    Committee to suggest ways to up conviction in

    In order to increase the conviction rate in criminal cases in Maharashtra,

    the statehad formed a four-mem ber committee, which includes an IPS

    officer.

    The committee will visit several states where conviction rate is h igh,

    conduct a study and give sugges tions on how the same can be achieved.

    A general resolution (GR) was is sued las t week regarding the formation of

    the committee. The committee is headed by SD Sankhe, director of

    directorate of law and judiciary and joint s ecretary to state home

    department, IPS officer Nikhil Gupta, director of Maharashtra Police

    Academy in Nashik, JD Supekar, superintendent of police wi th the state

    crime investigation department and Ravindra Khandagle, ass istant

    commis sioner of police, Mumbai Crim e Branch.

    Pay personal visits to those states in the country where conviction rate is

    high and conduct a s tudy as to what are the reasons for the high rate there

    and give suggestions as to what meas ures can be taken to increase the

    conviction rate in Maharashtra, the GR stated.

    The government has g iven the comm ittee a three-month deadline to subm it

    its report to the government along with the suggestions .

    We will visit few city police and rural police departments s oon and see

    what measures are adopted by them to increase the conviction rate, said

    one of the mem bers, reques ting anonymity.
