An alternative method is to right-click on any toolbar at the top of the Word window.

Select “Show” and check the “Comments” option.

The way in which comments are displayed depends, in part, on which page view option is selected in the “View” menu.

As with most elements of MS Word there are other ways of displaying comments. You might also try selecting “View Markup”. This will show all mark-up elements on the document – this includes comments.

Comment: Here is a comment showing the leading line which indicates where the comment “belongs” in the flow of the document.
