Commodore ROB DOWNS l
Fellow LYC Members,
As you know, this year, has been a “bonus year” for me as your
Commodore. At this time last year, the LYC Board of Directors asked me to
fill in as Commodore for the 2017 season. As a Past Commodore, I gladly
accepted the offer to help out the club in any way I can. At that time, I was
warned that it might be a tough year ahead. Now, as my term is winding
down, the reality is that it was to be a great year ahead! All of our leadership team worked
together as a unit to make LaSalle Yacht Club even better than ever. Our Board Meetings
were well attended, orderly & productive. Our Officers & Directors have been focused on
the many tasks at hand as they come along, as well as planning for the continued success of
our club. Our Members show their support when they see me on Friday nights as well as
supporting the club by attending events.
It’s always risky to name names when thanking people for their help, but I must call out a
few of the people that agreed to come along with me on this bonus year. Our Treasurer, Ken
Argona, our Secretary Mike Shepard & our Social Director Kari Bullman all made the
commitment to stay on for the 2017 year in support of our club & of me personally. Thank
you to my teammates. As you know, Kari served double duty as editor of this fine
publication, The Griffon Log, & Mike served double duty as a Director. That’s dedication.
Impossible to name everyone, a giant thank you goes out to our Directors & Officers,
everyone that helped along the way & you, the Members of LaSalle Yacht Club for making
my “bonus year” the best year ever! Thank you all!
Rob Downs

Vice Commodore JOHN CAPUTO
Members and Friends,
As the boats start to thin at the docks, the boat yard starts to buzz and the
leaves change my thoughts go to the winter season ahead. Hopefully it will
pass quickly and spring will be early.
As your Vice Commodore, I have entertained many requests. Some made
sense, some just made me wonder! I have been attempting to accommodate
most. However, the question that haunts me is this; Is this what the majority of the
membership expects from their Club?
This is a question that cannot be answered without the memberships’ input and in order to
serve you better, I have compiled a confidential questionnaire to provide an opportunity for
you to affect the future of our club. I will mail it to each of you directly and ask, please
provide honest and constructive input. Thank You in advance for partaking.
Vice Commodore, John M. Caputo
A special message from Jackie, Restaurant Manager
I would like to say that Chef Dan and the Crew have been expediting such a wonderful
product all summer. Working with Chef for the last 3 weeks and being around 100s of Chefs
at Universal Studios and Walt Disney World I have to say LYC is lucky to have a Chef who
cares what he puts out and a consistent product..
Thank you!

Rear Commodore TODD WILSON
Members,
Well the chill is in the air! The sad faces walking around getting boats ready to
be put away for another Winter. Soon we will turn our sadness into happy
faces looking forward to the great events at our club. The commodore’s ball
and all the events there after. The club is a great place to grab some warmth,
good conversation and maybe a laugh or two while we all wait for the time
when we can feel the sunshine again. Take care.

Fleet Captain RAY FOLMAR
Members and Friends,
Well the season has almost come to an end. The marina is almost empty
and the boat yard is filling up. We had a great end to a so-so season. Please
remember if you have boat stored in the boat yard for the winter please
remember to fill out your winter storage form.
I'm looking forward to a relaxing winter. The holidays are around the
corner and we have a lot of great events coming up that I hope to see everyone at,
Fleet Captain, Ray Folmar

Social Director KARI ANN BULLMAN
Fellow friends and members,
“The swiftest hours, as they flew”, “swift fly the years’ or as the age old
idiom has evolved I must say…” how time flies”!
I sit in this moment writing my very last Griffon Log article after a four-year
period as our very own Social Director; it is time to hang up my hat and as I
reflect so many memories come over me, ones that I talk about all the time
and some of those little moments that are just for me, I am certainly feeling nostalgic. Four
years ago, not long after I joined as a member, Tim Philips asked me to be the next Fleet
Captain (this is a true story), I thought about it seriously for a while to come to turn it down
and asked to be considered for the Social Director’s position and four years later I wonder
what it would have been like moving up the chairs; I would be standing where Rob is now
as LYC’s 2017 (and first female) Commodore. I know we all have been down this road…
where you reflect and wonder what if; should of I? Did I make a mistake? It would be nice
to have Commodore on my resume. But, truly, I would not have changed a thing. As Social
Director I got the opportunity to learn and understand the inner workings of the club, which
is so important being an organization ran by all member volunteerism and dedication; also
working besides each Commodore, Tim, Marty, Mike and Rob and of course all the Officers,
and my dear friend and our Secretary Mike Shepard… all were so good to me! It’s been
truly an honor to have been able to work with you side by side. Paul Grenga and John
Caputo I wanted to name separately as they too are dear friends. The three of us worked
very closely together over the years. And, I want to thank them for everything they did to
help me along the way. Even though Paul did not finish out his term, he still has done so
much for the club. While in his term, he worked very hard at everything that came in front
of him, he is always giving behind the scenes and helping even when it was not asked for.
And, I know John you will make a great Commodore - so enjoy your final year!
Truly, all of the relationships I developed the past four years are important to me. The First
Mates, Judy and Dan and those members that became friends! Some for guidance and some
for fun!
With that said, I had a great four years, not everything came easy, but, that comes with
anything we do. I hope that everyone did too and really enjoyed the music I brought back to
the club... I hope to see it return!
Your friend, Kari Ann Bullman

LaSalle Yacht Club was initially organized in 1936 by a small group of residents in
the LaSalle area of Niagara Falls, who felt there was a need for both a boating and social or-
ganization in the city. Nearly 50 members became Charter Members and later that year the
Club was incorporated.
The first Clubhouse was located at the upper end of Cayuga Island, a little distance
upstream and across the Little Niagara River from where the Explorer LaSalle built the
"Griffon", the first sailing vessel on the upper Great Lakes. Appropriately, an outline of the
"Griffon" was selected as the Club's emblem on its burgee.
Due to the rapid increase in its membership, the Clubhouse and waterfront facilities
became inadequate within a few years. After reviewing the problems involved in expand-
ing its facilities at that location, it was decided to attempt to relocate the Club to the larger
Niagara River.
The present Club property was purchased 10 years later in 1946. This involved an
expenditure of some $50,000 - an immense sum for such a young organization. Initially, the
original Clubhouse building, which had been the residence of a former Niagara Falls city
mayor, was expanded to provide for a dining room and kitchen, in addition to the bar and
other necessary facilities.
Several other improvements to the Clubhouse were made during the next few years.
In addition, a new seawall, the first dock and its subsequent extension and additional boat
slips were also built during that period.
In the middle 1950's, it became apparent that the Clubhouse and waterfront were in-
adequate for the continuing increase in Club membership and the number of boats. Conse-
quently, a major expansion and remodeling of those facilities was undertaken in 1959, at a
cost of more than $100,000. This program included expanding the Clubhouse floor area by
nearly 100 percent (kitchen, dining room, chartroom lounge) providing for more meeting
rooms and building a new sail loft.
Further extension of the dock and additional boat slips was made in l96l, the Silver
Anniversary year of LaSalle Yacht Club. Since that time,
numerous improvements have been made to the interior
and exterior of the Clubhouse and the waterfront facilities.
