Common Core and Standards-based Report Cards
What is common core?
• Set of academic standards that 45 states have adopted
• Standards have been adopted for math and language arts for each grade level in Illinois
Why is this important?
• Currently, every state has its own set of academic standards, meaning public education students in each state are learning at different levels
• All students must be prepared to compete with not only their American peers in the next state, but with students from around the world
Adoption process in D200
• Committees of teachers reviewed common core standards and made changes when deemed necessary
• Standards were piloted and revised again• Standards will be revised again after further
implementation

Highlights of Common Core
• Emphasis on comparing two texts to each other
• Much more time on writing, including grammar
• More difficult grade level text, especially in grades 4 and 5
• Continued importance of instruction on vocabulary and informational text
With new standards came…
• A new report card• New math textbooks and materials• New Individualized Reading Assessments to
determine each child’s reading level
New Report Card Differences
• Standards-Based Grading for all subjects– Purpose of card is communicate mastery of
general education expectations for each grade – List of skills that are essential for student success– Academic skills separate from social/emotional
skills and work habits– Opportunity for students to show mastery after a
grading period has ended – Student reading level indicated as above, on, or
below
Standards-based vs. Traditional Grading Standards-based Traditional
More recent information only Everything marked is included
Achievement only Often a mix of achievement, attitude, effort, and behavior
From summative assessment only
From formative and summative assessments
Directly related to a standard Usually related to an assessment method
I, S, N for grades
I = Independently demonstrates mastery S = Support needed to demonstrate mastery
(more than grade level peers) N = Not yet evident
What does with support mean?
Support means that the student requires accommodations beyond what the majority of the class is getting. Examples include:
