What skills did you use?
Literacy
It’s not just reading anymore!
LITERACY consists of
Reading Writing Speaking Listening
Think about a typical day in your class.
Do you ask you students to use all 4 skills?
If so, do you show them how?If you don’t, why?
Common Core
Fall 2014 Students will be ready for college and career. Educators will focus on preparing students with
the skills they need post-high school. The focus shifts to looking deeper at our
content, not at covering additional content.
Common Core will bring a literacy lens to the content areas.
Wait! I don’t teach READING!
Common Core asks that every teacher use literacy skills to help their students understand
their content.
Reading Writing
Speaking Listening
All 4 skills apply to all content areas!
By 8th grade, our students should read 45% literature and 55%
nonfiction.
By 12th grade, our students should read only 30% literature and 70%
