Some Examples of a Building Well-Suited to Saving Energy…
• Owner occupied• Multi-shift or 24 hour buildings• 50,000-300,000 sq. ft.• 5 years or older• Sustainability initiatives in place or pending
– Including JCAHO– NFPA 70E (Arc Flash)– Federally mandated energy savings initiatives– Corporate mandated energy savings initiatives
![Page 9: Commercial and Government Energy Savings Applications and Solutions.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062423/56649eb25503460f94bb9991/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Why Energy Efficiency?
• Energy cost savings is the most significant factor motivating energy efficiency investment among healthcare organizations, with 88% saying cost savings is very or extremely important, and 99% saying it is at least somewhat important.
• Enhancing public image and taking advantage of government and/or utility incentives are the next most important motivating factors.
• It is no surprise that energy cost savings is such a significant motivator. As with other industries nearly two-thirds of healthcare decision-makers expect their energy prices to increase over the next 12 months. On average, healthcare leaders surveyed expect prices to increase by 5% over this period.
• Healthcare respondents tend to believe that lighting and smart building technologies will be the clean energy technologies that see the greatest performance-to-price ratio improvements over the next 10 years.
D. Supple, 2010, Institute for Building Efficiency: 2010 Energy efficiency indicator, Healthcare Sector, Johnson Controls, pp.26

Energy Savings…
In addition to offering health benefits, energy conservation benefits a hospital’s bottom line.
The EPA estimates that a $1 savings in annual energy costs is equivalent to an increase of $20 in annual revenue, based on a 5 percent net operating margin.
U.S. Department of Energy Information Agency, 2012

Why is Energy Management Important?
• Identify trending in energy use for your operations– What, how much, where are we using energy– Why we use what we do– Commonly known as “base-lining”
• You can’t fix what you can’t measure
• Optimization of operations– Using what you do…efficiently
• Reducing costs• Providing a positive return on investment (ROI) to the
facility owner/operator
![Page 12: Commercial and Government Energy Savings Applications and Solutions.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062423/56649eb25503460f94bb9991/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Four Ways to Quick Energy Savings
• Measure Consumption– Establish a benchmark and measure progress
• Fix the Basics– VFDs in motors, pumps, HVAC or High Efficiency UPS
• Automate– Eliminate reliance on human behavior
• Monitor– Use s/w to monitor, I.D. waste trends and continuously
improve

Lighting
• 85 billion sq. ft. currently being lit commercially
• Lighting of commercial/ healthcare facilities typically uses 50% of total building energy use
• Implementing measures to save energy is all about your ROI

Savings
• Annual energy savings from LED lighting in 2010…was approximately 3.9 Twh, equivalent to the electricity needed to power more than 250,000 avg. U.S. households.*
• 41% of this savings was due to the use of LEDs for parking lot and garage lighting.*

Lighting Controls*
• Though lighting represents about 17.5% of all global electricity consumption,
only a small percentage of the lighting in commercial buildings is controlled by
anything other than an ON/OFF switch
• More and more lighting control systems are networked and centrally controlled,
enabling them to be connected to building energy management systems
(BEMS) and Smart Grid applications
• In addition to the drive to cut energy consumption, there is recognition that
lighting control systems can contribute to the pursuit of green building
certifications, an interest in increasing the amount of natural light available to
occupants, and a desire to provide people with more control over the light levels
in their work environments

What Exactly are Lighting Controls?
• Dimmers allow users to manually regulate the level of lighting in a building by adjusting the voltage reaching the lamp. As voltage input is reduced, either by way of a step function or a continuous function, the lumen output of the system is proportionally decreased.
• Light sensors/Daylight Harvesters, or photocells, also work by dimming or by on/off cycling. In response to detected light levels, light sensors regulate the lumen output in order to supplement available natural light with an optimized level of artificial lumen output.
• Motion detectors, or occupancy sensors, switch the lamp on for a set period of time in response to detected motion and are useful in areas that are sporadically occupied. This control type saves energy by reducing hours of operation of lighting.
• Timers provide lighting service on a preset schedule, without the need for manual operation. This control type also saves energy by reducing hours of operation.
• Energy management systems are information and control systems that monitor occupancy and lighting in the built environment in order to provide centralized lighting control. They often combine several of these control technologies to reduce energy consumption.
