PRIMARY 6 GRADUATION AND THANKSGIVING CONCERT 2017 The Primary 6 Graduation and Thanksgiving Concert is an annual event for all Primary 6 students. It is the culmination of their 6 years of education in SACPS. The Thanksgiving Concert is a platform for our graduating classes to express their gratitude to their parents and teachers for their years of guidance and love. The 2017 Thanksgiving Concert, held on 16 November, was a musical entitled The Dream Chaser. The musical served as a reminder to everyone of us that we must never give up on our dreams and that we are important to the people in our lives. Under the direction of their Performing Arts, Music and Visual Art teachers, the Primary 6 students worked together for weeks to rehearse the script, choreograph the different items and design the props and costumes for the musical. There were numerous rehearsals and throughout the rehearsals, the students worked in teams cheerfully, each one fully committed to doing their best for their item. As a cohort, the students showed care, patience and support to each other during the preparation process, forging closer friendships and unity. The performance on the actual day touched the hearts of the proud parents of the Primary 6 students and the teachers. A short video presentation which depicted the girls’ 6 year journey in SACPS brought back many fond memories for them. The concert was a spectacular showcase of the students’ abilities and talents. It was a remarkable performance that emphasised the importance of never giving up on one’s dreams. Written by Mdm Audra Cardoza CYBER WELLNESS WEEK

Cyber Wellness Week was held from 20 to 23 February 2018 in conjunction with Safer Internet Day 2018. The theme for Safer Internet Day 2018 was Create, Connect and Share Respect: A Better Internet Starts with You. It aimed to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones amongst children and young people. The Cyber Wellness Week kicked off with an assembly talk. A series of activities were organised for the students to raise their awareness on the importance of using the internet safely and responsibly. These activities incorporated elements of online issues such as online civility, cyber bullying and fake news. During the various recesses, the students visited the booths to read up more about the topics. Videos on the use of the internet were also made available to them. Students were further engaged with iPad activities, quizzes and games related to Cyber Wellness. Students were also given an I am CyberSmart activity sheet to complete independently on their personal use of the internet. Through these activities, the students gained a better understanding of being a responsible and respectful internet user. Written by Ms Nuraishah

TOTAL DEFENCE DAY

The school commemorated Total Defence Day on 15 February 2018 with the theme Together We Keep Singapore Strong. Through an assembly play titled Survivor Stories by Drama Arts Company, the students were reminded of the hardships that our pioneers endured during the Japanese Occupation. The play was meaningful and relatable for the students and it helped to put into context the importance for Singaporeans to stay strong and united as a community. In the week prior to the commemoration of Total Defence Day, the CCE teachers led their students in class discussions and guided them in activities aimed to help them internalise the roles they can play for Total Defence. On the eve of Total Defence Day, the canteen served only sweet potato porridge as well as bee hoon during the various recesses. This served as a reminder to all students and staff of the hardships that our pioneer generation had gone through during the Japanese Occupation and how Singaporeans need to continue to play their part to keep Singapore strong and safe. The students also visited different game booths to test their knowledge of Singapore’s military personnel. Students also had the chance to pen down 5 items they would pack in the event of war. In addition, through the Total Defence Day video message by Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen, the students were reminded of the need for a strong military defence to keep Singapore safe and secure. The students learnt how they played a part to keep Singapore safe against new threats so that the nation can continue to prosper, progress and maintain this oasis of racial harmony with strong community bonding. This year’s commemoration was even more meaningful as Total Defence Day was on the same day as the eve of the Lunar New Year, similar to 1942, when Singapore fell to the Japanese on the first day of the Lunar New Year. The commemoration and various activities served to remind our students and staff of the importance of nationhood and protecting the country we call home.

PRIMARY 5 NATIONAL EDUCATION BEDOK LEARNING TRAIL

For the Primary 5 students who did not participate in the Learning Journey to Malacca, they had an educational Neighbourhood Trail around Bedok North Street 4 planned for them from 7 to 9 March 2018. They had the opportunity to learn more about the history and culture of Bedok through the traditional barber shops, confectionery, food centre and market. The activities also allowed them to apply scientific and mathematical concepts as well as writing skills. At the end of the educational trip, the students were then tasked to present a Bedok Town of the future, which showcased the key elements of Bedok that they would like to preserve and what they would change to make Bedok an even better town to live in. The students displayed much cheerfulness in going about their tasks as they explored the different parts of the neighbourhood, noticing things that they might not have noticed before. They also made use of many different materials to construct their Bedok of the Future. It was interesting for the teachers to listen to their views and insights of the elements they wanted to preserve and how they would incorporate different ideas to make Bedok an even more environmentally friendly town of the future. To complete the whole learning experience, traditional Singaporean toys of yesteryears were presented as prizes to each group of students for their efforts over the two days. It was indeed an enriching and meaningful learning experience for one and all both inside and outside of the classroom. Written by Mrs Perpetua Ho

