FAST FORWARD Virginia is offsetting the tuition on select workforce training programs at community colleges by two-thirds with the new FAST FORWARD grant. Incentive funds to offset the cost of tuition on certain high-demand credentials programs are now available and these programs are open for enrollment. Eligible participants will pay just one-third the cost of tuition, provided the student completes the program and earns a passing grade. Students needing additional financial assistance for the remaining 1/3 may be eligible to receive additional funds. Call Brooke Shehan at (540) 863-2848 for more information.

Commercial Driver’s License Program (CDL Class A)

Each CDL Class A course starts with classroom sessions on two successive Saturdays from 8am to 5pm, Room 502, McCarthy Hall, on the DSLCC main campus in Clifton Forge. Following the classroom sessions, students will be prepared to take the DMV written test and obtain their provisional (learner’s) permit, after which, students will schedule 16 hours of one-on-one behind-the-wheel training. After completing behind-the-wheel training, an instructor will accompany the student in our vehicle to the DMV test site to take the road test.

There are no prerequisites, but students should have basic reading comprehension and writing skills. All testing is conducted in English. Funding may be available for Virginia residents through the Workforce Credentials Grant. To enroll for the CDL course call (540) 863-2899 or email [email protected].

Students must obtain and present proof of a DOT physical prior to any behind-the-wheel training. Tuition does not cover the cost of the physical (approx. $100), or DMV CDL-A license fees.

Certified Nursing Assistant Starts Oct 18

Nurse aides are important members of the health care team. Prospects for employment are very good in most areas and jobs may be found in a variety of settings, such as hospitals, long-term care facilities, and home health agencies. All students are required to submit to a background check and drug screen through CastleBranch prior to attending the clinical sessions.

Covers basic care skills with emphasis on physical, social, emotional, and spiritual needs of patients. Covers procedures, communications and interpersonal relations; observation, charting and reporting; care planning, safety and infection control; anatomy and physiology, nutrition and patient feeding; ethics, death and dying. Prepares multi-skilled health care workers to care for patients of various ages with special emphasis on geriatric nursing, home health, long and short term care facilities. Lecture 3 hours per week.

Applies theory through laboratory experience for health care technicians to work in home health, long and short term facilities. Lecture 1 hour. Laboratory 6 hours. Prerequisite: background check and drug screen.

This comprehensive 50-hour program will prepare students to work as a pharmacy technician in a retail or other pharmacy setting and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam. Course content includes pharmacy medical terminology, the history of pharmacy, the pharmacy practice in multiple environments, pharmacy calculations and measurements, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Through classroom lecture and hands on labs, students will review dosage calculations, drug classifications, the “top 200 drugs,” I.V. flow rates, sterile compounding, dose conversions, aseptic technique, the handling of sterile products, total parental nutrition (TPN), dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control and billing and reimbursement.

Introduction to Herbal Healing Immerse yourself in the world of Herbalism with this 6-week course, and come away knowing how to apply the benefits of medicinal herbs into your personal health and wellness plan. Herbalist and Aromatherapist, Chin Velasquez, designed this course for beginners who want to learn about herbs and start using them in their daily lives. Students will learn how to formulate various herbal products, including herbal teas, tinctures (extracts), syrups, oxymels, salves, crèmes, and body oils. Learn to identify many herbs growing in the wild as well as those cultivated in the garden. In-depth discussion of harvest techniques, drying and storing of herbs. The last class session is entitled, “Creating Your Home Kitchen Apothecary.”

EMS The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program at DSLCC offers a wide variety of continuing education courses during the school year. Many are held on weekends in the EMS classroom and lab in Warren Hall on the DSLCC Clifton Forge campus. Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (Drone) Qualification Course

This is a 1-day ground school course designed to prepare enrollees to operate small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) aircraft within the airspace of the United States and its territories in accordance with the rules and regulations established by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) 14 CFR Part 107. Success in this Course will prepare graduates to sit for the FAA CFR Part 107 Remote Pilot Airmen Certificate test, and to safely and legally operate sUAS vehicles under 55 lbs. weight.

Flight Training on Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (Drones) This 1-day hands-on course is designed to qualify enrollees for pre-flight and flight operation of a sUAS aircraft (drone). Enrollment relies upon successful completion of Qualification Course but does not require possession of a valid sUAS license from the FAA. The instructor shall furnish the drone and the student will log two hours of actual flight preparation and flight time performing tasks typical of commercial drone operations. Skills taught will include mission definition, preparation for flight, weight and balance, mission execution, basic and advanced flight maneuvers and more.

EPA 608 Designed for Air Conditioning and

Refrigeration technicians. Participants will attend a 4-hour class and then take the EPA 608 certification exam. Career Readiness Certificate (CRC) The Career Readiness Certificate (CRC) is a nationally recognized

career credential that can help both job seekers and employers. Individuals may earn the CRC by taking the three Core WorkKeys Assessments: Applied mathematics, Locating Information, and Reading for information.

The assessments measure “real world” skills that employers believe are critical to job success and questions are based on everyday situations found in the working environment. Individuals who earn a CRC will be awarded a Bronze, Silver or Gold level based upon their scores. The three CRC levels correspond to job listing on the O*NET (Occupational Information Network). The cost of all three assessments is $51. Test-takers should allow 3 hours to complete all three assessments.

It has become the industry standard for serious photographers from around the world. Students will learn how to import, organize, rate and tag images, and then output them in a variety of ways: print, slideshow, books, and web galleries. Upon completion, students should understand how to import their images into Lightroom; how to edit, refine, or get creative using Lightroom tools; and how to output images from Lightroom to a variety of destinations.

Students will need to bring their own laptop computers and have Lightroom loaded. Intermediate Image Editing (4 sessions) 2120004/ This course provides students an in depth look at the tools needed to create realistic photo compositions, how to restore damaged or faded photos, and how to colorize a black & white photo. In addition to understanding and using Layers, masks, & modes, students will also learn to use the various methods of selecting elements from one image and introducing them into another. In order to be successful in this class, students should have a good working knowledge of basic Photoshop functions including opening, closing, and saving a file.
