Pontiac Yacht Club Telltales Page
It is almost time to start
the season . . . The docks go in
this week, then the boats go in the
next and we are off! I look for-
ward to seeing all of you at the
Club Opening/Work Party this
weekend. It takes all of us to get
our beloved club in top shape for
the season and the more of us are
present, the faster it goes. If you
cannot make it, please contact
Mark Goldman for an alternate
work assignment.
In a departure from previ-
ous years, the Board has decided
to not distribute the club directory
at the work party. While it is a
good time to get the book out, the
beginning of the season is when
we learn of much updated per-
sonal info, and the directory is
obsolete as soon as we hand it
out. So look for a draft directory
on the counter in the club and
verify that your numbers are all
correct. Also look for me if you
would like your picture in the
photo pages in the center of the
book. I will have a camera with
me and would like to have all of
the members included. The final-
ized directory will come out at the
Memorial Day regatta.
Thank you to
everyone who helped make the
Spring Recall a successful event -
it had the highest attendance I can
remember. You can read more
about it in this month’s TellTales,
but I would remind everyone that
attending Gary’s Safety & Equip-
ment seminar is mandatory for
racing this year. I’ve been racing
a long time, but I learned a few
things myself. Gary will give it
again at the Bug Out and the Me-
morial Day regatta.
With the bug out on May
5th, the season will officially be-
gin. Sadly, I will be retrieving my
crew from Michigan Tech that
weekend and will not participate,
but I will be out the following
Wednesday. I can’t wait! Please
see Tom Klaban’s write up on
race courses later in the TellTales.
We hope to have great consis-
tency in Race Committees this
year.
Then the season jumps
into gear with the Lake Lansing
tune up on May 11th, and the Bay

View One Design Regatta (BOD) on June 1st and 2nd. This is an hysterically fun regatta with more than a
dozen classes, hundreds of sailors, and a legendary Bay View Party to boot. Last year was the first year that
Lightnings were invited and we impressed everyone by having the biggest class there. We want to improve on
our numbers for this year (it can’t possibly blow 25 two years in a row). Sign up now!
It’s almost summer. I look forward to seeing everyone enjoying Cass Lake, our beach, our barbeque pit
and the rest of our wonderful club.
Lightning Racing Stickers
Lightning Skippers who intend to have their scores counted by the Race Committee will need
to have the 2013 affixed in the appropriate locations. The only stickers needed are:
PYC for Lightning
PYC for trailer
ILCA
Michigan registration
Club stickers will be posted in the Clubhouse for all members who have paid their 2013 dues.

For the approaching 2013 Lightning Class race season, there are a few Regattas to bring to your
attention. The District is working toward a goal of having 40+ boat participation at the Bayview
One Design, the Michigan District Championship, the Great Lake Championship, and the PYC
Whitecap Regattas. Full information on these events can be found on the ILCA website
(www.lightningclass.org). Please save these dates and come race.
The Bayview One Design Regatta is June 1st-2nd at Crescent Yacht Club for Lightnings

The 2013 Spring Recall was held at the Sylvan Lake Community Center on April 14. Trey
Rose showed 2012 regatta highlights. Wally Cross from Quantum Sails told us how to
have fun and win, and Gary Reinheimer gave the explanation of on water safety equipment
that is required for all Lightning Skippers who intend to race this year. Ed Dzuiba won
the prize for the “best chili”. The PYC All-Star panel of Tom Klaban, John Garrison,
and Mark Allen provided go fast tips and strategies for racing on Cass Lake. Bill Zeigler
organized the event. He arranged for the venue, and he supplied food and utensils. His
chili won nearly as many votes as Ed Dzuiba’s.

Quantum Sails – Wally Cross
Wally Cross provided advice on tuning, sail trim, and teamwork at the Spring Recall. He said to make sure the rig is
square. Mark everything. Check the tuning guide as a reference and then test it against other boats. Make a guide for
every type of wind; Light, Medium & High. Create a tuning guide for each of these types of conditions. Create refer-
ences on the Sails. Make sure you have telltales on the sales. Take picture of the sails so that you have reference for
what is effective and what is not.
Everyone on your sailing team has to have the same goals. A you can’t get discouraged when you lose. Describe each
team position. Good sailing teams talk all the time about what is going on the race course. Take note of what other
boats are doing relative to your own boat. Talk about what’s coming up (like mark rounding). Balance input with decision
making. You need to develop a system on how you race from leaving the dock to starts, races, finishes and getting back
to the dock.
Speed, Information and Workers create a complete system. Boat handling is very important and needs to be practiced.
Prepare before a race - check wind, waves, current etc.
Use a numbering system to do everything - tacking, jibing, rounding marks, and take downs. Use a numbering system like
3, 2 & 1 for the steps of crew activity. On a tack 3 means lean in, 2 means start tack and 1 means complete the tack.
Look like a team. Get same shirts, hats, etc. Make sure you have fun and relax - be in the moment.

2013 BOATS storage
Lower boat storage
I have been working on a boat organization plan that will hopefully open up the area and provide for better access to rack boat
owners.
To do this certain ground rules would be required, enforcement is another issue.
1) Only rack boats will be stored in the rack area. That is any boat with out a launching cart. This will hopefully stop the pile
up we experienced last summer in this area with boats on small carts filling up the spaces between racks. (Utility launch carts
i.e. for everyone’s use excepted)
2) Boats with road trailers (trailers with a vehicle trailer hitch) will be parked in the upper boat storage area, no exceptions.
3) There is a 50 ft line from about the electric pole to parking spot 9 in the parking lot.
I propose parking 10 (Laser’s,etc) along this line. Boats have to be on a shore
Launching trailer, however. This would accommodate most or all of the racing team
boats. (Coordination with Eric would be prime)
4) Opti racks need to be repaired, one is completely broken down. Mark for alt work assignments.
5) Place Opti racks either to the east or west of the Cat launch beach, which ever works best for the Opti sailors. (The east
side has exposed roots that may cause issues)
6) There will also be available space to the left of the new boat ramp dock, but that will depend on the need of boats to queue
up coming or going from the ramp.
Upper parking area
Only boat trailers should be parked along the common fence and the tree line facing the trailer park.
Summer storage of boats on trailers (dry sailors) will be lined up to the west of the tree line. This is to prevent any possi-
ble boat damage caused by falling limbs.
Alternate work assignment moving boats away from fence.
Please feel free to expand on these thoughts.
If we can get a reasonable and manageable plan formed it would be wise to start initiating it through Telltales for start-
ers.
