    Contraot Markets ~d Commodities

A oontraot market is one whioh has been 1ioensed by the Secretary ot ~riculturc pursuant to the Commodity Exchange Act to conduot trading in ODe or more oommodities for future delivery. During the fiscal year ended Juna 30, 1952, the~1 were 18 8uGh markets, &8 follows~

    Clasaifioation ot statistios

The oommodity futures atatistios presented in this bulletin 1'all into 1'1'118 princi'pa.l 01asse8 as 1'ollows: Tol\11118 of trading, open coutracts, tutures prices, oontraots settled by deliTery, aDd oommit.ents of reportin~ traders. Fram some of these 01as88s, other information is derived e These derived data are oommitments ot reportin~ traders as a percentage of open contracts, commitments of nOl~.porting traders, and commitments of noureporting traders as a percenta~e ot open oontracts. In all tables, zero (0) is used instead ot leaders where the market was open but there was no tradinr;.

    Volume of Trading

Eaoh olearing member ot eaoh oontraot ..rket .akes a daily report of all purchases and sales 01' oOJllllodit!' futures. A oompilation 01' these reports giTes the volume of trading in each commodity for eaoh market tor eaoh day. Since in each transaction there are two parties, one on the buying side and one on the 8811in~ side, the ag~rega~e of all purchases in one trading .ession is equal to the aggregate of all sales. Volume ct tradin~ figures are the total ot either purchases or aales. not of purchases and. sale8 oOJDbiMd.

In so.e markets two un1'Ca ot tradi~ are used, the rouncl lot (for example, 5,000 bushels) and the job lot (for example, 1,000 bushela). In .uoh cases the tr-adi~ in both lots ia oombined.

    Open Contraots

.A. tutures oontraot is 8aid to be "open" when it has been entered into and not yet liquidated by an offsetting tranaaction nor fulfilled by deliTerya

The amount of open contraots for eaoh t'!lOJllllodity and oontraot market is obtained each business day by a tabulation of reports made by exchange clearing members. The a~gregate of all 10hg open contraot. reported by clearing members equals the ag~egate of all short open contracts reported. The open contract figures shown are for one side only, not the long and short sides oombined. Where therewer9 open oontracts in both round and job lots, the totals of open contracts inolude both types.

    Futures PricE.',)

Official records of contract markets are the source of the price information in this bulletin. Closing prioes are shown by futures for the fifteenth and last day of each oalendar month Q Where no trades took place during the lI~lose,1I generally the closing seconds of trading, bid, asked, nominal, or settlement prices have been used, and are so indicated. For dates on whioh closing ranges were recorded th~ price shown is the average of the closing range. In other tables, the prices shown are the highest and the lowest reoorded during any trading session in the speoified peried.

    Contracts Settled by Delivery

A copy of each delivery Ilotice is furnished the Commodity Exchange Authority by the clearing member tendering suoh notice. A delivery notice is a documen"t prepared by the seller of a futures oontract by which he serves notice on the buyer that he intends to deliver on a specified day the commodi,ty oalled for in the contraot.. From these delivery notices and from reports of deliveries made by clearing members, the data on deliveries are compiled. The data show contracts Bettled by delivelj~ for each oommodity and market.

    Commitments of Reporting Traders

Any trader whose position in one future of any commodity reaches an amount specified by the Seoretary of Agriculture is required to report daily all his trades and positions in that oommodity to the Commodity Exchange Authority. In making this report he also has to show the classification of his position, that is, whether speoulative, spreading (straddling), or hedging.

The minimum amounts speoified for reporting during the fiscal year 1952 were as follows:

lrneat, corn, ~ats, rye, barley, flaxseed, soybeans 0" 200,000 bushels

Grain sorghums 11,200,000 pounds 1/ Cotton 5,000 bales -Wool tops ~ .. 125,000 pounds Butter, eggs, potatoes 25 carlots Cottonseed oil, soybean oil 900,000 pounds Lard, tallow e .. .. 600,000 pounds Millfeeds (bran, shorts, middlings) 1,000 tons Cottonseed meal~ soybean meal 1,500 tons Rice, milled 56,000 pockets
