CED is committed to promoting sound policies that are in the best long-term interests of our country. CED’s current priorities include addressing our structural and unsustainable budget deficits, health care and entitlement reform, and education. Restoring our nation’s fiscal health is a major priority for 2010 and beyond.

We are pleased this year to serve as host of the Annual Meeting of CED’s International Counterpart Network of Private Business Organizations. We welcome our partners and look forward to a robust program of forums to discuss restoring fiscal health and economic growth in this new decade.

The Distinguished Performance Awards Program honors business leaders who have answered CED’s call for leadership.

Indra Nooyi is receiving the Peter G. Peterson Business Statesmanship Award for her commitment to creating long-term sustainable value and focusing on responsible capitalism. Indra’s impact on PepsiCo’s strategic vision is significant.

McDonald’s and Jim Skinner are receiving the Global Leadership Award for leading in environmental sustainability and conservation; protecting animal welfare; and being part of the solution to global nutritional concerns.

FedEx and Fred Smith are being recognized with our Corporate Citizenship Award for focusing on a people-first philosophy and instilling a strong commitment to social responsibility, community development, and environmental concerns.

W. Bowman Cutter is being honored with the Trustee Leadership Award for the exceptional leadership he provided as our Co-Chairman from 2006 to 2008 and for his guidance of CED’s policy studies, including our current efforts to restore Fiscal Health.

Dan Rose is also being recognized with the Trustee Leadership Award for his unparalleled support for early childhood development and education programs. Dan gives back to society and sets an example for others to follow.

The Committee for Economic Development is an independent, nonprofit and nonpartisan business-led organization that addresses the critical economic and social policy issues facing the United States.

CED was founded in 1942 to improve the communication between business and government as a way to strengthen the post-war economy. In 1945, CED’s critical work influenced the Bretton Woods Agreement, which established the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Three years later, CED’s report on “An American Program of European Economic Cooperation” outlined a strategy that inspired the Marshall Plan. CED’s first Chairman, Paul Hoffman, the CEO of Studebaker later accepted President Harry Truman’s call to lead the agency that administered the Marshall Plan.

Continuing in that spirit today, CED’s Trustees bring the best of business thinking to bear on critical public policy issues for the nation’s interest – to achieve a strong U.S. economy, sustainable public finances, a healthy and educated workforce, sound democratic institutions, a vibrant public education system, and a competitive role in open global trade.

That mission – seeking the nation’s interest rather than any partisan, ideological, personal or commercial interest – distinguishes CED from many other business organizations. This approach also ensures the integrity and objectivity of CED’s work, which enhances its effectiveness and credibility.

Trustees guide CED’s research agenda through Policy Subcommittees which meet regularly throughout the year to identify key public policy issues and formulate and conduct individual research projects. CED Trustees are also active in helping the organization achieve significant impact in each of its policy areas. CED has ongoing Subcommittees in the following areas:

Fiscal Health – CED continues to be the leading business voice for sound, responsible fiscal policy to maintain U.S. prosperity. CED explains to elected policymakers, from a business perspective, why sound budget policy is essential to avoid crisis and achieve growth. Achieving fiscal health in the wake of the current economic and financial crisis will require years of hard work and difficult choices. Workable solutions call for business creativity and leadership, and CED plays an essential role in this effort.

CED’s Fiscal Health Subcommittee has worked to inform the public of the seriousness of the nation’s fiscal crisis, and to hold policymakers responsible for addressing the problem in a bipartisan fashion, rather than seeking to score political points. To these ends, the Subcommittee has prepared a public statement from business leaders, an innovative document for the public at large to illustrate the risks, and a plan to break

the impasse over the expiring tax cuts, stimulate the economy in the near term, and to make a binding commitment for responsible budgeting in the long run. CED has launched an endorsement campaign to showcase business support for the principles of the statement. As part of this work, CED will continue to press policymakers to achieve quality, affordable health care for all as an essential step toward fiscal responsibility.

Education – CED is the recognized business leader in the campaign for early education, demonstrating its payoff in later educational achievement, citizenship, and productivity. CED also has also worked to improve the quality of elementary and secondary education, encourage reform of teacher compensation policies, and promote stronger math and science education. CED is launching a new project aimed at increasing student access to and success in postsecondary education while maintaining educational rigor and quality. Improving the performance of the nation’s postsecondary institutions is essential to preparing individuals for the demands of 21st century jobs and citizenship.

