Scurrilous Scribblings

Hi All

Well, a happy new year and welcome back to you all. I hope Santa was kind and that

you all had a great holiday break. Even though we have not yet had a meeting for the

year, things have still been happening and there are plenty of rides to choose from over the coming weeks.

Ross has done a great write up of , which you can read elsewhere in this issue. I have added a couple of other photos for Les to publish if he has

space. The old lock-up at Ohura was a great place to stay. Sure the town is a bit on the space. The old lock-up at Ohura was a great place to stay. Sure the town is a bit on the close-to-ghost side of the entertainment ledger compared to Hanmer Springs, but as a

routes to ride there and back, and with great riding for the road and gravel riders from the base camp accommodation, which supplied reasonably priced quality comfort and

food, I think we will make this trip a regular feature of the calendar, alternating between

Hanmer Springs in the odd years (2015/2017 etc) and Ohura in the even years. That way we save a trip across the ditch to the South Island and back in the Southern AGM years

but still get to have a similar adventure.

And an adventure it was, right John? I would hate to think what would have happened if

Ron M had been riding behind on the Spyder and dragging on a smoke as he does from time to time. Fireball XL5 ???

If you riding up through that way, consider staying at the prison, as Colleen has arranged a 10% discount on accommodation for Ulysses members (you will need your current a 10% discount on accommodation for Ulysses members (you will need your current

membership card).

Unfortunately Colleen and I were unable to make the social ride on 2 Feb - I am typing

this just as the ride will be setting out to Murrayfield Café which is a bit of a bugger because it is a great day and a nice cafe. I have to be in Orcland all next week, so I need

to get this and some NatCom things done before I go. Mind you I will be spending the

week riding around Orcland, albeit mainly in the urban areas, on a Suzuki Gladius, so

that will be some compensation.

slow riding has gained a cult following, and is getting quite competitive. Learning how to handle your bike at low speed gives you more riding confidence in all

riding situations. To find out more about this be at the Dressmart car park in Tawa at

5:30 every second Wednesday (5th

, 19th Feb etc) or talk to Long John. If we can get a

good crew we can consider challenging other branches. good crew we can consider challenging other branches.

Contact Colleen if you want to be part of the mystery overnighter for 1st of March.

Banged up in Ohura

When the Aratere lost its propeller in Cook Strait and the The Interislander would

neither confirm nor deny our bookings, our hard-working rides committee decided an

alternative short stretch at the old Ohura prison would be just the ticket.

The forecast looked promising as twenty-odd of us assembled at Plimmerton weigh

station - bladders empty, and tanks overflowing. Especially John Medlin with an extra 5

litre jerry can strapped securely to the back of the wee Kwaka.

As we pootled north through the Kapiti Coast a few of us As we pootled north through the Kapiti Coast a few of us

were suspecting fuel leaks on our bikes. Soon John

Medlin was parked up a crack in his jerry can meant

that his extra 5 litres was now spread across Highway 1

and some of his fellow Ulyssians.

John Medlin did try to redeem himself by clearly marking the only real turning point on

State Highway 3 the roundabout at State Highway 4 leading to the Paraparas and

Raetihi. So, how did Mark Wilkins manage to almost run John down and head straight

into Whanganui? And why would Bernie follow? The sheriff has been informed!

The Parapara road is always good fun not too much traffic and a much-improved road

home (1:00 pm!!), and nobody else was allowed to serve food. Or maybe the cook was

just fearful of aging bikers! Anyway, dining alfresco on fish and chips from the only other

eatery in town was a very tasty alternative.

A quick cruise to Taumarunui, fuel, and then down the

back roads to Ohura where we were escorted to our

cells. And, very nice they were too. A roast meal,

pudding, with some social time in the sun watching Matt,

Paula, and Mark trying to erect a sun umbrella. Then

time for lights out.

When planning a bike trip out of Wellington, Ulyssians are limited to just two ways out

- you see a web of sealed and gravel routes

beckoning to all points of the compass.

So on Sunday the gravellers headed west to Ahititi and coffee at

Mokau, while the road riders took a number of routes via the tarmac to

Kawhia (Steve, you really do need to have your earplugs out at the ride

briefing!).

Delighted to have found a new can at Awakino Junction (where??), we

heading toward Kawhia via Marokopa and Te Anga through some of the twistiest, back roads I have ever ridden.

However, on the way thought we would detour at the Waikawau beach to go for a walk and a

paddle in the Tasman. John thought he should remove the new jerry can -

-

- a local cocky soon came along with a big grin

and the jerry can.

And the twisty bits just carried on and on! Awesome fun with John scratching away behind (until I had the common sense to signal him

past). Then on to Kawhia for a late lunch and time to share a few stories

with some of the departing road riders as they headed back to Ohura.

