Graduation Honors Cum Laude 3.50 - 3.79 Magna Cum Laude 3.80 - 3.89 Summa Cum Laude 3.90 - 4.00 Students graduating with honors wear green honor cords. Honors Program graduates wear gold honor cords.

Academic Dress From the costumes worn in the academic procession one can tell the level of degree (associate' s, bachelor's, master's, doctor's) the wearer has earned, the field oflearning, and the institution that granted the degree. The costume consists of cap, gown, and hood.

The usual cap is a square black mortarboard with a black tassel; the doctor's cap has a gold tassel. The gown is also normally black. Associate's, bachelor's and master's gowns are relatively plain and closed in front; the doctor's gown is cut fuller, is open in front, has velvet panels down the front, and has three velvet bars on the sleeves. The panels and bars are usually black.

The hood, patterned afi:er the medieval monk's hood, goes over the shoulders and hangs down in back. The hoods for the three degrees vary in length from the bachelor's, the shortest, to the doctor's, the longest. The velvet border shows by its color the field oflearning; the most common are: white - arts, letters, humanities (usually seen in honorary doctor's degrees); dark blue - philosophy (the most common in doctor's hoods); purple - law; scarlet - theology; green -medicine; golden yellow - science. l11e same colors may be used in the panels and bars of the gown. The most distinctive part of the costume is the silk lining of the hood which bears the official colors of the institution granting the degree.

The Ceremonial Mace of Cincinnati State Technical and Community College A mace is a symbol of authority that has been used since medieval times when knights carried them in processions with their king or queen.

Over time, the mace has become an emblem of peaceful leadership and integrity. Many colleges , I

and universities include a ceremonial mace as part of commencement and other official events.

A mace is a symbolic reminder that every institution of higher education carries out a long tra­

dition of adding power and knowledge to the lives of those who come to learn. A mace also is a

reminder that the learning process is not always comfortable or easy.

The Cincinnati State Ceremonial Mace was created in 2016 to commemorate the inauguration of

Dr. Monica]. Posey as the College's sixth President.

Each section of the mace represents a portion of the history and the continuing mission of the

College.

2017 Commencement Speaker Monica]. Posey, MBA, EdD Dr. Monica]. Posey became president of Cincinnati State Technical and Community College in June 2016, and has energized the college with a collaborative leadership style and a vision for increasing student success and strengthening engagement with employers and the community.

A native of Philadelphia, Dr. Posey holds a doctor of educational foundations from the University of Cincinnati, a master of business administration from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and a bachelor of science from Cornell University. She also completed coursework at UC toward a Ph.D. in ~antitative Analysis.

Afi:er a steadily rising business career that included eight years with AT&T Company, Dr. Posey moved into higher education in 1991, first at the University of Cincinnati, and a year later at Cincinnati State, where she was named assistant dean in the Engineering Technologies Division. In 1998, she established and became director of the college's Office oflnstitutional Research. In 2003, she became academic vice president and an officer for the college, a position she held, adding the tide of provost in 2015, until being named interim president in September 2015.

Dr. Posey's extensive list of professional activities and recognitions include being named one of the inaugural honorees of the Business Courier's 2016 Women Who Mean Business Awards, a graduate of the Cincinnati U.S.A. Regional Chamber Leadership Cincinnati Class of2010, a Greater Cincinnati YWCA Career Woman of Achievement award, and a Distinguished College Alumni award by the UC College of Education, Criminal Justice and Human Services. She serves on boards of Minorities in Mathematics, Science & Engineering, GRAD Cincinnati, Inc, the Greater Cincinnati Consortium of College & Universities, StrivePartnership Executive Committee and the United Way of Greater Cincinnati.

Dr. Posey and her husband, Rev. Dr. Michael]. Posey, live in Green Township. They have one daughter and three grandchildren.

2017 Honorary Degree Recipient Eileen Berke, MEd Eileen Berke understands what it means to be a "nontraditional student;' something she shares with many students and graduates of Cincinnati State. She has also greatly shared of herself, as a teacher, a mother, a leading businesswoman, and a highly generous spirit who has greatly benefited students, the college and the community.

