COMMENT AND ANALYSIS

FDE | www.the-financedirector.com

The role of the European finance director has changed dramatically in recent years, with corporate leadership emerging as the key focus of the FD’s endeavours. Published since 1992, Finance Director Europe has gained a reputation for informative and authoritative coverage of the challenges which increased strategic influence brings.

Through our print publication and online resource centre, we provide a valuable European perspective on finance directors’ most pressing issues: corporate finance, enterprise risk management, audit and tax, business performance management, technology, and human resources. We aim to captivate and inform a powerful audience of decision-makers, offering strategic thinking to help them create, lead and transform their businesses.

Finance Director Europe is international in its coverage, independent in its positioning and provocative in its tone. Topical and pan-European in the issues covered, articles are written by Europe’s leading business and finance journalists as well as the continent’s most renowned finance directors.

With contributions from organisations such as the IASB, Tesco, Centrica, Henkel, Royal Ahold, ING Group, Publicis and Deutsche Bank, each article charts and reflects the increased power and authority of the FD within the ever more challenging European business environment.

Our goal is straightforward: to be the leading strategic journal for European financial directors.

MAXIMISING YOuR MARKETING POTENTIAL

● The big interview Nicolas Peter took on the role of CFO at

BMW on 1 January 2017. His appointment comes as Mercedes is set to outsell BMW for the first time in 10 years, and when the company is set to increase its high-end models to help finance a transition to self-driving, electric cars. Finance Director Europe speaks to Peter to discuss his strategy for increasing BMW’s profitability as the company is set to regain its leading position against Mercedes. As Peter was formerly the European sales lead we also discuss the transition from moving roles within a company and how his previous skills will be used in his role as the CFO.

● Digital innovation Ericsson reported an 11% annual fall in net

sales in Q2 of 2016. This was largely due to mobile broadband investment in countries that have had major macroeconomic impact from oil price reduction, lack of hard currency, or both. The strategy from now on is to make sure Ericsson is a leader in mobile broadband; it also wants to improve the revenue it gets from operators in transforming new types of networks. Jan Frykhammer, CFO, explains what role the finance function will play in helping this strategic shift.

Novartis is using a virtual TV conference platform to engage with healthcare professionals (HCPs). The changes come as new European pharma industry rules came into effect last week on HCP payment transparency, requiring firms to disclose their payments to HCPs for activities such as travel to congresses. FDE speaks with Harry Kirsch, CFO about the company’s increased investment in digital technology why he see it as important to bring the digital service directly to customers.

● Risk management Metso Corporation in Finland has set up

a process to align all risk management operations with the company’s strategy and business objectives. Regardless of the world’s political changes or potential cyber threats the company has been set up to be resilient, and still able to communicate with multiple stakeholders. Winner of FERMA’s risk manager of the year award, Heljo Laukkala, vice president, corporate risk management, explains why preparing for all risks has helped to stabilise the business.

● Treasury and cash management Since Great Britain voted to leave the EU

the pound has fallen and as a result finance teams are hedging their funds in order to

EDITORIAL FEATuRES SuMMER 2017 CONTINuED

manage their foreign exchange risk. Sarah Boyce, policy and technical director at the Association of Corporate Treasurers (ACT) explains how important it is for the hedging strategy to align with the board and shareholders’ attitude to risk, looking at profit margins and/or cash flow for the next year.

Greencore, an international manufacturer of convenience foods, has refinanced

its debt facilities. The extra financing of £300 million pounds was from a ten-bank syndicate. It has meant the company has been able to invest in its business and grow. Noel Brady, head of treasury, explains the process for refinancing with the involvement of a number of partners and how it has helped developed Greencore’s core businesses.

● Fleet and mobility management AstraZenca’s global category manager fleet, Andy Leeden, winner of Fleet

Manager of the Year Award for 2016, has successfully developed a worldwide strategy for 19,000 vehicles that enables the everyday running of his fleet across 72 countries, with a 100% implementation in Europe and North America. He introduced a common fleet standard in Europe across 32 markets, partnering HR and safety and health and environment, in order to optimise total cost of ownership, with a focus on all employees driving on business, not only company car drivers. Leeden discusses how this resulted in a 14% reduction in fleet cost base over a four-year fleet lifecycle.

● Globalisation The one size fits all approach no longer works and contracts have to work on a

global scale. FDE speaks with Professor Ian Goldin, professor of globalisation and development; fellow of Ballior College, Oxford University, about the challenges that CFOs face when investing overseas and how to handle different economies and tolerate the risks.

Foreign investment in Asia has presented increasing opportunities for Europe. We speak to Suman Bery, non-resident scholar, Pravakar Sahoo, scholar from

Bruegel, a European think tank specialising in Economics about trade policies in Asia and prospects, cross-border investment, financial sector governance and reform and economic regulation.

● Human capital management VW will be recruiting more than 1,000 IT experts over the next three years from

overseas; half will be employed in Wolfsburg, Germany. The aim is to expand the company’s expertise in AI, big data, virtual reality and smart production. Dr Karlheinz Blessing, member of the board of management responsible for human resources, explains why the investment in this skills expansion will help the company grow and increase ROI in the following areas: digitalisation, software development, E-mobility, autonomous driving and mobility services. Blessing also discusses the regulations surrounding visa applications, expatriate training and payroll systems when employing staff from overseas.

● Robotic process automation Zurich Group finance operations function is focusing on the use of robotic

application and core systems strategic change to optimise automation outcomes. Dean Smith, finance operations, head of shared services performance, discusses how using robotic automation can be a positive game changer for the finance teams but can also distract the business from dealing with underlying issues such as, disjointed organisations, inefficient processes and poor technologies.

● Governance risk and compliance In May 2016 the official text of the reformed data protection laws was released

by the European Commission. It will become law in 2018. It gives authorities more power to take action against EU and non-EU companies that breach data protection rules. As companies have become increasingly reliant on using consumer data to help increase revenue the new ruling could have a negative impact on profitability. We speak to Andrus Ansip, vice president for the digital single market, as to what companies are expected to do in order to comply.