Back at base, once again prison tucker was excellent - tasty and plenty

of it. A few more stories, some strange bottles being pulled from

panniers, and then it was time for lockdown.

Monday dawned misty and overcast as we headed off early down the Forgotten World Highway. Another great twisty road through

rugged bush and farmland with coffee and freshly-baked

muffins at the Whangamomona Pub, and the then back to

treated like a big-capacity tourer and died just out of Eltham - a

serious lack of engine oil. And just as with the journey north, we all

- many suspecting flat tyres as

we headed through the Otaki straights. This time it was Mother Nature - the 6.3 Eketahuna earthquake.

It was a most excellent weekend away. Plenty of road and off-road

options, with great food and accommodation and above all - great company.

A huge thanks to Colleen Furneaux and helpers for organising the trip. L

19. Us & Them Cagers & Organ Donors (Stolen from Mind Over Motorcycle, by Kevin Williams)

Kevin Williams got a temporary job as a motorcyc

Part I.

The term Cager is used to refer to the driver of a car.

Some riders use it in a very derogatory way but many tend to use it as a type of shorthand for a car

driver. Even if we tend to use it in the second, non-offensive category, I really would suggest that

we try to get ourselves out of the habit.

Such use of language as a metaphor is more than a turn of speech, it really does affect our conceptual systems and thought processes, influencing how we perceive others, and in some cases,

determining our behaviour.

Dehumanising metaphors like 'cager' allow for the expression of aggressive sentiments and

attitudes, and distract from the reality of what we are in fact dealing with a person with a mind, ideas and motives of their own. They just happen to be in a car rather than on two wheels. By taking ideas and motives of their own. They just happen to be in a car rather than on two wheels. By taking

them out of the 'cage' and treating them as humans we begin to empathise more clearly with their

own problems.

Let's be honest here. How many of us with a bike licence also drive cars? Most of us, I'd guess. How many of us actually DON'T have a car licence? Very few I'd suspect. If I were writing this in

1975, I'd also hazard a guess that a significant proportion of readers would have had a bike before a

car.

I rode for twenty years before passing my car test, so perhaps it was mildly excusable that I had little grasp of the difficulties of driving a four wheeled vehicle. I'll happily admit that it wasn't until

after passing my test and putting some miles in on four wheels I began to have a better

when a motorbike disappears from view.

But now I'd guess that most bikers came to biking late via cars, rather than the other way round. So But now I'd guess that most bikers came to biking late via cars, rather than the other way round. So

why is it that riders who themselves were car drivers just a few days earlier make such a mental

about-turn after doing a short training course and a forty minute motorcycle test? What makes road

users who've adopted two wheels think that suddenly everyone on four wheels is an aggressive alien

species, a 'cager' out to kill them and disregard issues like blind spots? I doubt they'd admit that they were bikers when they were still on four wheels, so it seems strange to regard the rest

of the four wheeled community in that way.

That's not to say that car drivers becoming fledgling bikers don't learn new things whilst doing their motorcycle training course, because they do. A recurring theme at the end of a DSA (Driving

Standards Agency) course is It's true, car

drivers aren't aware how there are bike-specific problems like slippery surfaces that riders deal with

every day, but being uneducated doesn't make them 'ignorant', let alone homicidal.

Page 11: COMMITTEE 2013 Jan2014.pdf · JAN/FEB 2014 ISSUE 81 Wellington@ulysses.org.nz Wellington.sec@ulysses.org.nz COMMITTEE 2013 CO-ORDINATOR: Jim Furneaux 971-2893 021-2442091 furneaux@paradise.net.nz

There are a few highly skilled drivers out there, and doubtless there are a few who really are totally incompetent just as there are a few so psychopathic they shouldn't be allowed to use the roads. The majority of drivers out there are doing the best job they can with the skills they've got. And like all average people, doing any task whatsoever, they are fallible. And we've got all three sorts in the biking world too the really bad riders just tend to meet the ghost of Darwin rather sooner.

CHRISTMAS SLOW RIDE

Many thanks to all who helped setup and those that participated in the Gymkhana on Sunday before Xmas. I think we had more players and less spectators this time around and the credit for that has to go to Andrew Templeton with all the time he has given in training sessions for those that were keen, his encouragement and support at the Wednesday Night practice sessions, and then his assistance in the planning and running of this event.

It was great to see everyone getting on their bikes and having a go and I trust you should already be better when you need to do a u-turn or slip into a tight parking space.

It would seem that John Medlin lost his keys early in the day and rather than accept that we all lose our keys sometimes, he was untrusting and felt that some unscrupulous and scurrilous

As Woody, Pete Trousdall, Graham and I have planned an extensive South Island foray After the A.G.M.in April, it was thought appropriate that we should all get together for