After 10 years of marriage and three children, Berke returned to school and earned a bachelor of science degree in education from the University of Cincinnati in 1969. For the next 21 years, she ; worked as a special education teacher in the Cincinnati Public Schools, during which she also earned a master's degree in special education at UC.

In 1996, she joined the family business, Cincinnati Sub-Zero, a manufacturer of temperature control equipment, as vice president of administration and human resources. That same year she also became a member of the company's board of directors, and a year later, chairperson of the board, a tide she held until 2016 when Cincinnati Sub-Zero was acquired by Genfirm. She is now Chairperson Emeritus for Cincinnati Sub-Zero.

Among Berke's many philanthropic contributions was the donation to Cincinnati State of a home on Ludlow Avenue that has been transformed into the Eileen Berke Occupational Therapy Center, a "living laboratory" for students that is unique in our region and nationally.

Class of2017 Student Representative­Marc Spahn 'J 7 Like many Cincinnati State students, Marc Spahn's journey to college did not follow a direct route. For Marc, now age 32, it would span an ocean and a decade. But it would bring him new experiences, a new direction, and a lasting love.

Marc's life started regularly enough. Born and raised in Cincinnati, he attended Northwest High School. But he dropped out before getting his diploma. "I struggled with school;' Marc said. "I didn't have the passion for education I have now."

He did, however, earn a GED and pursued music and recording as a singer-songwriter who played guitar in bands and sometimes solo. To pay the bills he also worked in restaurants.

In 2008, during what Marc calls a transition period in his life, he had a chance meeting with an old friend home on a break from working as an English as a Second Language Teacher in Taiwan. ESL teaching had long fascinated Marc, despite his ambivalence about school. So when his friend said "come over, man;' he used what money he had for a plane ticket to Taipei.

Usually a degree is required for ESL teachers, but with demand so great Marc soon got work first as a substitute in Taipei, then as a full-time ESL teacher in nearby Linkou. There he met Alea, an ESL teacher from the Philippines. It was not long before Marc had "fallen in love not only with the country, but also with Alea."

Marc and Alea both knew he would eventually need a college degree for his teaching and his visa, so afi:er a few years the couple made the hard decision to have a long-distance relationship while he returned to Cincinnati to earn a degree.

He enrolled in Cincinnati State's culinary program in Fall 2015, but afi:er the first semester switched to an Associate of Arts major. Marc credits Jennifer Martin, his first English teacher at Cincinnati State who would become his advisor, as critical to his success. "She has just been there for me always, especially at times when I had doubts;' he said.

Martin says Marc stood out because of his insatiable curiosity and strength of character. "Marc is so engaged with the world;' she said. "He never gets complacent about anything, and no matter what was going on in his life, he found a way to make college work."

Afi:er graduation, M~rc plans to continue his college education at Northern Kentucky University, and pursue a bachelor's degree in communication. But this time he will take all classes online. While video chatting kept Marc and Alea connected during their time apart, the couple, who married last August, cannot wait to be together again in Taiwan. 'Tm trying to stay focused;' Marc said, "but at this point I'm ready to go.''

t Marc believes there are turning points in life and Cincinnati State has been one of them. "I don't believe everything is written in the stars;' Marc said, "but my time at Cincinnati State has really worked out."

2017 Award Recipients House/Bruckmann Awards 1he House/ Bruckmann Faculty Excellence Awards were established in 1985 to recognize excellence in instruction and co-op/ clinical coordination at the College. The awards are named for C lifford R. House, the first President of Cincinnati Technical College, and Alice P. Bruckmann, a member of its first Board of Trustees.

The purpose of the awards is to acknowledge educators who have demonstrated outstanding effectiveness in classroom instruction or other faculty responsibilities, service to students, ; professional growth and development, and contributions to the College and community. Two faculty members are chosen to receive the award each year, joining a group of past recipients who serve as role models for excellence among faculty members at Cincinnati State.

1he recipients of the 2017 House/ Bruckmann Awards are Julianna Johns and Abigail Yee.

Julianna (Julee) johns) MS Julee Johns, a professor of biology in the Health and Public Safety division, teaches in what she describes as a "multimodal style." In her case, that means she will sometimes dance, sing or employ some other type of engaging method to help students remember the concepts being taught in her courses.