PRIMARY 5 OVERSEAS CULTURAL IMMERSION LEARNING JOURNEY TO MALACCA

The school organised a two-day one-night Overseas Learning Journey to Malacca for the Primary 5 students from 7 to 8 March and 8 to 9 March 2018 respectively as part of the internationalisation experience. The aim of the learning journey was to create opportunities for students to appreciate the cultural, economic and social diversity of Malacca. The students visited the Baba and Nonya Museum to learn about the cultural practices and history of the Peranakans in Malacca. Besides the Baba and Nonya Museum, they also visited the Cheng Ho Museum to learn about the achievements of Admiral Cheng Ho as a diplomat and explorer in the early 15th Century. The students had a tour of the A’Farmosa Historical Complex and Jonker Street. Apart from visiting the historical landmarks in Malacca, the students also went on a school visit to Sacred Heart Canossian Convent. They presented to the Sisters, their gifts of love comprising of stationery and storybooks for the children. The students also performed a series of songs to the children. During the school visit, they had the opportunity to tour the Canossian Heritage Gallery where the Sisters shared with them about how the Canossian Mission began in Malacca. Through this, they saw how the Canossian Sisters lived out the familiar Canossian charism in Malacca, as well as identified with the students who shared the same school badge and school song. PRIMARY 4 AND PRIMARY 1 RECESS BUDDY SYSTEM The first week of school for all Primary 1 students is often full of uncertainty and insecurity as they embark on a new journey in primary school. To help the Primary 1 students adapt to the new school environment, Primary 4 students were given the important role of being big sisters to the younger students by being their buddy during recess. The Primary 4 students were each paired with a Primary 1 student to be their friend, show them how to queue up for food in an orderly manner as well as how to order and pay for their food. The Primary 1 students were also shown how to return their utensils to the correct receptacles after they had finished their food. Their buddies then showed them around the different parts of school and highlighted where the toilets, Parade Square and the General Office were. Through the buddy system, the Primary 1 students gained confidence in navigating their way around the school. The Primary 4 students were also happy to be given an opportunity to mentor their new friends. They demonstrated Cheerfulness and Compassion in their tasks and forged new friendships. HEALTH WEEK

A Health Week was organised for the students from 15 to 19 January 2018. The objective for Health Week was to remind students on the importance of staying physically active. Over the course of the week, students had the opportunity to try their hands at the various game stations such as shooting hoops and striking targets during their recesses. They also enjoyed dancing under the coaching of the Kpop instructor who taught them energising dance moves. The strong collaboration between the PE Department and Co-Canossian Educators (CCE) had made the event a success. The school is grateful for the immense support and enthusiasm from the team of CCEs in facilitating the recess activities. Their presence provided encouragement and motivation for the girls to stay active. Written by Mdm Michelle Chan

UNSTRUCTURED PLAY DURING RECESS In line with promoting the love for sports and a healthy lifestyle, the school had also embarked on Project HEAL (Healthy active lifestyle, Empowerment, Attitude, Love) to promote the holistic mental and emotional wellbeing of the students. One of the programmes under Project HEAL was the Unstructured Free Play dur-ing recess. With free access to a range of sports and games equipment, the students were encour-aged to keep active physically and to positively channel their energy as well as creativity. PRIMARY 4 WAYANG KULIT ENRICHMENT PROGRAMME Wayang Kulit is an ancient form of storytelling that originated from Indonesia. The master puppeteer manipulates the swiveling arms through the sticks attached to the puppets. The puppets are crafted from buffalo hide and mounted on bamboo sticks. When held up behind a piece of white cloth, with an electric bulb or an oil lamp as the light source, shadows are cast on the screen. As part of the Performing Arts curriculum this term, the Primary 4 students had the opportunity to create a story and stage a Wayang Kulit performance for the class. The performance was accompanied by the gamelan ensemble for their class. They made the shadow puppets come alive under the guidance of their instructor, Mr Aryanto, from Sri Warisan. Through this unique experience, the students learnt to appreciate this ancient Art form. Written by Ms Veron Yap

GIVE BACK PROJECT 2018

The Give Back Project has been a staple of the school’s Lunar New Year celebratory activities since 2013. Based on the concept of giving back to society, students and their parents donated consumables and food items to the less privileged families in the Fengshan constituency. This year, the students were encouraged to donate food items of a healthier variety, and also daily supplies specially selected to meet the needs of the residents. The students also created lovely Lunar New Year greeting cards with personalised greetings to be given with the gift items. The donated items were packed by the Primary 4 to Primary 6 Prefects and delivered to Fengshan Community Club on 31 January 2018. The gift bags were then distributed to the less privileged families during the Chinese Reunion Dinner held at the club. The Give Back project serves to remind our students that they have been abundantly blessed, and that it is their calling and duty to help others who are in need. Indeed, through their participation in this project, our students were given the platform to exemplify the school’s core value of Charity and to continue the good works of our Foundress. COMPASSION: To live each day in true Charity, Humility and Forgiveness

