’s redemption. Good Friday’s triumph is manifested in Christ’s resurrection. The climax of today’s worship is the Mass of the Pre-Sanctified Gifts. After Christ is brought backed to the re-covered altar, He is elevated and consumed. All Orthodox Christians who so desire and are properly prepared may receive Holy Communion. The primary intention in receiving the Body and Blood of Christ, sacrificed this day for all should be to “obtain more abundantly the fruits of redemption.” Thereafter the absence of His Eucharistic Presence deepens our mourning for His violent death. Today our worship is directed, not to the unbloody Sacrifice of the Mass, but exclusively to the act of redemption of Christ on the Cross and the triumphant sacrifice of Calvary. On this most sacred day everyone should observe a pious recollection of mind, and not forget the fast and abstinence. THE ENTRANCE (stand) THE PROSTRATION as the Celebrant prostrates everyone kneels. COLLECT (kneel)

PART I. THE LESSONS

FIRST LESSON (sit) Osee 6:1-6

The future national and religious conversion of Israel, predicted in vs. 1-3, is taken today as a figure of the coming resurrection of Christ. The insincerity and inconstancy of Israel, told in vs. 4-6 and punished by the scolding of the prophets, is a warning that all worship and charity should be sincere and should be based on sound doctrine.

RESPONSORY Hab. 3:2-3 COLLECT (stand) SECOND LESSON (sit) Ex. 12:1-11

The blood of the slain lamb upon the doorposts, as well as the consuming of the lamb, signified the passage of, the passing over of God’s people from Egyptian slavery to freedom. Jesus was the Passover (Paschal) Lamb who was slain in order to redeem the cosmos. Through redemption by Christ, all are meant to pass over from slavery of sin to newness of life in Him.

RESPONSORY Ps. 139: 2-10, 14 THE PASSION OF CHRIST (stand) John 18:1-40; 19:1-42

Jesus, divine King, was bartered in trial against a robber, then scourged to induce pity, and mocked in His kingship. Crucified for the sins of mankind, He committed all to the spiritual care of His Mother.

ANTHEM (sit) Caligaverunt oculi mei Johann Michael Haydn My eyes are darkened by my tears: For he is far from me that comforted me: See, O all ye people, if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow. O all ye that pass by, behold and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow.

SERMON (sit) Right Reverend Monsignor John A. Mangels

PART II. THE SOLEMN PRAYERS (stand)

• For the Church • For the Patriarch • For Rulers and Governors • For Catechumens • For the needs of the Faithful • For Unity of the Church • For the Conversion of the Jews • For the Conversion of Unbelievers

PART III. SOLEMN ADORATION OF THE CROSS

Celebrant: Behold the woods of the Cross, whereon was hung the world’s salvation.

¶ The people kneel and respond: O come, let us worship. Then people stand and the celebrant repeats the Versicle 2 more times as the people kneel at the response each time.

THE VENERATION OF THE CROSS ¶ The clergy take off their shoes and approach the cross with three double genuflections, kiss the cross and return to their places. ¶ The people approach the cross with three simple genuflections, kiss the cross and return to their places and listen as the choir sings the REPROACHES.

THE REPROACHES Peter A. Kwasniewski CRUX FIDELIS O. L. Santos

Faithful cross, above all other, One and only noble tree: None in foliage, none in blossom, None in fruit thy peer may be. Sweetest wood and sweetest iron, Sweetest weight is hung on thee!

PART IV. THE MASS OF THE PRE-SANCTIFIED GIFTS

Good Friday is the anniversary of our Lord’s death. On this day, when on Calvary the blood-stained throne of the Cross stands before the world, the Church, bowed low in adoration before Him who reigns from the Cross, does not celebrate the Sacrifice of the Mass; following the ancient practice, once widespread, she contents herself with receiving the Sacred Body of Christ consecrated yesterday. That is why the name MASS OF THE PRE-SANCTIFIED is given to this communion rite. ¶ A Procession is made to the ALTAR OF REPOSE. The people stand as the clergy process. THE BLESSED SACRAMENT is retrieved and as the Procession re-enters the Church, ALL KNEEL.

HYMN Vexilla Regis plainsong/Antonio Lotti

¶ the verses of Vexilla Regis are alternated between the choir and people using Hymn No. 63(1).

¶ The Celebrant places the Pre-Sanctified Gifts upon the Altar and censes it. The Chalice is prepared with wine and water; the Gifts and the altar are censed; the celebrant washes his hands and says:

PRAY BRETHREN…NO RESPONSE IS MADE. THE LORD’S PRAYER (ferial tone) THE ELEVATION OF THE PRE-SANCTIFIED GIFTS COMMUNION OF THE FAITHFUL MOTET Adoramus te, Christe Gregor Aichinger

We adore Thee, O Christ and we bless thee; Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world.

POSTCOMMUNION COLLECTS ¶ After the Collects, the Celebrant and his servers leave the Sanctuary and return to the Sacristy. The people should leave the Church quietly—without conversation—on this holy day of the Lord’s Passion and Death.