Globalization – In troubling economic times, when there is the prospect of protectionism, CED reminds the United States and the world of the need for free and open trade. CED has also made the case for education in foreign studies and critical foreign languages to promote national security, competitiveness, and economic growth.

Democratic Institutions – For over a decade, CED has been the leading business voice for campaign finance reform. CED has redoubled its work with respect to both federal offices and the selection of an independent judiciary. CED has made the business case for greater openness and disclosure, and has urged companies to avoid making undisclosed expenditures in political campaigns.

Corporate Governance – CED’s work explains how corporations (and corporate leaders) have lost credibility through short-sighted and overly self-interested behavior, and how they – their shareholders, directors, and managers – can rebuild the public trust and focus on enduring, long-term value. Ongoing work focuses on how the firm can build strong ethical and performance standards into its culture through Board efforts and CEO leadership. A new effort is focused on the role institutional shareholders can play in improving corporate governance and performance.

As the nation faces daunting economic and social challenges with deteriorating trust in many public institutions – most notably business – CED’s work and its approach remain critical. We seek to rebuild trust in American business because we consider that trust to be an essential element in a vibrant American economy and a strong democracy.

The Peter G. Peterson Award for Business Statesmanship was established to recognize business executives who champion issues that are in the best interest of the public good, rather than their company or personal interests, and hold themselves to the highest standards of ethics and integrity.

CED is proud to recognize Indra Nooyi, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of PepsiCo, for her commitment to improving the integrity of corporate leadership, creating long-term

sustainable value, and focusing on overall responsible capitalism. Her leadership is an example for all executives to follow.

For over 16 years, Mrs. Nooyi’s impact on PepsiCo’s mission and strategic vision has been felt throughout the company. She is the chief architect of PepsiCo’s, Performancewith Purpose, a program which marries financial success and social responsibility.

Mrs. Nooyi believes that you can’t measure the performance of a company without taking into account its impact on the world. She has used this philosophy to make PepsiCo both an extremely profitable as well as community-minded corporation.

Before joining PepsiCo in 1994, Mrs. Nooyi excelled in management and corporate strategy positions at Asea Brown Boveri, Motorola, The Boston Consulting Group, and Johnson & Johnson.

In addition to serving as a member of the PepsiCo Board of Directors, Mrs. Nooyi lends her experience and insight as a member of the boards of U.S.-China Business Council, U.S.-India Business Council, The Consumer Goods Forum, Catalyst, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and the Grocery Manufacturers Association. She is also a Successor Fellow of the Yale Corporation and was appointed to the U.S.-India CEO Forum by the Obama Administration.

Distinguished Performance Award for Excellence In Public Policy

Hewlett-Packard Company

Léo Apotheker is chief executive officer and president of HP and a member of the company’s board of directors. He has served in these roles since joining HP on Nov. 1, 2010. As CEO of the world’s largest information technology company, Apotheker is helping lead HP into a new phase of growth by focusing on innovation, employee engagement and operational efficiency.

Prior to joining HP, Apotheker served as CEO of SAP and as a member of SAP’s executive board from 2002 until 2010. He

began his career at SAP in 1988 and, over the next 20 years, was integral in helping build the company into one of the world’s leading providers of enterprise software. During this time, Apotheker gained a reputation as an outstanding manager of customer relationships, an acute business strategist and a technological thought leader.

Apotheker was born in Aachen, Germany and graduated with a B.A. in economics and international relations from Hebrew University, Jerusalem. He is fluent in English, Dutch, French, German and Hebrew and was awarded the French Légion d’honneur in 2007.

He currently serves as vice chairman of the supervisory board of Schneider Electric SA and is a member of the board of directors of GT Nexus and the board of PlaNet Finance, a not-for-profit organization.

The Excellence in Public Policy Award is presented to a company with a strong commitment to social responsibility and whose leaders are actively engaged in the company’s efforts to address key public policy issues facing our society. We highlight companies and CEOs who have made social responsibility a part of their core business strategies.

This year, CED has selected HP for this award in recognition of its exceptional dedication to aligning global citizenship strategies with core strategies and principles. We also applaud HP’s strong commitment to sustainability and innovation and to using technology to enhance education, health care, and global development.

CED is pleased to highlight the far-reaching initiatives McDonald’s is leading in environmental sustainability; conservation and protection of supply chains; improving work conditions; protecting animal welfare; and being part of the solution around global nutritional concerns.