'Tm not afraid to make a fool of myself,' Johns said. "But I also tell students that although I will provide all the tools they need to succeed, it is their choice and responsibility to use them o~en and properly."

Johns earned a bachelor of arts degree and an accelerated certificate in teaching from the University ofNotre Dame of Maryland in 1998. She added a master of science in biology from the University of Cincinnati in 2007.

Prior to joining Cincinnati State in 2009, her wide-ranging work experience included high school biology teacher, certified behavioral therapist, research health scientist, and nocturnal adventures assistant coordinator at the Cincinnati Zoo.

She is also active outside the classroom, including service as a member of faculty senate, science fair judge, and an arachnologist and biologist at several museums.

"Julee is not only very good at explaining tough, complex subjects, she is also a wonderful advocate for others and is committed to helping students beyond the classroom;' said Dr. Monica Posey, president of Cincinnati State.

Abigail (Abbey) Yee, MS For Abbey Yee, the opportunity to share knowledge with others drew her to teaching.

"For me, it's really rewarding to see someone begin to understand a concept, especially when they have been struggling with it;' said Yee, a professor of Mechanical Engineering Technology in the Center for Innovative Technologies who teaches courses including Engineering Materials, Applied Thermodynamics, and Machine Design.

A native of Cincinnati, Yee earned bachelor and master of science degrees in mechanical engineering at the University of Cincinnati, completing her master's degree in 2009.

She began her career as an engineering contractor for Ethicon Endo-Surgery, but teaching was always in her sights, and when an opening at Cincinnati State came about in 2010, she took the position.

"Abbey represents everything it means to be an exceptional faculty member;' said Robbin Hoopes, provost of Cincinnati State. "That she is an excellent teacher is just the beginning; she has also given of herself throughout the college and in the community."

In addition to teaching, Yee serves as the co-chair of the Academic Policies and Curriculum Committee, and faculty advisor for the Society of Women Engineers. Outside of the college, she has served as the regional tournament director for the FIRST LEGO League and a lead volunteer for the Girl Scout Design It, Build It program.

"When you see that light go on;' Yee said of her students, "you know they are going to do amazing things."

Megan Ketover, AAB '07, CEPC

Nor only can Megan Ketover srand rhe hear, rhe 2007 Summa Cum Laude graduate of Cincinnati Srare's Midwest Culinary Insrirure has become a masrer of rhe kitchen as rhe executive pasrry chef of rhe Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza and irs Orchids ar Palm Court, a AAA Five-Diamonds and Forbes 4-Srar restaurant in rhe hearr of downtown.

As a child, Ketover read every cookbook she could find, and began reaching herself to bake and decorate cakes, landing her firsr job ar a Cincinnati bakery ar age 15.

She decided to make pastry arts her career and enrolled ar MCI. Of her pastry instructor, Chef James Myatt, who retired in 2015, Ketover says: "The greatest lesson Chef Myatt gave me, besides instilling confidence in me, was that he always told me the truth, even about the basil- and lemongrass-infused sorbet served with rice pudding that I still think should have gotten an A."

Prior to joining the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland in 2010 as a pastry chef, Ketover served as a pastry arts chef-instructor at MCI, worked on "The Dish;' a local cooking show, and participated in nationally televised culinary competitions on the Food Network and Bravo. In 2009 she was named the American Culinary Federation's Pastry Chef of the Year-Northeast Region.

Ever the student, Ketover said: "I am constantly striving to move forward and improve, and to continue to learn new things all the time."

Bradley Sherman Bradley is the founder and president of Consider The Poor LLC, a consulting, advocacy, training, and service company that focuses on breaking the cycle of poverty. He also serves as co­pastor with his wife Sadell of New Life Covenant, a multi-ethnic, inter-generational, and multi­class congregation . A U.S. Air Force Veteran, Bradley formerly served as vice president of City Gospel Mission, Cincinnati's oldest homeless shelter. He is a graduate of Leadership Cincinnati and a certified trainer of"Bridges Our of Poverty;' a program that presents strategies and solutions toward the eradication of poverty. He is also a certified speaker with Toastmasters International, a parrner in Social Venture Partners Cincinnati, and co-chair for Mosai:x Cincy Network.
