Headmaster’s Commendations

Year 2 Garden Volunteer Needed

Two pairs of our Year 6 mathematicians travelled to Eagle House for an exciting Maths Challenge.

They took part in three different events, Find the values, Countdown and The Big Event which included a mixture of mathematical problems. It was a fun and very active afternoon with pupils running up and down to get the next challenge! Eesha Kaur, Matthew O’Donoghue, Bethan Williams and Nikita Zubkov were up against thirty-nine other schools, making a total of eighty groups! Eesha and Matthew finished in an excellent twelfth place and Bethan and Nikita achieved a very respectable 19th place.

Well done to all four of our mathematicians.

Maths Challenge

Last year’s Year 2 children really enjoyed working in their own garden during the spring and summer terms. Watching their plants spring to life, their vegetables and fruit ripen and their flowers bloom is a truly wonderful experience for them.

Alex who organised the Year 2 gardening last year is stepping down. We are incredibly grateful to her and to all the parents who have helped her for their hard work and enthusiasm.

Year 2 would love to find another parent or grandparent who would like to take over Alex’s mantle. If you would like to help and are able to commit to coming to school on Friday afternoons please contact Vanessa Nightingale.

Year 2 BakingYear 2s literacy has been based on Jack and her beanstalk and Jim and the Beanstalk. This week the children have rewritten the story

using their own story plans. On Thursday afternoon they had a carousel of activities as the finale to the topic including; making the longest leafiest beanstalk they could from newspapers, reading a script and acting out the story of Jack and making shortbread leaf biscuits from scratch. They worked in small groups and tried to use their collaborative and leadership skills. It was great to see them recognising who had skills and knowledge they could use for each activity. They iced the biscuits and ate them as a Friday afternoon treat!

Farleigh - No Dogs Policy

Sports Carousel for Years 5 to 8

Parents who plan to watch Wednesday’s away rugby matches should note that, like us, Farleigh School has a no dogs policy and are therefore unable to have our four-legged friends in their grounds.

The week saw the U11 basketball team crowned IAPS National Champions while the U13 team won the plate competition.

On Wednesday all the boys rugby matches were cancelled due to the weather. The Portsmouth U11 netball tournament and our own U10 tournament also had to be cancelled but a mini U10 tournament and senior and U11 matches were able to take place indoors.

Luckily the weather was much improved for the Year 3 and 4 matches on Thursday when all the Year 3 and 4 boys and the Year 3 girls travelled to Twyford. The U9 girls took part in the Hall Grove U9 netball tournament and returned with second place medals.

Reports on these matches can be found here.

This week’s Sports Matches

Year 1 Visit Milestones Museum

The Sports Carousel will again run after half term for children in Years 5 to 8. On the first three Wednesday afternoons children will be able to choose from a range of exciting and challenging sports.

Kevin Cluett has added in some new activities to try while retaining some of the old favourites. Children will be able to choose one from each of the following groups:

Group 1: Ice Skating, skiing or shooting

Group 2: Fitness room and squash, golf or outward bound

Group 3: Archery, triathlon or karate

This is a great chance for children to try out something different and perhaps find a sport or activity that they would like to continue with.

Next Thursday’s U9 rugby matches against Bishopsgate will be taking place during Bishopsgate’s sports lessons. Parents are very welcome to watch the matches but match teas will not be served to parents.

Rugby v Bishopsgate

Year One had a wonderful day at Milestones museum. Milestones is made up of a network of streets that have been recreated inspired by those found in Victorian and 1930s Hampshire. The children learnt a great deal by playing with and discovering toys from pre 1940s and throughout the subsequent decades. The children enjoyed exploring the old fashioned toy shop and climbing aboard the old tram. At the end of the trip the children were able to visit the traditional sweet shop and choose which sweets they wanted to try .