CANOSSIAN SAINTS’ WEEK 2018 The Canossian Saints’ Celebrations this year lasted for a week from 23 February to 1 March 2018. During the week, there were activities planned each day for the students. The theme for this year’s celebrations revolved around the school’s core values of Charity, Humility and Forgiveness and how, as Canossians, we could bring Hope to those around us. The celebrations began with a recess activity on 23 February whereby students and teachers were encouraged to think of ways to show charity to those around them, just as our Foundress, St Magdalene of Canossa, did. The students understood that Charity was not only about the giving of money to those in need, but was about spreading kindness and love to others, reaching out to others in their time of need, and having an unconditional love for them. On 26 February, the focus was on Humility and Forgiveness. Students were invited to write a note to a friend they would like to forgive. This powerful act of forgiveness enabled the students to show their humility and to accept that everyone made mistakes. Just like St Josephine Bakhita, the students chose to forgive those who had wronged them and to start their relationships anew. The focus on 27 February was on Hope. Students and staff took part in an art activity where they drew different symbols of Hope on the ground of the void deck using chalk. The result was a beautiful combined Canossian Symbol of Hope contributed by staff and students of the school. On 28 February, staff and students reflected on the lives of our Canossian Saints. They were reminded to continue to walk in the footsteps of St Magdalene and to stay committed in service to others, compassionate in reaching out to the less fortunate and to be cheerful in the way they carried out their tasks. The week ended with the Canossian Saints’ Day celebration on 1 March. The school was honoured to have Sr Christina Yeo, Provincial Leader of the Canossian Daughters of Charity, and the Canossian Sisters to grace the occasion. The day began with a Eucharistic Celebration with Fr Terence Kesavan as the celebrant. The celebration ended with Fr Terence giving a special blessing to the Catholic Students’ Council Leaders. The Catholic Students’ Council, which is part of the Student Leadership body, would lead the way in serving others with Commitment, Compassion and Cheerfulness. Following the Eucharistic Celebration was the Gift of Song. Students performed their level songs which they had learnt during their Music lessons. The Primary 3 students started the show by singing the song Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head, a song written by Hal David and Burt Bacharach for the 1969 film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The Primary 1 level awed the school with their rendition of The Hills are Alive from the popular musical The Sound of Music. The Primary 5 took the stage next with their song, One Single Light, which spoke of hope. The Primary 2 students captivated the school with the song, The Rainbow Connection. The Primary 6 students enthralled the audience with a beautiful version of their song, Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep and the Primary 4 students sang their version of Make a Song For My Heart to Sing. The teachers also performed a surprise item and sang Tomorrow from the musical, Annie, led by the Music teachers. As part of the celebrations, the students were given a notebook as a souvenir to commemorate the school’s theme of One Heart One Will. The 2018 Canossian Saints’ Celebrations was indeed a memorable and

meaningful one for the students and staff. Written by Ms Chantel Beins

PREFECTS’ INVESTITURE 2018

The Prefects’ Investiture Ceremony is held annually to recognise and empower Student Leaders to follow in St Magdalene’s footsteps. The ceremony provides recognition for prefects who have displayed good leadership qualities as well as remind them of their duty to serve the Canossian student community with grace, dignity and justice. The 2018 investiture began with the Head Girl, Vanessa Lee, together with the Assistant Head Girls, Germaine Danker and Emily Leong, leading the rest of the Executive Committee and the Prefects of SACPS in a march into the school hall. They each held an item of significance – the School Flag that signified the Prefects’ promise and loyalty to the school, a candle that represented the Light of Wisdom, Integrity and Compassion and a Book of Elect which recorded the names of all Canossian Prefects throughout the years. During the ceremony, the Guest of Honour, Sister Geraldine, installed the new Prefect Executive Committee and 48 new Prefects. The ceremony ended with Vanessa, the Head Girl, giving a speech and the Assistant Head Girl, Germaine, leading the Prefects in reciting the Prefect pledge as a mark of their promise and commitment to serve the school with pride and integrity. The school hopes that our Prefects will exemplify the true spirit of St Magdalene and St Bakhita by becoming Leaders with a Heart For Others as they serve the school with Commitment, Compassion and Cheerfulness. We also recognised other student leaders who served the school out of love by inviting them to take the St Anthony’s Canossian Primary School Student Leaders’ Pledge. Chen Pei Yu from 6 Temperance, President of Concert Band, led the following group of leaders to recite the pledge:

By reciting this pledge, the leaders committed themselves loyally as student leaders to the school and to always put duty before self.