Ray Kroc founded McDonald’s in 1955 with a clear vision to create “a happy place” – convenient, affordable, and a pleasant way of eating quality food for a newly mobile, optimistic America.

Today, Jim Skinner leads this iconic and enduring brand with 32,000 restaurants in 117 countries. McDonald’s serves 60 million customers each day and employs 1.7 million people across the globe in corporate and restaurant positions.

Mr. Skinner’s first job was working in his neighborhood McDonald’s restaurant in Davenport, Iowa while in high school. After 10 years in the U.S. Navy, he returned to McDonald’s as a restaurant manager trainee in 1971…and never looked back. He was elected Chief Executive Officer in November, 2004 and set three top priorities for his leadership: long-term sustainable growth for the company; talent management and leadership development; and promoting balanced active lifestyles. As a result of these efforts, McDonald’s is enjoying strong year-over-year results. In recognition of this success, Mr. Skinner was named “2009 CEO of the Year” by Chief Executive magazine.

McDonald’s is committed to making a difference around the globe, working with respected NGOs to advance policies, programs and progress related to critical social and environmental challenges and opportunities. Key highlights include McDonald’s partnership with Environmental Defense Fund to make packaging more sustainable; its leadership on Sustainable Fisheries Programs in partnership with Conservation International; and working with Greenpeace and others to prevent deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest. For Jim Skinner and McDonald’s, it’s all about continuous improvement and actions that speak louder than words.

FedEx is a leader in innovation and pioneered the use of the Internet as a business tool to enable customers to track their own packages. But the reach of FedEx is broader than delivering shipments. The company is passionate about connecting

CED is pleased to recognize W. Bowman Cutter as an exemplary leader, thoughtful advisor, and committed Trustee.

Bo served as CED’s Co-Chairman from 2006 to 2008 and led a strategic planning initiative, helping to guide our organization through a period of transition and growth.

Today, Bo serves as Co-Chair of CED’s initiative addressing Fiscal Health. His strong background in the financial sector and as an economic policy advisor adds significant insights to our deliberations.

Outside of CED, Bo is a committed partner with many other community groups. He is currently the chairman of CARE, the global development organization, where he has been a member of the board for 15 years. He also is a founder and current chairman of MicroVest, a leading global microfinance fund.

This year, Bo was elected Chairman of Resources for the Future, an influential group whose mission is to improve environmental and natural resource policymaking worldwide. In addition, he is a member of the Governing Council of the IFMR Trust focusing on market based solutions to the problems of severe poverty in India.

In 2009, Bo became a Senior Fellow and Director of the Economic Policy Initiative at the Roosevelt Institute. From 1996 to 2009, Bo was a managing director of Warburg Pincus, a major global private equity firm in New York, where he served as both the firm’s economist and as a leader in its international business.

Bo has also had a distinguished career in the public sector, having served with distinction in two Democratic presidencies. He was Director of the National Economic Council and Deputy Assistant to the President for President Bill Clinton and Executive Director for Budget at the Office of Management for President Jimmy Carter.

We are proud to have Bo’s leadership on the Board and thank him for the many contributions he has made to our programs.

Distinguished Performance Award For Trustee Leadership

Rose Associates, Inc.

Dan Rose is a long-standing Trustee of CED’s Board who has provided exceptional leadership of our programs, particularly early childhood development and education.

Dan is a champion for early childhood education in New York City and beyond. His impassioned message focuses on the need to prepare a better foundation for America’s youth, particularly minorities and the disadvantaged, and the important role business can play in achieving that goal. Dan is a tireless advocate for

early formative experiences and devotes much of his energy to ensuring all children have every opportunity to succeed and become well-rounded members of society.

Dan, with his family, is also a generous philanthropist and an active member in New York City’s cultural institutions, including the Rose Center for Earth and Space at the Natural History Museum, the New York Public Library, and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. He is also a generous supporter of Yale University, his alma mater. Dan’s particular passion has been the Harlem Educational Activities Fund, a nonprofit that he founded in 1991 to help students from Harlem and Washington Heights get into top-notch high schools and colleges.

In addition to his many CED and community activities, Dan regularly teaches, lectures, and writes on a variety of real estate and planning subjects. Dan’s career in public service is also impressive. He served as an expert advisor to the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and as a consultant to the Commissioner of Education for the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare. Dan was appointed by President Clinton as Vice Chairman of the Baltic-American Enterprise Fund.
