LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT: DR. WALTER J. ASONEVICHWelcome to the Twenty-Fourth Commencement exercises forPennsylvania highlands Community College.

it is notable that commencement means beginning, and fortoday’s graduates that is the true significance of the day.Today, these men and women have made significantachievements that have positioned them well for thebeginning of the next stage in their careers. Whether we sendthem on to other colleges to pursue bachelor’s, and master’s,and perhaps even doctoral degrees; or send them on tobegin careers in the workforce, providing the region’sbusinesses with new talent to help generate the next stagesin their prosperity, we stop today to celebrate all of the effortand all of the successes that - added together - have broughtthese fine students to this day and this ceremony.

only those of us who have passed through such tests of our abilities can know howmuch these graduates have given to the task - the late nights reading, the research, the struggle to accept new ideas that push up against old mindsets that were onceso comfortable and snugly lodged in their minds. i know how our graduates haveovercome so many challenges to arrive at this moment as i, too, have spent my daysjuggling work and the classroom and studied late into the night, reducing the time forsleep to a few short hours until i had to awaken at five a.m. to rush off to the job thatpaid for classes and the study and the dream of something better sometime in thefuture.

in a sense, we celebrate a beginning today because these are new people. They areno longer the same as the people who entered our classrooms some time ago, askingus for some tools to assist them with life’s journey. We, who have shepherded theirsearch for something more, something better, can only hope that they have done wellby us. Perhaps we on this stage and the faculty in the audience can humbly believethat we have played a part in building the framework for dreams.

Therefore, today, we celebrate. Tomorrow, we send these fine folk forward, a force tobe reckoned with, a force of human capital designed to improve the world aroundthem because they are improved and ready to make a difference - to build a betterlife for themselves, their families, their communities, their state, and their country.

We will wait, expectantly, for their return some five or ten or twenty years from now toreport on their achievements with - we dream - a note of thanks to us for building thefoundation.

until that day, let us celebrate their triumphs to this point and make this day memorable- wishing these graduates well and knowing that greater achievements await them.

sincerely,

Walter J. Asonevich, Ph. d.President

ACADEMIC INFORMATIONACADEMIC REGALIAThe academic attire worn by platform guests and participants comes from a traditionbeginning in medieval Europe. At times when the general type of clothing worn wasthe robe or gown, colors and materials showed individual rank or wealth. As trades, professions, guilds, and universities developed, distinctive variations came about toidentify affiliations.

universities gradually modified the gowns, capes, hoods, and caps into distinctiveforms that would identify levels of academic achievement. in the 1890s, Americancolleges and universities agreed upon a somewhat uniform application of theacademic regalia. Typically, scholars with a Bachelor’s degree wear the unadornedblack robe. Those with a Master’s degree wear a hood lined with the colors of theircollege and trimmed with the color specifying their academic discipline area. Thedoctoral degree robe adds three velvet bars on each sleeve. The doctoral hood ismore ornate.

Faculty and staff members wear the traditional attire of the college or university thatconferred their degree.

THE MACEonce a weapon in medieval combat, the mace evolved over time into a symbol ofrulership and became associated with the pride of a nation and its origins. later themace was adopted by universities as a symbol of the power of the academic questfor truth and wisdom. it is carried at academic processions not only to bring authorityto ceremonial occasions but also to symbolize the unity and aspirations of the College community.

COLLEGE MEDALLIONThe President of a college during academic ceremonies wears the College Medallionas a symbol of the leadership responsibilities vested in that office. The medallion iscircular in form and includes the name of the College enclosing the shield of theCollege. The graceful, unbroken lines of the circle represent the unending process of education.
